Must See HDTV (April 15th – 21st)

There aren’t many premieres this week, but Syfy’s new show Defiance is bringing a new approach, and our old favorite Awkward has returned. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Defiance
Syfy’s TV show / game hybrid makes its broadcast debut tonight. The multiplayer game had experienced some server issues after its debut a couple of weeks ago, but those are apparently being addressed via patches. Now we’ll see if the TV show’s narrative can hold up its end, or even get more viewers interested in its unique approach. Taking place in a future St. Louis after years of human vs. alien warfare, a small town sheriff and his adopted alien daughter try to keep all sides at peace. If you’re into second screen apps, the Syfy Sync iPad app is also promising a few new features for the show. Check out a trailer for the TV show after the break.
(April 15th, Syfy, 9PM)

Django Unchained
The latest flick from Quentin Tarantino comes home this week, starring Jamie Foxx and Oscar winner Christoph Waltz. Set in the Antebellum South, this revenge fantasy is as violent and shocking as you may have heard, but should align well with what QT fans have come to expect.

Must See HDTV (April 2nd – 7th)

Baseball is officially back and March Madness is just about to wrap up as we officially move into the “spring” segment of programming, marked by the return of Mad Men on AMC. That’s not all, with one half of Syfy’s videogame / TV show combo making its debut and our favorite show, Justified, airing its finale. Look below for the highlights this week, followed after the break by our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and videogames.

Mad Men
AMC’s main showpiece is ready to return. Now in its sixth season, you should be familiar with Don, Betty and the rest of the crew, but if not you can check out the trailer embedded after the break.
(April 7th, 9PM, AMC)

Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One – Avengers Assembled
Now set in a new case (shown above) the boxed set of the first round of Marvel / Disney films is finally ready for release. If you’re a collector / fan that just has to have it, the price on Amazon has dipped even lower, and it packs an exclusive look at the next set of flicks.
($149 on Amazon)

Defiance
The game end of Syfy’s ambitious MMO shooter / TV show combo launches this week on consoles and PCs. Taking place on Earth as aliens and humans both try to recover after years of war, it’s certainly something new, but we can’t tell yet how well the two halves will come together before the show starts airing in a couple of weeks.
($59 on Amazon)

Defiance Video Game Offers Pre-Order Beta Access

I’ve been exceptionally unhappy with SyFy over the last week or so after hearing that they canceled Alphas. It looks like they’re trying to get back on my good side with a series called Defiance. Along with the new science fiction series also comes a video game from developer Trion World with the same name. The game is a first-person sci-fi shooter and what happens in the game promises to impact the storyline of the series.

The video game went up for pre-order this week with various versions available starting at $59.99 (USD). The standard version pre-order includes an invite to the Beta for the game, a three-day XP boost, and a pre-order weapon along with other goodies. A deluxe digital version will sell for $99.99 and include all of that, plust a 30-day scrip boost, increased inventory space, rocket launcher and shield upgrades, and a bunch of other special goodies.

Console versions include The $99.99 Collector’s Edition of the game, which comes with a fancy box, Hellbug figuring, special weapon, a making of DVD, soundtrack and a bunch of other stuff. The Ultimate Edition of the video game will sell for $149 and will be offered only at GameStop. This version of the game includes everything in the Collector’s Edition, plus a  messenger bag, extra in-game title, a lock box, and a one-year season DLC  pass.

The Defiance TV series is set to premiere on Monday, April 15 at 8pm Central on SyFy. The video game is also set to launch in April and will be available on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

Defiance video game pre-order pricing announced

If you haven’t heard of the video game called Defiance from developer Trion Worlds, you may find this interesting. If you’re a fan of first-person shooters and science fiction, this may end up being one of the most interesting video games of early 2013. The video game Defiance is set to release in April 2013 for the Xbox, PS3, and PC.

Defiance isn’t your typical video game in that it also has a TV series of the same name that will be coming to SyFy. I’m still quite angry with SyFy for canceling Alphas. However, I’m willing to cut SyFy some slack if Defiance turns out to be a cool show.

One of the most interesting tie-ins between the TV show and the video game is that things that happen in the video game can affect the plot of the TV series. If you’re wondering, the TV series premieres Monday, April 15. The official pre-order pricing and bonuses for the video game were announced this week. The standard version of Defiance will sell for $59.99, the Deluxe Digital version will sell for $99, and the Ultimate Edition will be available for $149 as a GameStop exclusive.

You can pre-order the standard version for five dollars and get an invite to the Defiance beta featuring a three-day XP boost and other special additions. The Deluxe Digital version features a 30-day XP boost, a 30-day script boost, more inventory space, and the special heavy weapon called Hydra along with other special items. The Collector’s Edition features a special box, a Hellbug statue, stickers, postcards, a making of DVD, and various other special features. The Ultimate Edition includes all that stuff and a messenger bag, title, and a season pass. All versions include an invite to the beta.

‘Defiance’ blends basic cable sci-fi, MMO shooter action when it launches in spring 2013

'Defiance' blends basic cable scifi TV, MMO FPS action when it launches in the spring

With shows like Battlestar Galactica, all of the Stargates and even Eureka on ice, where will Syfy go when it runs out of places and/or marginal celebrities to tell ghost stories about? One answer may be a show slated to debut next spring called Defiance, which will depict an Earth populated by humans and aliens alike trying to pick up the pieces after years of war between the two have left the planet in pieces. The twist here is that the show will run along concurrently with a massively multiplayer shooter being developed for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 from the makers of RIFT that takes place in the same world. The team behind it has been posting content about the making of both sides of the project recently (check out Massively by Joystiq’s coverage for more info), as well as a trailer for the TV show, which you can check out after the break. We’re not sure if this will go over with any more of a splash than Syfy’s usual Saturday night monster-of-the-week flicks, but at least they’re trying. We’ll be keeping an eye out for this one in April one way or another because really what else would we do, watch Revolution?
