Lenovo delays ThinkPad Helix, eyes a spring release

Lenovo delays ThinkPad Helix, eyes a spring release

If you were biding your time until late February to pick up a ThinkPad Helix, we’ve got some bad news: Lenovo’s revealed on Facebook that the convertible Ultrabook has been pushed back to a March or April release. For a refresher, the Helix packs an 11.6-inch 1080p Gorilla Glass display and carries a $1,499 price tag in its base configuration. Mum’s the word on what’s forced the flexible hardware closer to spring, but we’ve reached out to Lenovo for confirmation and more details.

Fisker Karma production has been halted for a month, A123 Systems’ bankruptcy to blame

Fisker Karma production has been halted for a month, A123 Systems' bankruptcy to blame

Fisker Automotive is certainly no stranger to hold ups, and it turns out they’ve had another: production of the firm’s Karma hybrid has been halted since its sole battery supplier, A123 Systems, filed for bankruptcy in October. Since A123 slowed its battery output after the filing, the automaker has been too short on batteries to continue churning out vehicles. Fisker anticipates resuming production after the ill-fated outfit is auctioned off, but it doesn’t expect to know the outcome of the sale until mid-December. If your Karma’s lithium-ion pack goes kaput in the meantime, there’s still hope. As of now, the company says it has enough batteries in stock for customers who need replacements.

ASUS TAICHI shipments reportedly pushed to at least December

ASUS TAICHI shipments pushed to December

‘Tis the season for last-minute shipping updates, and not all of them justify some merrymaking. ASUS originally planned for its dual-screened TAICHI laptops to ship in November, but a company spokesperson tells PCWorld at the last minute that the Windows 8 showcase won’t ship sooner than December, and could slip further still. The PC builder doesn’t say why we’ll be twiddling our thumbs that much longer. Online retailers certainly aren’t waiting around for an answer — they’ve simply listed the myriad TAICHI variants as unavailable for now. Yes, there’s a definite sense of déja vu when ASUS is yet again delaying a touchscreen device during the holidays. We’re just wondering if the trip down memory lane will lead to the same fine outcome.

Wii U’s Nintendo TVii, Amazon Instant Video, and Hulu Plus pushed to December (update)

When Nintendo’s Wii U launches this weekend, it won’t arrive with most of its primary multimedia features — namely, Nintendo TVii, Amazon Instant Video, or Hulu Plus. All were said to come pre-loaded on the new console, but reviewers found out early that a launch day patch would enable the functionality. As it turns out, that patch will actually arrive at some point in December, bearing Nintendo TVii, with the rest of the apps arriving “in the coming weeks” (no hard date is given for any of the apps). The console is still expected to launch with Miiverse, Nintendo Network, and backwards compatibility with the Nintendo Wii — none of which is currently enabled on the Wii U (presumably still arriving in some form of day-one patch). We’ve reached out to Nintendo to see if those things are still planned for launch.

Update: Netflix reps tell us the app will be available “when Wii U ships,” but won’t be part of Nintendo TVii “until Q1.”

Matrix One gets delayed at customs, manufacturer suspends new orders of $90 tablet

Matrix One gets delayed at customs, manufacturer suspends new orders of $90 tablet

In early August, we reported that the Matrix One $90 tablet was finally available for sale, but it now seems that the celebration was a bit pre-mature. Anyone who might’ve ordered the bargain bin slate must now wait for the company to move through a mess of red tape, as Matrix One has revealed that all of its shipments have been delayed at customs. While the company hasn’t given any specific reason for the holdup, it’s since suspended the ordering process as it waits for the current shipments to clear. For its part, Matrix One states that it’s diligently working toward a resolution and promises to provide further updates as they become available. If you’re concerned about your order, feel free to hit up the company directly. You’ll find everything you need in Matrix One’s full statement after the break.

[Thanks, Michael]

Wikipad sees last-minute delay for new bundle and ‘refinement’

Wikipad Grand Theft Auto III

Were you raring to go and buy a Wikipad instead of trick-or-treating? You might want to search around for some leftover chocolate bars and potato chips. The gaming tablet maker has postponed its shipments the very day they were meant to start after chances to both to improve the bundled content and make a “minor refinement” to the experience. We’re interpreting that last mention as either a pleasant surprise or an unexpected hiccup. Any delay may be comparatively short when Wikipad says it’s already in the last stage of firming up a new schedule, and it’s vowing a gift in return for maintaining a pre-order — still, the clock is ticking if the company wants to score some mobile gamers before the holidays are over. You can check the full statement for yourself after the break.

iTunes refresh delayed till ‘end of November’

We were all a little shocked when Apple failed to deliver a redesigned iTunes at its last keynote. The company promised a major revamp of the service would land in October yet, here we are with one day left in the month, and no iTunes overhaul in sight. Today Tom Neumayr, a spokesperson for the Cupertino firm, confirmed to AllThingsD that the software release had indeed been pushed back by a month. Only a few short days ago CFO Peter Oppenheimer was touting the refresh during the company’s earnings call saying, “We look forward to looking to launching a redesigned iTunes. The new iTunes has a dramatically simpler and cleaner interface.” But he made no mention of a delay. Neumayr says the goal now is to release the update before the end of November stating that development is “taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right.” While the issue primarily cited in Neumayr’s statement is “seamless integration with iCloud” we wouldn’t be shocked if it’s rumored internet radio service also is playing a role in the delay. Read the complete statement below.

“The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right. We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface, and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November.”

Surface pre-order deliveries delayed in the UK and Canada, Microsoft offers coupon for the inconvenience

Surface pre-order deliveries delayed in the UK and Canada, Microsoft offers coupon for the inconvenience

We began hearing grumblings of delayed Surface deliveries in the very early hours of this morning, and it seems it’s not an unlucky few that are suffering, but an unlucky many. There were reports of delays to shipments in the UK and Canada less than a week ago, but Microsoft was quick to dismiss the claims as an error and put minds at rest. Now, it seems, the white flag has been waved and blame acknowledged. Eager to appease disgruntled customers, the company is offering a £50 or $50 Canadian coupon (depending on your accent) to spend in the Windows Store as recompense. While it provides little relief to those who had a shut-in weekend planned, at least you can trick out your new toy when it finally arrives, at Microsoft’s expense. And, if you’ve received neither a Surface nor a coupon, we suggest you reach out for the freebie — if your fingers aren’t hitting tiles, they might as well be hitting keys instead.

Microsoft Surface pre-orders in Canada, UK are not delayed (Update)

Microsoft Surface preorderers in Canada, UK report release dates pushed back to November 2nd

Microsoft’s Surface for Windows RT appears to be flying off the virtual shelves, however it seems some of the customers who’ve pre-ordered will be waiting about a week longer than they thought. We’ve received several tips from readers in Canada and the UK indicating they’ve received emails (as seen above, check after the break for similar reports from Twitter) explaining that their tablets will be shipping on November 2nd, instead of October 26th as originally scheduled when they put their requests in days ago. There’s no reason currently listed for the delay, however we have contacted Microsoft for further comment on the situation. Currently the Surface is listed as completely sold out on the UK and Canada Microsoft Store sites, and in the US all three variants are no longer promised for delivery on release date. It’s been reported that Microsoft is building up to five million of the devices for launch this fall, hopefully they can all find their way to good homes sooner rather than later.

Update: A Microsoft spokesperson has responded, informing us that the emails sent out were incorrect, so “all customers should expect their devices by the original date given.” It will be following up with customers to let them know their shipping date has not changed, and you can read the full statement for yourself after the break.

Isis’ NFC mobile payments delayed past September target

Isis NFC mobile payment video

Isis must have spoken too soon. Just days after the alliance committed to launching its mobile payment system in September, its marketing lead Jaymee Johnson has warned FierceMobileContent that the rollout won’t make the promised summer target. The delay is portrayed as a collection of minor hiccups, although we’re not bracing ourselves for a short wait: Isis plans to update us on the situation in October, and that suggests we won’t be making NFC-based purchases on Isis any sooner. It’s another disappointment for the future-is-now crowd hoping to leave cash behind — not that Apple and Google will object to a rival’s misstep.
