A Guide to the Fascinating Secret Language of Cattle Branding

A Guide to the Fascinating Secret Language of Cattle Branding

The concept of cattle branding may make some people squeamish, but the ancient practice is one of the main factors keeping the world’s cattle trade from falling into chaos. Of course, cattle rustlers snatching your steers was more of a problem in the mid-1800’s, but there’s still no better way of keeping your stock in check and making sure the vagabond

Pioneer’s New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

Pioneer's New Soundbar Is Beautifully Simple and Wonderfully Cheap

Pioneer’s new SB-PS23W is a soundbar the way most people want it: A simple, relatively inexpensive way to make a television sound louder. In that way, it’s cut from the same cloth as the fantastic AirPlay speakers the company made last year (actually, they’ve got the some LA-based designer). It wasn’t the first AirPlay speaker, but its design made it a winner.

Carbon Fiber Hammock Bathtub: Relax in Black

Nothing beats a nice, warm bath after a grueling day at work. I find it especially relaxing to just soak in the tub with a good book in hand, with soft music playing in the background.

Regular tubs work just fine, but taking the concept of relaxing baths just one step beyond is Splinter Works with their “Vessel” bathtub.

Vessel Bathtub

It’s an elongated, hammock-shaped carbon fiber bathtub that will supposedly provide you with the most relaxing and luxurious bathing experience you’ll ever have in your life.

It’s massive, so your existing bathroom needs to be large and roomy for this thing to fit.

Vessel Bathtub1

At 2.7m long, Vessel is longer than a regular bathtub, leaving plenty of room to share the experience. Custom sizes are available but it is also designed so that it can be trimmed up to 20 cm to allow for flexible installation. Pictured here in black, it also available in red, blue, yellow, pink, bronze and pure silver.

You can find out more information about the Vessel here. Between its looks and materials, I can’t imagine this thing is cheap.

This Ghostly, Abandoned NYC Island Could Become a Special Needs School

This Ghostly, Abandoned NYC Island Could Become a Special Needs School

New York City’s North Brother Island has lived many past lives, as a shipwreck site, a smallpox clinic, a tuberculosis colony, and a drug rehab facility, for starters. The 20-acre island, which sits between the Bronx and Riker’s Island, has been abandoned since the 1970s. But two architecture students are hoping to change that soon, with a proposal to build a school for autistic children on the island.

Heineken’s Interactive Beer Bottle Lights up With Every Sip

Heineken is setting out to create a wave on social media with their newest advertising ploy: interactive beer bottles. “Interactive” might sound a bit misleading, since all they do is light up when the bottle is lifted.

Flashlight Beer

So how does it work? Each bottle has a green plastic base screwed at the bottom. This base has been fitted with a wireless sensor and LED lights. The former detects when the bottle has been lifted, causing the latter to sparkle. The sensor also causes the LED lights to flash in sync with the music, if there happens to be any loud tunes playing where you are.

Jeremy Brook, who’s Heineken’s head of digital and media innovation, foresees that these types of advertising will lead to a “massive area of growth and creativity for brands.” He adds: “It’s not yet totally defined, but it will be.”

The idea for the interactive beer bottle was thought up by digital agency Tribal DDB.

Collapsible Bike Helmet: Hope It Doesn’t Collapse on Your Head

Let’s face it, helmets are huge. They are a hassle to store and transport when not on your head. Want a bike helmet to protect your head, but prefer something that’s not as bulky as traditional helmets? The Collapsible Helmet collapses, accordion style, when not in use for easy storage.

helmet

Designer Michael Rose created this helmet, which is rugged despite the way it looks. When collapsed, this helmet becomes the size of a book so that you can easily put it in a backpack. It uses foldable layers of plastic to make it both safe and small, yet when opened up, it can still absorb shocks.

It was inspired by origami of course, and it’s designed in such a way as to be safe, despite looking fragile.

As long as it doesn’t collapse during an accident, I think we can all love this helmet.
