iFile 2 For iOS 7 Released In Cydia

There are a number of reasons why people choose to jailbreak their devices. Some like the advanced customization options that are otherwise not available on stock iOS firmware. Some jailbreak their devices for the sole reason of installing pirated applications. Then there are people who go down this road so that they’re able to install apps that Apple doesn’t allow in the App Store. iFile is one such popular app that has been around for a few years now. With the recent release of an iOS 7 untethered jailbreak, Carsten Heinelt, the developer, has now released the iFile 2 for iOS app in Cydia.

iFile is a complete file manager and viewer which runs under user root. Basically the app gives users full access to the files on their jailbroken devices, it works like Finder does on a Mac computer. Not only can users view files through the iFile app, they can also handle customization and advanced management. iFile 2 for iOS 7 has an all new design which brings it in line with the user interface of Apple’s latest and greatest iOS update. There are new buttons, a new icon and an “iOS 7 look and feel.” Those interested in downloading the app through Cydia first need to jailbreak their device. The recent release covers iOS 7.0 to iOS 7.0.4 on all supported Apple mobile devices.

I don’t even have a Sprint account but I was still pretty excited when I saw that the Google Voice integration with the carrier was live. I was thinking that this may mean other carriers would follow down the same path, but it looks like there are some major kinks that would have to be worked out first. I’ll just stick to using Google Voice on my phone without any direct carrier integration.

Developers gain root access on Google Glass, not yet sure what to do with it

Developers gain root access on Google Glass, not yet sure what to do with it

Access to Google’s Glass headsets is still limited to a lucky few, but that’s more than enough to include several curious coders. Some have had success identifying the hardware contained within, but others are focusing on the software. Cydia founder Jay Freeman posted the above image on Twitter this afternoon to show that he had gained root access on his unit, telling Forbes he relied upon a well-known Android 4.0.4 exploit to take control of its OS. The bad news? He hasn’t been able to use it much yet, since the Explorer edition isn’t quite ready for prescription glasses wearers. For now, the question of whether the same technique will work on eventual retail versions remains unanswered, as well as what it’s actually going to be useful for. Steven Troughton-Smith suggests developers can use it to try out more complicated apps than Google currently allows, including always-on heads-up displays or camera apps. Overcoming any remote deactivation Google may try to enforce or loading your own unauthorized apps are also definite possibilities, though we’re sure others will surface soon.

Make Your iPhone Behave Like An iPad with its Own Smart Cover

If you use an Apple Smart Cover – or something similar on your iPad – and wish you could have something like this on your iPhone, look no further because we’ve got you covered. This iPhone Smart Cover hack will work for many people dying to have this.

    automatic unlock smart cover hack

This hack requires you to have a jailbroken iPhone, so if you haven’t got one, it won’t work. Once you’ve got that, you’ll need to get a case, like TwelveSouth’s SurfacePad for iPhone, which is designed to work like an iPad smart cover. The only missing thing is the automatic unlock feature. In order to replicate this, add the Always On Proximity tweak from Cydia, which turns on your phone when something isn’t in the proximity of the screen.

You can use any iPhone cover that works in the same way, but it’s definitely a cool hack if you love the way that your iPad unlocks when you uncover it.

iOS 6 Jailbreak Evasi0n Unlocks Nearly 7 Million Devices Within Four Days

iOS 6 Jailbreak Evasi0n Unlocks Nearly 7 Million Devices Within Four Days

Regardless of Apple’s attempt to “warn” its iOS users the danger of jailbreaking their devices, it looks as though millions of people flocked to evad3rs’ recently released evasi0n jailbreak software, which finally offered an untethered jailbreak for all iOS 6 devices.

According to Cydia’s Jay Freeman, it looks as though close to seven million iOS users installed evasi0n on their devices within four days of the jailbreak software’s release. To be exact, 5.15 million iPhones, 1.35 million iPads and 400,000 iPod touches accessed Freeman’s famous jailbreak app store, Cydia. Those numbers, of course, could just be the tip of the iceberg as it isn’t guaranteed all jailbroken iOS device owners would make a beeline to the Cydia store after the jailbreak process is complete, although there’s a pretty good chance they have. iOS 6 tethered jailbreak updated with official Cydia, quicker installation for your A4-packing device

DNP Cydia now ready to break iOS 6 out of jail on your tethered iPhone 4 or earlier device

The iPhone Dev-Team has just outed a new version of Redsnow that opens up iOS 6 to an official version of the sinful, definitely-not-Apple Cydia store, but you’ll still have to be tethered to use it. The process is now simpler, as the latest version recognizes your already-installed iOS 6 OS and installs only the necessary jailbreak files, and Cydia is now installed automatically as well — rather than needing a complex workaround like the last version. If you’re willing to put up with the tethering and have an A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS or gen-4 iPod touch device, the laundry list of how to do it is at the source below — but there’s always the risk of bricking, so caveat emptor, of course.

Cydia paid $8 million to developers in 2011

While some might have more pure and noble reasons for jailbreaking an iOS device or rooting an Android one, it’s safe to assume that many people do it for the free apps. By jailbreaking/rooting your device, you will have to ability to downloaded pirated apps instead of having to pay for it, and that’s generally the perception people have when you tell them that you jailbroke or rooted your device, even though you might have just done it for customizability and still pay for apps. That being said, Cydia is an app store alternative for jailbroken iOS devices and it has been revealed that during JailbreakCon 2012, Jay “saurik” Freeman, it seems that Cydia developers were paid a pretty impressive sum of $8 million in 2011.

Granted this pales in comparison to Apple’s iTunes App Store, it just goes to show that not all jailbreakers or rooters are pirates! For those unfamiliar, the Cydia store is an app store alternative to the official iTunes App Store. It provides jailbroken iOS users access to apps (free and paid) that might not necessarily meet Apple’s strict guidelines either due to content being inappropriate, or having features that can only be taken advantage of on a jailbroke device.

iPhone 5 jailbroken, but not yet ready for public consumption

iPhone 5 jailbreak complete, owners can now set handsets

You knew that the hackers of the world would be anxious to jailbreak their fresh new iPhone 5’s, and the feat’s been accomplished just a day after older hardware running iOS 6 was similarly set free. Grant Paul posted the picture you see above on Twitter, confirming his new, elongated iPhone is, indeed, running Cydia. Unfortunately, the jailbreak isn’t available to the rest of us just yet, but it shouldn’t be long before the masses gain access, too. Viva la liberté!
