Furniception: These New Products Are Cut From Existing Ikea Furniture

Furniception: These New Products Are Cut From Existing Ikea Furniture

There are lots of factors that come to mind when weighing the environmental and social responsibility of a product, like where it’s made, what it’s made of, and the conditions of those who made it. Designers are starting to pay closer attention to the manufacturing methods, too, to ensure the least possible waste at the end of the process. Rather than address the issue at fabrication HQ with stuff he designed himself, Münster-based Samuel Treindl opted to demonstrate the creative potential inherent in furniture that’s already on the market.

The Planet’s Most Elegant Street Furniture Was Designed 60 Years Ago

One of Britain’s greatest industrial designers, David Mellor is probably best known for his sculptural cutlery, which was the first stainless steel flatware to be mass-produced in the UK. But even those who’ve added his spoons to their wedding registry might not know about the system of street furniture he designed, which became iconic on British sidewalks.

55-inch LG Gallery OLED TV Looks Like a Framed Picture

If you think back to when flatscreen TVs first hit the market one of the things that a lot of people wanted to do was mount them on the wall. The problem with mounting most LCD and plasma TVs on walls is that they’re often too thick and heavy, and most of them just ended up sitting on entertainment centers. Now there are incredibly thin-profile OLED screens coming to market that will definitely be skinny and lightweight enough to hang on the wall like a work of art.

LG has unveiled their new Gallery TV (model 55EA8800) that uses an incredibly thin OLED panel inside of a bezel that looks like a picture frame. The overall effect is of a piece of artwork hanging on the wall inside of a custom frame. That frame does more than just look good, it also hides the television’s speaker system called Canvas Speaker 2.2.

Taking the picture frame effect even further, the TV ships with a gallery mode and preloaded digital images of artworks from famous artists. Buyers can also put their own images and artwork on the TV and have them display in gallery mode as well. Pricing for the TV is unknown at this time, but knowing how much other OLED sets are going for, I’d expect it to be somewhere around $10,000(USD).

Video Game Book Covers Make You Look Much More Literate

I’m sure your bookshelves are chockful of the classics. Mine, on the other hand have nothing but graphic novels, video games Blu-ray discs and DVDs. Oh, and a bunch of collectible toys and robots. I suppose I’m not that well-read these days thanks to the advent of the internet, and numerous other digital distractions. At least I can LOOK like I’m more of a bookworm if I outfit all of my games with these covers.

These custom covers by video game lover JamesBit are perfect for making your game discs look like books. James has come up with a design that’s reminiscent of Penguin Books‘ iconic minimal style, but with an Atari 2600 controller in place of the penguin.

Six bucks will get you a set of three covers, customized to your specific video games and discs. For that price, you’ll only get a PDF that you need to print out yourself, but James does the hard work of making it look good, filling in the design template and prepping the PDF for you. If you have a ton of discs, he’ll cut the price to $1.49 each. Head on over to Etsy to order yours now.

Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari to depart in November

Nokia design chief Marko Ahtisaari to depart in November

Amongst the insanity that is Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia, another important piece of news quietly dropped. Nokia said that its head of design, Marko Ahtisaari, will leave the company in November this year to pursue “entrepreneurial opportunities.” He’ll be replaced by Industrial Design VP Stefan Pannenbecker. Ahtisaari, who we spoke to earlier this year, led the creation of all recent Lumia devices, including the 925 and 1020. Most of those handsets received wide praise for their design, so if Microsoft hopes to jump its smartphone market share by purchasing Nokia’s device division, this won’t help.

Designers Turn an Abandoned Victoria's Secret Into a Temporary Workshop

This spring, when City Council voted to demolish the mall at South Street Seaport, they announced that current tenants would be allowed to stay until the summer’s end. ColorWare Now Pimps Roombas

The Roomba cleans your house, but who will keep the Roomba fresh and clean? ColorWare will. The company known for customizing computers, consoles and media players now customizes iRobot’s popular Roomba 780 robotic vacuum cleaner. They’ll even make it look like dirt if you want.

colorware roomba 780

As always, ColorWare offers a variety of metallic and solid colors to paint the Roomba 780. You can specify different colors for seven of the cleaning robot’s parts. However for some reason, ColorWare won’t touch the robot’s butt; that part will always be black. So don’t make fun of my Oreo-themed Roomba. I did the best I could.

colorware roomba 780 3 300x250
colorware roomba 780 4 300x250

The only thing more fun than customizing the Roomba 780′s colors is hearing about its price. If you already have a Roomba 780, ColorWare will give it a paint job for $249 (USD). Don’t have the robot? ColorWare will gladly hand you a custom painted Roomba 780 for $899.

8 Horrible Data Visualizations That Make No Sense

8 Horrible Data Visualizations That Make No Sense

Data visualization can be a great way to drive numbers home and give them a visual weight mere statistics don’t have. At least, that’s what happens when they make sense. Sometimes visualizations are downright dumb and just make things worse. Like these, for instance.
