Dell's XPS 1340 and 1640 get official, latter gets reviewed

The new XPS 1340 and 1640 laptops just appeared yesterday, and now (a mere day late) have been given the blessing of officialdom from Dell. Of course, we already knew all there was to know about them when it comes to specs, so rather more interesting is the first review of the bigger of the two, also called the XPS 16. The 2.4GHz machine scored high marks both when it comes to aesthetics and overall performance, but the thing got a little too hot for comfort, costs a good bit more than the competition, and those glossy screens are always controversial. Overall it sounds like a nice machine if you have the dough — and don’t mind a little glare.

Dell’s Studio XPS 1640 gets rough-handled and photographed

Dell’s new Studio XPS laptops came quietly onto the scene this morning, and CNET has been gracious enough to share their hands-on photos of the 16-inch beauty with us. The 1640 (like its 13-inch sibling, the 1340) is the love child of the company’s Studio and XPS lines. If you’re so inclined as to hit the read link there are plenty of delightful pics of the machine with its backlit keyboard, “smart-looking” leather trim and happenin’ 16:9 display.

Dell Mini 9 gets 64GB SSD option for Linux, same ‘ol for Windows

Dell Mini 9 gets 64GB SSD option for Linux, same 'ol for Windows

Looking for a little more room to grow in a netbook yet still can’t get over the fear of spinning platters that’s plagued you for years? So long as your odd phobias don’t also include open source software Dell has your fix with the Mini 9, now available with a $75 64GB SSD option when purchasing a model sporting Ubuntu. Why no big SSD love for XP? Apparently someone at Microsoft has some strange phobias, too.

Dell introduces 15.6-inch Inspiron 15 laptop: starts at $600

So, how’s about some news not originating from Las Vegas? Dell has chosen today to take the wraps off of its cleanly styled Inspiron 15 notebook, and while there’s nothing here to write home about, the price accurately reflects the low-key nature of the machine. Prospective buyers will notice a 15.6-inch widescreen panel, up to 4GB of RAM / 320GB of hard drive space, an optional Blu-ray drive, integrated webcam, Intel’s Core 2 Duo powering the ship and optional Bluetooth / facial recognition software. The rig is expected to be available online later this month starting at $600, though impatient souls can find non-configurable versions right now at Best Buy (USA) and Curry’s (UK).

PC Market Sales Figures Are In! Apple in 3rd Place…

This article was written on July 19, 2007 by CyberNet.

Apple third placeSales figures for the PC Market have been updated and Apple fans have reason to celebrate after Apple has reclaimed their position as the third largest PC seller in the US market. How did the other PC vendors do? Here are the top five:

1. Dell – 28.4%
2. HP – 23.6%
3. Apple – 5.6% (tied with Gateway)
3. Gateway – 5.6% (tied with Apple)
4. Toshiba – 5.3%
5. Acer – 5.2%

While Apple did in fact come in third place, they have a long ways to go before they get to 2nd place with Dell and HP holding such a large chunk of the market. As Reg Hardware pointed out, back in the 80s and 90s, Apple managed to have a market share well above where they currently are. So while their days of commanding a double-digit share of the market are over, their current third-place rating in the U.S. is not too shabby.

Keep in mind that the rankings above are for the US market.  The worldwide results shake things up a bit. Here are the top five Worldwide PC vendors:

1. HP – 19.3%
2. Dell – 16.1%
3. Lenovo – 8.3%
4. Acer – 7.2%
5. Toshiba – 4.1%

Amazing how different the results are Worldwide versus in the US, isn’t it? So while Apple doesn’t even rank in the top five worldwide,  it wouldn’t surprise me if their market share here in the US continued to grow with people curious what Apple computers are all about. Afterall, the Apple brand has gotten a huge chunk of publicity lately with the iPhone.

Intel Atom coming to larger notebooks?

Why does Intel have to be so darn stubborn? First it insists on only bundling the Atom processor with their own graphics (simultaneously breaking poor NVIDIA’s heart), and then there’s whole thing where it restricts the CPU to netbooks under 10.2-inches. But like all good things, this too might someday come to an end. According to Gadget Mix, HP is currently negotiating with the chipmaker with the intent of using the processor in notebooks 13-inches and larger. This isn’t without precedent — the Dell Mini 12 is Atom powered, after all, and there is certainly a market for folks who only need a notebook for web browsing and productivity apps — but we’ll see if people are willing to sacrifice performance without gaining portability.

Dell Adamo rumored to boast DisplayPort, Blu-ray drive

Can you feel it? Dell’s Adamo is just about here, and the anticipation is palpable. We already learned that the unit’s 45-watt power adapter wouldn’t be anything special, but a Google cache shot of accessories and such from Dell’s own website is giving us a presumed look at what could be announced alongside the ultraportable. For starters, we get the impression that it’ll boast DisplayPort (judging by the DisplayPort-to-HDMI / VGA / etc. adapters) and at least have an option for a 2x Blu-ray combo drive. We’re also seeing 250GB / 500GB internal / external SATA drives and an auto / air adapter for powering the machine in your vehicle / personally owned 747. Only the suits in Round Rock know if these will actually come to fruition, but honestly, why bother hosting these up on your website if they weren’t on the way?
