It’s been a rocky road, paved with hardship and confusion, but Dell’s finally ready to let us at its colorful collection of Inspiron Mini 10 netbooks — at least the order page. You can (slightly) configure them to your hearts content, but any color outside of black comes with a $30 price premium. We upped a Mini 10 to “Jade Green” and threw in a 1.6GHz Z530 Atom processor (1.33GHz is standard) and ended up at $479, but there’s no expanding beyond the 1GB of RAM or the 160GB HDD, as per the international netbook treaty. The order page is quoting a “preliminary ship date” of April 2nd, up from the March 31st we saw two days ago, so we hope that’s just a rough estimate.

Dell’s new 24-inch G Series LCD, which was previewed during CES this year, has finally gone on sale at the outfit’s website. The G2410 flat-panel is said to be one of the firm’s greenest LCDs, as it proudly sports an EPEAT Gold rating and utilizes halogen-free laminates in circuit boards along with chassis plastics that contains 25 percent post-consumers recycled plastics. Other specs include a 1,920 x 1,080 resolution panel, 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 250 nits of brightness, VGA / DVI connectors and a 5 millisecond response time. It’s all yours for $349, though there’s no apparent discount for hugging a tree prior to pulling the trigger.
[Thanks, Rob]

Intel has finally broken its silence regarding Psion’s attempt to bludgeon the industry into submission with its trademark on the term “Netbook.” Important stuff seeing as how Intel is credited with (re)introducing the term in its modern meaning back in March 08. Granted, it took awhile for the name to catch on (we asked you to name the emerging laptop category in May) but ultimately stuck with the deluge of Atom-based ultra-portables launched at the Computex show in June of 2008. Unsurprisingly, Intel’s position essentially mirrors that of Dell although it was Intel that actually filed its lawsuit first: 1) the public already uses the term in a generic manner, and (2) Psion’s Netbook has been out of production since 2003 with no intent of being reintroduced into the market. Stupid is as stupid does, right Psion?

Well, what do we have here? Dell‘s own website has outed a new Studio XPS 435. Here’s the specs for its supremum configuration: a 3.2GHz Intel Core i7 processor extreme edition on a X58 chipset, up to 24GB DDR3 SDRAM and 4.5 TB with three hard drive bays, ATI Radeon HD4870, Blu-ray disc drive, 15-in-1 card reader, and eight USB 2.0 ports. Of course, getting the max settings is certainly going to cost you a pretty penny, and at this point we’ve got no deets on pricing or availability.
[Thanks, Chris]

Update: We’re not quite sure what’s going at Dell, but the Mini 10 is now up on its website and available to order, two days ahead of schedule. There’s still no configuration or color options, however, and that $449 price has now magically become $474 for what appears to be the exact same system, so you may just want to wait until things shake out once and for all before taking the plunge.

If you’re wishing you were in New Orleans partying on Fat Tuesday, take your mind off of it with these fun deals. Check out Gearlog’s finds for Tuesday, February 24:
1. I guess if you’re Dell, you don’t have to have a 1-day-sale, a 4-hour-sale is enough. Starting today at 2 p.m. CT, Dell is having a 4-hour sale on laptops. Which laptops are on sale? Well, until the sale starts, it’s a mystery to us too. Check out the sale, but make sure you get there in the 4-hour window: The sale ends at 6 p.m. CT.
2. If you’ve been a member of the Best Buy Reward Zone program since at least February 21, then you’re in luck. You can save up to $100 off of an iPhone 3G this week. Here’s the deal: if you’re a regular Reward Zone member, you can save $50 on select iPhone 3G, including the 8GB and 16GB models; if you’re a Premier Silver member (which apparently costs money to be a member), you can save $100 on those models. So, if you happen to fit any of those classifications, than make sure to get over to Best Buy before the sale ends on February 28.
3. LeapFrog is having a sale on gift packs. Save up to 40 percent off of select gift packs, and receive free shipping. Get the Didj Hanna Montana gift pack for $89, down from $152. It includes a pink Didj custom gaming system, pink customization kit, carrying case, and Hanna Montana Learning Game.
4. Finally, all geeks need to eat, right? For today only, Jack in the Box is offering two free tacos if you print this coupon.
We first caught wind of an updated Dell Studio 15 when drivers for a 1555 model with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphics popped up on Dell’s support site, and surprise — Dell Singapore’s gone and posted specs and pricing. The 1555 gets more than just a GPU boost to a 512MB 4570, it’s also scoring a new 15.6-inch WLED 1366 x 768 screen, so you can actually watch some of that high-def media at an appropriate res. The basic config nets you all the new stuff plus a 2.4GHz P8600 Core 2 Duo, 3GB of RAM and a 250GB drive for S$1,599 ($1,044), which is actually a pretty stellar deal — let’s hope this bad boy makes it Stateside, and soon.
[Thanks, Karthik]

The case of the Mini 10 just gets curiouser and curiouser. The company finally acknowledged the red-lidded QVC stepchild on its site just last week, but before that quietly mentioned an interesting bit of information on its official blog: the 1GB of memory figure that seemed like just a start is actually the end, too. The RAM in the first batch (or possibly batches) of Mini 10 models will be non-upgradable, and while we don’t know why a company that built itself on allowing people to customize computers would prevent them from upgrading their netbooks, we are sure this won’t be a popular move. Additionally, the first Mini 10s will all be running XP, though Ubuntu will be coming, as well as an optional 720P display and even a TV tuner. That all sounds fantastic, but after waiting through all this is anyone going to wait longer still for a proper-spec’d machine?
[Thanks, Eric]
