Dead Space 3 Poor Sales Leads To Dead Space 4 Cancellation [Rumor] [UPDATED]

Dead Space 3 Poor Sales Leads To Dead Space 4 Cancellation [Rumor] [UPDATED]

EA’s Dead Space 3 was just released a few weeks ago to the delight of horror-game fans as the new title removed the strange multiplayer modes found in Dead Space 2, replacing it with a co-op mode. As of this writing, the game is currently rated between 75 – 80 on Metacritic, which means it should be considered a good game. Unfortunately, EA is reportedly killing the franchise today.

According to a source familiar with Dead Space 4 speaking to VideoGamer.com, the development for the game was stopped by EA due to poor sales of Dead Space 3. The game was already in pre-production at Visceral Games and Visceral Montreal, the latter was reportedly closed due to a company restructuring.

At this point, this is purely hearsay as no official word has come from EA announcing either the retirement of the Dead Space series or the shuttering of Visceral Montreal. Considering Dead Space 3 teased a sequel in its post-game credits sequence, we’d find it hard to believe the company would go through the trouble of teasing fans in order to cancel its follow-up game weeks after its release.

[Update: EA has responded to today’s rumor with the following statement: “While we have not announced sales for Dead Space 3, we are proud of the game and the franchise remains an important IP to EA.”]

New Dead Space 3 Game Modes Encourage Replay After You Finish the Game

Considering I’m a huge fan of science fiction, first person shooters, and video games, on paper you would expect me to enjoy the Dead Space franchise. In reality, I’ve never been a big fan of the series. There are a lot of people out there who love the franchise though, and its third installment is set to launch very soon. Ahead of launch the developers are offering up a few interesting new details on the game.

Dead Space 3 executive producer Steve Papoutsis has revealed that the game will have four additional difficulty modes that will only unlock after players beat the game one time. Two of these new modes will include Classic and Hardcore. Classic mode removes the new game’s crosshairs and resource management system to make it feel and play more like past games in the series. The Hardcore mode gives players only a single life for the entire campaign. Yikes.

Game+ mode lets you play through the game again with all of your weapons and arsenal that you finished the game with. DS3 will also feature an interesting Pure Survival mode where the players have to craft everything they use from ammo to health and weapons. In this mode there are no resources hidden around the map. That sounds like a cool challenge. Papoutsis also said that after launch the game would get new downloadable content. He wouldn’t give up any details of exactly what be in that DLC, but he said think “disturbing” to get an idea of what may be coming.

Dead Space 3 Dev Team Edition Offers 8″ Marker Statue And Other Goodies For $160

We’re just a few weeks away from the release of Dead Space 3 and aside from preparing ourselves with its co-op goodness, we’re also preparing a dictionary of foul language to yell at the Kinect version of the game to see what some of those mysterious rewards the game’s developers teased a few weeks ago. We know there are those of you who want a closer look at the game through the eyes of its developers, which is why EA is making a special “Dead Space 3 Dev Team Edition” available on February 5.

Dead Space 3 Xbox 360 Demo To Arrive Early

dead space 3 demo Dead Space 3 Xbox 360 Demo To Arrive EarlyThe early bird gets the worm, but then again, who would want to live on a diet of worms? Certainly not us, unless it comes in all the flavors found under the jelly bean umbrella. But I digress, that particular figure of speech would definitely resonate with Origin users who are looking forward to a demo of Dead Space 3 on the Xbox 360 console, where it is said to be handed out a week early compared to the ordinary man on the street.

To put it plainly, there will be a demo for Dead Space 3 which is scheduled to go live this coming January 20, while those who use EA’s Origin service are able to jump aboard the demo fun a week earlier, giving you bragging rights so much so that your mates who are also fans of the Dead Space series would start to loathe you – at least for a week, as you share with them spoilers and what not. All you need to do is log in here with your Origin-ID and password, and you are good to go, gaining access to the Xbox 360 demo on January 15.

Dead Space 3 With Kinect Will Recognize And Reward Cursing Your Lungs Out

Dead Space 3 With Kinect Will Recognize And Reward Cursing Your Lungs Out

Two weeks ago, we heard about EA supporting Xbox 360′s Kinect in Dead Space 3 and immediately became excited at the prospect of being able to yell at our co-op partner nonstop throughout the game. Not only will we be able to yell out orders to our co-op buddy, but it looks as though the game will recognize certain words yelled at certain moments in the game, specifically curse words.

During an interview with CVG, Dead Space 3 producer Steve Papoutsis revealed a number of hidden voice commands can be triggered through swearing the right word at the right time.

“…there are commands where you might be in a certain situation and you might yell a specific expletive and it might behave in a way that you want it to.”

What those commands are, when they need to be yelled to trigger something and their results are, of course, unknown at this time. When Dead Space 3 is released on February 5th, we’ll be sure to curse our lungs out at every moment we can, even while we’re browsing our inventory. You never know what a good F-bomb could bring up in there.

Dead Space 3 Downloadable Demo Available on January 22

We have talked a few times about the coming video game from EA and Visceral Games called Dead Space 3. Last time we mentioned the game it was getting voice command support for Microsoft Kinect users. EA has now announced that the downloadable demo for the shooter be available on the Xbox Life Marketplace and the PlayStation Network on January 22, 2013.

The demo will put players into the shoes of Isaac Clarke and his co-op companion Sergeant John Carver. The demo will see players crash land on the planet Tau Volantis. The planet is covered in ice and teeming with Necromorphs. The game promises the same kind of nail-biting action we’re used to seeing in the franchise with a mix of horror, action and suspense.

Dead Space 3 is set to launch on February 5, 2013 in North America on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Xbox 360 gamers can get access to the demo a week early if they sign-up on the official demo website.

Dead Space 3 will have co-op mode

Dead Space 3We all know that Dead Space has been very well-received due to its spine-tingling fear factor but apparently for the same reason it’s not doing well enough with most of the mainstream gaming audience – at least according to what EA discovered with its research. It seems that people have been asking for a way to play the game with friends because it was too scary and it looks like EA is going to deliver with Dead Space 3. EA claims that Dead Space 3 is “no less scary” and “true to its roots” – so you can expect it to be just as terrifying as the previous two games, but now you have the option of playing it with a friend to share some of the tension.

EA hopes that Dead Space 3 will turn the Dead Space franchise into one of its biggest sellers – by making the upcoming game more accessible to a wider audience, I guess it will help it reach the goal. What do you think of co-op in Dead Space 3? Will it make you more likely to check out the game if you haven’t played the previous two before?
