While there are some very cool controllers coming out for tablet gaming, it’s going to be frustrating to get them to work with any given game. Why? Because the controls for touch gaming are so new, and the ecosystem for mobile games is so fragmented, that the special bluetooth (or 30-pin) controller you spent a mint on could end up being as useless as the frustrating touchscreen d-pad that your finger can never find. The term “Ultrabook” may be just an Intel marketing buzzword, but it’s actually a pretty useful way to describe a specific kind of laptop: portable, with great battery life, and preferably no moving parts. The problem is that Ultrabook is being used to describe all manner of laptops, like (relatively) boxy, cheap machines with spinning hard disks. Diagon Alley’s online storefront—which some call Amazon—is a wonderful place. The Flourish & Blotts section is an excellent way to browse through tomes of all sorts—even muggle books, like J. K. Rowling’s new decidedly adult book, The Casual Vacancy. And it’s real wizardry how you can download books onto your tablet, even if it doesn’t always apparate correctly the first time. And be sure to stop by Ollivanders—they’ve got a new wand out, and I hear it’s pretty great, even if some people are complaining that it’s just the old wand, but a little longer. Whatever it is, if Ollivanders is putting it out, I want it. When shopping online, it’s really easy to get carried away and end up blowing all your sickles and knuts, but if you’re patient, and read Dealzmodo, you can save a lot of money. More »
We, as cameraphone-toting humans, love to take photos. 10% of all photos ever taken have been taken in the past year. Every two seconds we take as many photos as all humanity did in the 1800s, mostly powered by the 2.5 billion camera phones currently in people’s pockets. That’s awesome! But it also means that billions of photos are taken with identical tiny lenses, because most people aren’t attaching a bulky case to add a lens mount. It’s a shame that Tacocopters can’t autonomously deliver carnitas to your door yet. They may be able to someday soon. But what will happen to the hardworking delivery boys that today actually transport the food? I hope for an alternate future, one with drones, but also with delivery boys headquartered behind computers, at Pizza Palace mission control, delivering food through remote-controlled helicopters.
