Skytran Magnetically Levitating Mass Transit System: The Future is Coming to Tel Aviv

There aren’t that many maglev trains in operation yet (one is currently operating in Shanghai, China and another is in Japan). There have been skytrains and monorails before, but this is the world’s first magnetically levitating system of mass transit, which will be built in Tel Aviv, Israel. Previous maglev trains were for intercity journeys, not urban mass transit.

Skytran was designed to reduce urban traffic congestion. It’s supposed to be less expensive to use, faster, and more comfortable than cars or buses. The two-seater pods allow for personal transit between stations.

Vehicles will be requested through a mobile app and are supposed to arrive almost instantly on demand.

The system was designed by engineers from NASA and Skytran. I wonder how this will scale up when tens of thousands of people try to use it every day. It kind of reminds me of the pods in Minority Report.

Inflatable Boat Dress: Does This Make My Butt Look Big?

So, when your wife puts on this inflatable boat dress, how are you going to answer when she asks if it accentuates her rear end? No, it doesn’t make your aft look big at all – your fore and aft are the same size.

This crazy-looking dress can be a floatation device should you be on a cruise and find yourself in the drink. Jacqueline Bradley’s “Boat Dress” is hard to wear on land, but could save your life under the right circumstances. Think of it as a raft that you can wear.

Of course, you can’t dance in it or navigate a crowded street… You really can’t do anything except survive in the water. Until the sharks come, that is.

Bike Wheel Clock: Time to Stop Pedaling

Clocks come in a bunch of shapes and sizes, but this clock made from a bike wheel is certainly unique. The resulting wall clock is quite big, but definitely something interesting to hang in your pad if you’re a bicyclist.

The Bicycle Wheel Clock is made by Vyconic, and I’m sure that it would work well as a conversation piece in an office or in your living room. If you love bikes, then this is the clock for you. The wheel had a brushed aluminum finish with a bright chrome hub. The wheel is reconditioned and has been modified to make space for the quartz clock movement at its center.

You can get the Bicycle Wheel Clock from Notonthehighstreet for £55 (~$89 USD). It’s available with either red or black hands. Tire and innertube not included.

Lomography Petzval Lens: Retro-Fantastic Goodness for Your Modern DSLR

Photography has come a long way since its beginnings, but there are still some amazing things to be discovered by looking at how things worked back then. Inspired by the early days of photography, this lens has been re-engineered from one that was invented in the 19th century.

The team of Lomography have released their Petzval lens, which is supposed to replicate the lens that was originally invented by Joseph Petzval in Vienna, Austria, in 1840. It will work with Nikon F-mount and Canon EF-mount DSLRs.

The original Petzval lens was used to create beautiful portrait shots, and the new lens keeps the same strong color saturation, depth of field, bokeh elements, etc for which the lens was lauded.

Lomography launched their project as a Kickstarter campaign, and it’s been wildly successful so far. They’ve already amassed over $833,000 versus their goal of $100,000 – so this lens will definitely be made. There are 25 days left of funding, but you’ll have to pledge $400(USD) to get yours.

This Psychedelic Fever Dream Is Made Of Ink, Soap And Oil

You may not interact with ink as much as you used to, but you have to give it credit for powering millions of pens and a crap ton of printing. We still consume a lot of media that exists because of ink. And a good way to celebrate it might be to just let it flow and see what happens. Ruslan Khasanov, a Russian graphic designer, felt the same way so he mixed ink, oil and soap to make this trippy and awesome video called Pacific Light. Khasanov was inspired when he watched black beads of soy sauce form in oil while he was cooking. There are great stills and gifs on his Behance. Kind of makes me long for a tie die comeback. A Shark Sharpener Makes Knives Extra Menacing By Association

Maybe scary things just go together? Why else would this shark and knife look so right? Created by the design studio Propaganda, this sharpener is aptly named "Jaws" and has a no-slip bottom for stability. It may not be super heavy duty, but if you just have a few kitchen knives it’s a good option for giving them a refresh every few months.

Lie-Down Laptop Stand Lets You Work Like an Astronaut in Bed

If you find yourself lying in bed trying to read emails or get some work done, you know it can be tricky to hold your laptop in the right position if you want to lie down. Now, thanks to this gadget, you can use your laptop while lying flat on your back.

It’s unclear how the stand holds onto your laptop when lying upside-down, but the image above suggests that you might need a bungee or rubber band of some sort to hold it in place. There’s definitely a lip that holds the front edge in place.

This Log Pillow Isn’t as Firm as It Looks

I was just thinking about picking up some new pillows for our bed, since I think I need something with a little more support. While a good firm pillow can help you sleep better, I don’t think that sleeping on a log is particularly good for your head and neck. That is, unless it’s this plush log pillow.

The Log Pillow is made by Kikkerland, and it looks like the perfect place to catch a nap while lying on your couch, bed, or in your sleeping bag in the woods. Thankfully, it’s not filled with hardwood, but instead it’s packed with the type of polystyrene beads you’d find in a bean bag.

It measures about 15″ long and 6.5″ in diameter, and sells for $18(USD) over at Fredflare. Or you could just go buy some firewood and try and put your head on that.
