T-Mobile celebrates Father’s Day with one-day ‘every phone is free’ event

We’d heard a rumor this was coming, and T-Mobile has now made it a reality — the carrier will be offering a one-day-only, every phone is free event on June 19th to celebrate Father’s Day. Yes, that really means every phone T-Mobile offers (including the brand new myTouch 3G Slide and Garminfone) and the only “catch” is that you have to either switch to a family plan or add a new line to an existing plan — and, of course, sign a two-year agreement. The deal is only available in T-Mobile stores, however, and the carrier warns that phones will only be available “while supplies last,” so you’ll likely have to deal with a line if you’re looking to get in on the savings.

Motorola and RIM settle patent dispute with a good old cross-licensing deal

We always like to hear of companies burying the hatchet (and the lawyers with it, if at all possible), and our latest source of good vibes are two North American phone makers that have been at each other’s throats over patents since early 2008. Motorola and RIM had a previous intellectual property-sharing deal that expired at the end of ’07 and with the companies unable to come to a suitable extension agreement, it all spiraled out into a big and silly legal discord. That has at long last been settled now, with RIM paying a one-off fee and regular royalties, as well as licensing some of its own patent catalog out to Moto, in exchange for using the Americans’ knowhow in WiFi and other areas. All in all, an inevitable conclusion to an unnecessarily legalized negotiation. Now how about both you guys get back to building us those QWERTY sliders and 2GHz Androids?

Dell Inspiron 14z dips to $399, for now

It may be nearly a year since we first got our hands on Dell’s thin-and-light Inspiron 14z, but the laptop still certainly holds its own in its class, and Dell has now made an offer that’s awfully hard to refuse — it’s lowered the price to just $399. That will of course get you the lowest-end, Pentium Dual-Core SU4100 model, but you can upgrade to a Core 2 Duo for $65 extra, and the rest of the basic specs aren’t too shabby, including 3GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and a DVD burner. Anyone thinking of taking the plunge better act fast, however, as the deal is apparently part of a 48 hour sale, and quite a few of those hours have already ticked away.

Tesla deal with Toyota is ‘not formal,’ $50m investment dependent on IPO

Tesla Motors seemed to have scored quite the coup earlier this month when it landed a deal with Toyota, but it now looks like things might be a tad more complicated than first suggested. According to Tesla, there is no formal deal with Toyota on electric car development, only an “intention to cooperate,” and Toyota’s proposed $50 million investment in the company isn’t a done deal either. It’s apparently dependent on Tesla’s IPO happening before December 31st of this year — if that falls apart or gets pushed back, the deal is off. What is officially happening, however, is Tesla’s $42 million purchase of a closed Toyota plant in San Francisco that will be used to produce the Model S sedan — which itself is apparently still set to go into production in 2012, and run about $49,900.

Sony looks to boost PSP Go sales with ten free games — in the UK, at least

We’re not sure if this is the “relaunch” that we’ve been hearing about, but it looks like PSP Go buyers in the UK will soon have one big new reason to consider the UMD-less handheld — Sony says that it’ll be throwing in a whopping ten free game downloads with each system. That deal will apparently also apply to at least some existing PSP Go customers (those that registered their system after April 1st), and it looks like you’ll get a surprisingly solid lineup of games, including titles like Little Big Planet, Gran Turismo, Wipout Pure, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, and Need for Speed Shift, to name a few. Unfortunately, there’s no indication on when or if the promotion will launch over here, with SCE’s UK sales director Mark Howsen only confirming that it will be rolling out in the UK “next month.”

Philips BDP5010 Blu-ray / Divx player drops below $70 at Target

Believe it: $70 at Target takes home a new Philips (eh hem, Funai) BDP5010 Blu-ray player that once sold for as much as $250. Hell, it’s listed for $139.99 right now on Target’s online storefront. If you do manage to track one down in a real life Target store then you’ll be getting DivX support, a SDHC card reader, BD Live, and HDMI CEC convenience. While a quick search returns a bevy of mixed reviews (image quality is only so-so), really, for $69.98 you really can’t complain if you’re looking to finally make the jump to 1080p physical media.

Wal-Mart buying Vudu streaming movie service? (update: yes!)

Wal-Mart often finds itself on these pages not only for its deals but for the fair amount of comedy its stores provide us, but this next item could be big. According to The New York Times, the company has indeed agreed to purchase Vudu — giving it a leg up on digital distribution and helping to brace against a declining market for DVDs. Details are scarce, but apparently the two companies have been informing Hollywood studios and TV manufacturers about the plan all day — so an official announcement can’t be too far off. Let’s just hope this goes a little better than the Wal-Mart MP3 sales have, eh?

Update: It’s official, and the full press release is after the break. Walmart will be acquiring Vudu, and the deal is expected to close “within the next few weeks.” We are told that Vudu will “continue developing entertainment and information delivery solutions such as Vudu Apps,” but outside of that, few details (including a purchase price) are being made available.

TomTom feels jolly, temporarily drops price of iPhone GPS app

TomTom has done a respectable job of keeping its iPhone GPS app up to date when compared to formidable options from Navigon and the like, but today it’s making its biggest move yet by way of a significant price drop. We’ve heard directly from the company (and confirmed with our own two peepers) that the US and Canada version of the app is now on sale for $69.99, while a US-only version is currently on sale for just $49.99. If you’ll recall, the former was just selling for $99.99 a few days ago, so if you’re planning on making that fateful trip to grandmother’s house again this year, you might want a robotic gal leading the way.
