MiG-23 Arcade Cabinet Perfect for Playing Flying Games

I just recently had a custom arcade cabinet built for my basement. And while it’s totally awesome, mine has a classic arcade style to it. Had I known that having one built to look like an old Soviet MiG fighter jet was an option, though, I might have at least considered it.

This MiG-23 inspired arcade cabinet was recently made by Radek Michalowski. He was inspired to build it having lived just a few feet away from the gate of the 28th PLM (fighter air regiment) in Redzikowo, Poland. The cabinet is numbered 846 in tribute to the MiG-23 his friend’s father once flew.

The build is really something special, with a metal and rivet skin reminiscent of old airplanes (or some of the cooler furniture from Restoration Hardware). Radek doesn’t provide any details on the system inside the cabinet, only that it runs MAME – and it’s clear fromt the pictures that it’s got dual arcade sticks and real arcade buttons. Though it might have been even better with a pair of flight sticks.

If you’re interested in the MiG-23 arcade cabinet, head on over to Etsy, where it’s for sale for €2500 (~$3288 USD).

‘Bridge of Life’ Reminds People Life Gets Better to Prevent Suicides

When something particularly bad or painful happens, some people just withdraw and never come out of their cocoons. They can recover slowly or they can get worse and one day decide that they want nothing more than to end it all.

So many of the latter go to the Mapo Bridge in South Korea to do just that. Between the years 2007 and 2012, more than a hundred people jumped from the bridge in attempts to end their lives. They might not have gotten the help they needed previously, but you can at least convince them otherwise at the last minute. That’s what the Seoul City government is trying to do in collaboration with Samsung Life Insurance.

Instead of constructing high fences or a suicide barrier on the bridge, they added interactive handrails that address passersby directly. They’re embedded with motion sensors to detect the presence of anyone near them, so when someone passes by, the handrail lights up with an inspiring quote or message that were written with the help of psychologists and suicide prevention specialists.

A sample message is as follows: “How have you been? Have you eaten? If you need to talk, why don’t you talk to us?” This is then followed by a number for a suicide hotline.

Since launching the project, the Seoul City government claims suicide rates from the Mapo Bridge have dropped 77%. This potential lifesaver is just ingenious, and while it won’t solve the underlying problems of potential jumpers, it could convince them to get the help they need before taking their lives.

Vinylize Turns Old Records into Groovy Glasses

People love to recycle old vinyl records into new things. Vinylize makes hipster eyewear out of old records. So how do they make glasses from old records?

Well, before the records are cut, they are bonded with cellulose acetate to frame them and give them strength. It makes for a really unique look, that’s for sure. Very hipster. Definitely groovy. Here’s a short video that shows Vinylize’s production process:

Vinylize is based in Budapest, Hungary, and they have been making vinyl glasses for over a decade, so they do know what they are doing. The sunglasses can be purchased online from their website, where each pair retails for about €330 (~$440 USD). If you are a hipster looking for something new for your wardrobe, here it is.

World’s Largest Headphones: Sound of the Colossus

When you have the world’s largest headphones, you don’t put them on your head. You sit between the earcups and let the sound assault you. These monstrous headphones were created by Dallyn Rule for the recent Mini Maker Faire in Vancouver, B.C.

They measure almost a full human body length and they are completely functional and made from 100% recycled material. Making this huge pair of headphones has been a dream of Dallyn’s since childhood.

They may be the only headphones designed to never ever touch your ears or head. Yet it still produces music designed for individual listening – like a surround that affects your entire body. And it doesn’t affect those around you very much at all. So it is a very personal way to experience music.

Great work Dallyn, though is it just me, or are you wearing actual headphones in that second image above?

Woodland Sculptures Recreate the Moment Felled Trees Hit the Ground

You could see Philippe Handford’s weird tree sculptures as somber reflections on life and the natural world and blah blah blah trees are alive, man. That’s fair, but really, this art is kind of funny too.
