3D-Printed Animal Heads: Wireframe Wildlife

While I’m sure some of you out there really enjoy hunting, it’s not really for me. Now don’t get me wrong – I can eat meat, wear leather and shoot guns with the best of them. I just don’t really have the stomach for the hands-on killing part. So while real hunters might like animal head trophies lining their walls, I much prefer these more humane wall trophies.

These 3D-printed animal heads were designed by DotSan, and come in a variety of wild animal forms, including tigers, elephants, deer, rhinos and zebras. Each one is based on an abstract 3D model of the animal’s head, deconstructed down to just its wireframe.

And if you’d rather go with something even cuddlier, you could always opt for one of DotSan’s 3D-printed kitties.

The animals can be had in sizes ranging from under 3-inches-tall for around $15 to $20(USD) all the way up to a massive 20-inch-tall deer for over $1700. The mid-sized versions are the best deal, with prices around $20 to $30 for an 6-inch-tall critters and just under $40 for a 11-inch-tall sculpture. The 4-inch-tall kittehs sell for about $16 each.

iPhone DJ Dock: Two Turntables and a Smartphone

There are seemingly a billion and one iPhone and iPod docks on the market, so how do you make one that stands out from the crowd? Simple. Make one that looks like this.

iphone turntable dock

SKU Style’s custom-made dock for 30-pin iOS devices is designed to look like a DJ rig. The center dock looks like a mixer, while the left and right speakers look just like turntables. It’s really a brilliant design, and would look great sitting on your bookshelf. Each component is made from sculpted resin and covered with white paint.

Check it out over on Etsy, where you can grab it for $400(USD). Just don’t try scratching the turntables by sticking your fingers on the platters. You’re likely to puncture a speaker cone or something.

Elon Musk And Team Figure Out How To Design Rocket Parts Like Tony Stark

Elon Musk And Team Figure Out How To Design Rocket Parts Like Tony Stark

If there’s anything people love more than the Iron Man suit, it has to be the process Tony Stark goes through to actually build that suit. We’ve all watched in awe as various parts for the suit are designed by hand movements. We know its a movie and that there’s a lot of CGI involved, but that doesn’t stop us from wondering if something like that would ever be possible in the future. It may very well be possible. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors, the founder of space transportation company SpaceX, the man behind Hyperloop and more says he and his team have figured out how to design rocket parts by just making hand movements through the air.

Elon revealed this via Twitter, saying that they have the process figured out, and just require a high frame rate holograph generator. Naturally, people on the microblogging network started asking him if he was going to build an Iron Man suit. People are likely to think that, he’s a billionaire with a very firm grasp on modern technology, which makes him kind of like a real-life Tony Stark. Unfortunately, Elon has said that he doesn’t plan on flying around to save the world in a metal suit, but he does say that design by hand-manipulated hologram is quite useful. He says that they’ll post a video next week of designing a rocket part with hand movements through the air and then immediately printing that design in titanium. It’ll definitely be interesting to watch.

Ferrari 458 Speciale: Making the Italia Even More Special(e)

Is it possible to improve the Ferrari 458 Italia? Well, even Ferrari seems to think so, thanks to the plethora of different versions of the car that are available right now. The latest and greatest is the Speciale, which will premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show on September 10th, in Germany.

    ferrari 458 speciale front

When compared with a stock 458, the Ferrari 458 Speciale has an improved aerodynamic efficiency index, making it more slippery at faster speeds. It’s got a more powerful naturally-aspirated 4.5L V8, that develops 596 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. This will make it go pretty fast –  from 0 to 62 mph in just three seconds. It’s also got the highest lateral acceleration (1.33 G) of any Ferrari.

It will launch in a couple of weeks, so all of you speed freaks can start salivating. It’s definitely got awesome performance, but I kind of cringe at discovering the retail price (which hasn’t been announced yet).

Kaist Armadillo-T Foldable Electric Vehicle: Open to Drive

As cities are plagued with more and more traffic congestion, it will become harder to drive as well as park your typical car. The Armadillo-T will help alleviate the problem. The electric-powered vehicle was developed by the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and it has some unusual features.
    armadillot
It was designed to reduce the amount of space used when a car is parked and not in use. This way you can fit more cars in an area or just claim more of your garage for other things. It uses a 13.6 kWh battery and can travel up to 37 miles per hour with about a 60 mile range per charge.

In order to have it fold just right, they ditched the concept traditional rear view mirrors and instead installed surround-view cameras. When closed its size goes down to just 1.65 meters-long. The rear end slides forward, folding up vertically. It can also rotate 360 degrees when folded, so that it can be moved about. Pretty awesome idea.

Simple Optics Make This Clever Mirror Much Easier to Share

If everyone in your home is constantly jockeying for position at the bathroom mirror as they get ready for the day, you might want to consider an upgrade to this clever alternative dubbed the mirror #180 by its creators at halb/halb. What makes it special is a split down the middle with each side angled slightly away from each other, giving two people standing next to each other private views of their own reflections.

Watch Copenhagen’s Inflatable Community Center Blow Up Around Town

In the swinging 1970s, inflatable architecture—along with geodesic domes and conversation pits—was all the rage. But over the past few years we’ve seen a resurgence in pneumatically powered structures, which are actually surprisingly functional as temporary event spaces. The latest? Aeropolis, a big, reflective community center that’s been popping up all over Copenhagen this month.
