You Can Actually Afford Dell’s Probably Awesome 27-Inch UltraSharp Monitor [Monitors]

Dell is dropping a nice new 27-inch monitor that isn’t too spendy—the UltraSharp U2713HM. It’s Dell’s first to use AH-IPS, or advanced high-performance IPS, a technology that’s supposed to improve on both color and clarity. Though it was only announced on the company’s Japanese site, the screen looks like it will only cost around $637. A pretty fantastic deal! More »

Dell U2713HM AH-IPS monitor breaks cover

Dell has been due for a refresh of its flagship 27-inch UltraSharp monitor, and it looks like an updated model has finally made an appearance on the company’s Japanese website. The U2713HM features the same 2560×1440 resolution as the U2711, but Dell has opted to use the newer AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance IPS) technology. The benefits of AH-IPS include improved color accuracy as well as more efficient light transmission, ultimately leading to a more power efficient display.

In fact, the display is supposedly 37% more efficient than the U2711, drawing 42W under load. All the other benefits of IPS are along for the ride as well, including wide 178 degree viewing angles, and Dell continues to include its various color profiles to get the best out of the monitor. The height adjustable stand allows for small tilts forwards and backwards, and you can swivel the monitor 90 degrees to get as much vertical real estate as possible.

Connections for the monitor include HDMI, DVI-D, DisplayPort, VGA, and four USB 3.0 ports. Contrast ratio is estimated at 1000:1, the response time is 8ms, and brightness is rated at 350cd/m².

Dell say the U2713HM is shipping in Japan starting today, but there’s no word on when it will be making an appearance in other territories. It’s not cheap either, with the monitor commanding a price of ¥49,980 ($639), but at least you’ll be getting one of the only displays in the world with an AH-IPS panel.

UPDATE: Dell has started selling the U2713HM on its Australian website too, although it’s a tad more expensive at AUD $799 (~$843). Head over here to pick one up.

Dell U2713HM high performance IPS panel announced

Dell, once the world’s biggest computer manufacturer, has not just sat back and done nothing in the years past. They have come up with their fair share of servers, desktops, notebooks, Ultrabooks, and even flirted with the smartphone industry for a while. Well, here is a peripheral from Dell that you might want to consider if accurate colors and great looking visuals are your cup of tea. The Dell U2713HM which is actually a backlit LED that sports 27-inches of viewing goodness on an AH-IPS display. It is the first Advanced High Performance IPS panel from Dell, where it would translate to a viewing angle of up to 178 degrees, clearly upping the ante where IPS displays are concerned. (more…)

Dell debuts new 27inch U2713HM monitor, its first AHIPS panel

What’s this? Appearing on its Japanese blog, ahead of any English language announcement, Dell’s new monitor pairs a backlit LED with a 27-inch AH-IPS display. The U2713HM marks the company’s first Advanced High Performance IPS panel, which cranks viewing angles up to 178 degrees and adds Dell’s name to a pretty exclusive list of manufacturers. The screen can output up to 2,560 x 1,440 (WQHD) resolution, with Dell promising a 37 percent reduction in energy consumption compared to the preceding U2711. If you’ve got HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or DVI-D, you’ll likely be well-prepared for the monitor, which also has a four-port USB 3.0 hub embedded. However, that high-quality panel corresponds with a suitably high price tag; on the other side of the Pacific, the U2713HM has been marked up at 50,000 yen and is available starting today.

Update: Dell has now announced pricing for the US. This UltraSharp slab will set you back just shy of 800 bucks. Visit the source to get your order in.

Dell and HP rumored to be releasing a Windows RT tablet this October

Microsoft SurfaceA while back we reported that Dell had confirmed they were working on a Windows 8 tablet, although it was not specified as to which version of Windows 8 they would be working on. According to the rumors, Dell had supposedly taken HP’s spot for a Windows 8 tablet when HP decided to pull out from the running. However thanks to a new set of rumors, word has it that both HP and Dell have joined forces and are looking to push out a Windows RT tablet this October. The RT version of Windows will be running on ARM-based processors and according to the report, HP’s version will be using Texas Instruments’ chips while Dell will be turning to Qualcomm for their chips. This seems to go against previous rumors that suggested that Qualcomm had chosen HP to work with, but since these are merely rumors, we guess taking it with a grain of salt is the best course of action at this point. Either way the release date for both HP and Dell’s Windows RT tablets has been pegged for the 26th of October, so we guess we will have to wait and see if the rumors pan out.

Canalys PC and tablet shipments hit new high in Q2 with Apple in the lead, HP next in line

Wondering how the industry fared in the second quarter of 2012? Shipments in the PC sector, which in Canalys’ book includes tablets, were higher than ever, totaling 108,708,780 units globally. iPad sales put Apple in the lead, with more than 21 million devices shipped (this figure also includes desktops and notebooks) in Q2, compared to just over 13 million during the year-ago quarter, representing a massive 59.6-percent year-over-year growth. HP, which led the way in Q1, has fallen to the second-place spot, with nearly 13.6 million shipments during the quarter ending yesterday, followed by Lenovo with about 13.2 million, Acer with nearly 10.7 million and Dell with roughly 9.7 computers sold. Manufacturers like ASUS and Samsung are represented in the substantial “others” category, which totals about 40.6 million devices. There’s no question that the iPad is behind Apple earning the number-1 slot, and with the upcoming Windows 8 launch, those figures could shift drastically the next time around. Apple tops Q2 computing and MS Surface will sink say analysts

Apple took top spot in worldwide PC shipments in Q2 2012, according to one research firm, making up almost 20-percent alone when tablets are lumped in with desktops and notebooks. Year-on-year growth for the Mac and iPad maker reached almost 60-percent to more than 21m units for the three month period, Canalys calculates, comfortably exceeding HP, Lenovo, Acer and Dell.

HP just squeezed into second place for the quarter, with a dwindling 0.4-percent marketshare lead over Lenovo in third place. HP’s share amounted to 12.5-percent, a fall of 11.3-percent compared to Q2 2011 when it held the top spot in shipments.

Lenovo mustered 12.1-percent and managed to make the biggest growth year-on-year, at 27-percent. Acer and Dell both sit below the 10-percent mark, Dell slipping from third place in Q2 2011 to fifth place this year.

iPad sales particularly helped Apple, pushing the company back to pole position. However, Samsung also did well, its Galaxy Tab shipments estimated to have doubled year-on-year, while ASUS made strong advances thanks to the sub-$400 TF300. That advantage is expected to continue now that the sub-$200 Nexus 7 is on the market.

The prospect for Windows PCs isn’t quite so rosy. Canalys isn’t convinced that Microsoft’s Surface will open any new doors, likely being low on profit potential as well as potentially damaging the company’s relationship with other Windows OEMs. “We expect the Surface pads to have a similar impact on the PC industry as the Zune did in portable music players” analyst Tim Coulling says ominously.

Dell Streak 7 gets unofficial Android 4.1 Jelly Bean ROM

The Dell Streak 7 might be a piece of hardware which has been discontinued despite being launched early last year, making it relatively short lived. It must be said that the Dell Streak 7 is one of the first tablets in the world to feature the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, accompanied by a low resolution 800 x 480 resolution display and Android 2.2 Froyo, which was pretty backward then when Android 3.0 Honeycomb with higher resolution displays on tablets were all the rage. Glad to know that there is a community out there who do not mind developing custom ROMs for Dell Streak 7 despite it being discontinued, and here we are with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean being made available – unofficially speaking, of course, for the Dell Streak 7.

Just what will this update bring to the table? We are talking about a faster user interface, an improved search search experience, a superior keyboard, and Google’s reply to Apple’s voice assistant, Siri. Do bear in mind that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Dell Streak 7 is still currently being worked upon, so its fair share of important hardware functions are not in full swing yet, although Bluetooth connectivity, touch sensitivity, and other features still work like a charm.

Dell confirms they are working on a Windows-based tablet – architecture, specs and release date unknown at this point

We’re sure that Microsoft upset many of its OEM partners when they revealed the Surface tablet. However not all is lost as Microsoft does not plan to monopolize the Windows RT market and according to the Unwired View, other Windows RT tablet manufacturers we can expect to see products from includes ASUS, Toshiba, Samsung and Lenovo. Now reportedly HP was poised to manufacture Windows RT tablets too, but apparently passed on the opportunity, opening up the speculation that Dell could be taking its place. However when asked by Business Insider’s Julie Bort to confirm the speculation, Dell instead replied with a rather vague answer. The computer manufacturer replied that they could only confirm that they are working on a Windows-based tablet for the future, although no specs or possible release dates were given. This seems to be in line with reports earlier this month that Dell would be releasing Windows-based tablets, but at this point in time, the predicted end of the year release is up in the air at the moment.

Ports include two USB 3.0, two USB 2.0 and one eSATA / USB combo, along with VGA, HDMI and DisplayPort 1.2. There’s also power for up to three simultaneous displays when undocked, or five when docked in a Latitude E-family station.

Screen options include a choice of WLED and IPS RBG LED displays, including some with more than 100 percent Adobe color gamut. The M6700 will also be offered with optional 10+ finger multitouch, though that SKU won’t arrive until a few months time. NVIDIA 3D Vision Pro can be specified for the M6700 as well.

The magnesium alloy and aluminum chassis meet MIL-STD 810G standards, and can be paired with an optional slice-battery for extended runtimes.
