T-Mobile offering Vibrant for $99, if you’re quick about it (update: one cent at Amazon)

If the Vibrant’s $200 price tag on contract was the only thing keeping you planted on the fence, you might want to head over to T-Mobile’s interwebs right this second seeing how they’re offering a one-day special — $99, online only — which makes it $100 cheaper than AT&T’s Captivate and $150 less than Sprint’s Epic 4G. Any way you slice it, that’s a killer carrier-direct price for a high-end Android phone with a 1GHz core and one of the best phone displays we’ve ever seen… and remember, it includes Avatar, which means you’re getting this for the price of a few Avatar Blu-rays. Yeah, that’s the way to look at it.

Update: Don’t want to drop even a single Benjamin on T-Mobile’s foremost Android? How’s a penny sound? We’re seeing the Vibrant for $0.01 (and two years of your life) right now at Amazon.

[Thanks, Aaron and Kevin L.]

BlackBerry Torch just $99.99 on contract, by way of Amazon’s generous dealings

Amazon’s been known to have some killer deals, and well, here’s another. The new BlackBerry Torch, arguably RIM’s best smartphone to date (for what that’s worth), is just $99.99 on contract. That’s just about half off its usual entry fee with a two-year contract, so if you’re in the market to upgrade your current Bold for something with a little more slide, now’s your chance!

[Thanks, Kramer]

Best Buy to slash prices for old Xbox 360 special edition bundles tomorrow? (Update: yes)

Let’s face it: despite the new Xbox 360 being joyously quieter and more efficient, the previous model still manages to seduce some of us with its sexy curves. Speaking of which — according to Joystiq’s source, Best Buy’s going to kick off August by lowering the prices for the Splinter Cell: Conviction and Final Fantasy XIII previous-gen Xbox 360 bundles. For just $299 — $50 off the current price point (and $100 off the launch price) — you still get a copy of the corresponding game title, a 250GB HDD, and two wireless controllers. So that’s gaming sorted for the summer; now put that $50 towards some cooling aid and you’re good to go.

Update: and the new prices are live. Grab them while they’re hot.

Pre Plus and Pixi Plus free on contract, with free accessories, too

What we really want from HP is a brand new webOS smartphone, but it’d be unfair to say we’d “settle” for a Palm Pre — especially at prices like these. To commemorate the opening of the new HP Wireless store, the company’s offering both Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, on AT&T or Verizon, free of charge for a limited time. Not only that, but these handsets feature free shipping, and the Pre comes with free accessories (including a Bluetooth headset, car charger and leather case) to boot. Meanwhile, Sprint’s still sitting in the corner all alone, expecting folks to slap down cash money (up to $100) for these handsets’ original incarnations. If you’ve been considering these devices already, it seems that now’s the time to choose… but before you sign your life away, why not read our full review?

Amazon Kindle just $149.99 on Woot! (update: sold out)

You read that headline correctly: Amazon’s 3G 6-inch Kindle is selling for just $149.99 on Woot, an eReader that will cost you $199 $189 on Amazon’s own site. It’s a one day deal no doubt helped by the fact that big daddy Bezos just purchased the deal-a-day site on Wednesday. It’s exclusive and it won’t last forever so you’d best get to clicking if you’ve been on the fence.

Update: And it’s sold out. You know what they say about the early bird…

[Thanks, Kristin]

Australia to pay Telstra A$11 billion for entire copper network

The Australian government just found the infrastructure for its A$43 billion national broadband project and eliminated its largest competitor in one fell swoop — pending shareholder and regulator approval, Telstra will receive A$11 billion of that money in exchange for its entire landline network. Telstra will decommission its monopoly of copper cables to make room for the government’s fiber and migrate its customers to the resulting 100Mbps National Broadband Network (NBN) as those light-bearing threads roll out. While Telstra might become a smaller player in the internet and cable business without a land network of its own, it may get even larger in the wireless space — the company says it’s received “written confirmation from the Prime Minister” that it can bid on a chunk of precious LTE spectrum should the deal go through. Press release after the break.

HP partners with video conferencing firm Vidyo, drops hints at mobile applications

The ink’s barely dry on HP’s acquisition of some assets from Phoenix, but that’s not the company’s only recent deal — it also announced a partnership with video conferencing firm Vidyo last week. That wouldn’t necessarily be all that notable in and of itself, but HP seems to be going out of its way to talk up the potential mobile implications of the deal, with HP’s Halo marketing manager Darren Podrabsky offering the following tidbit to PreCentral:
We’ve talked about the desktop. Think mobile. Think about your phone. HP just acquired Palm. Think about how many legs something like this has. Feel free to speculate.

Of course, there isn’t much more than speculation about those possible mobile applications at the moment, with the official press release on the partnership (after the break) only confirming that one of the first uses of Vidyo’s technology will be an “executive desktop solution” running on an HP TouchSmart PC. Still, as the man says, feel free to speculate.

Xbox 360 Arcade reduced to $99** during Walmart Father’s Day sale

We already heard that the legacy Xbox 360 consoles would see a price cut with the introduction of the new Xbox 360 slimster. Now Walmart has sweetened the deal with a tempting Father’s Day bundle. Up through June 20th, purchasing a newly priced $149 Xbox 360 Arcade gets you a $50 Walmart eGift card (usable only on Walmart.com and Samsclub.com) on top of the two free games (Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Viva Piñata), wireless controller, and 256MB of memory already included in Microsoft’s Spring Bundle. So really, a console that cost $199 just a few days ago is now selling for $99. Not bad.

** after using your $50 eGift card on crap you’d buy anyway, like Xbox 360 games and accessories.
