GoSleep Sleeping Pods are Perfect for Weary Travelers, Just Not Claustrophobic Ones

Airport chairs aren’t made with long-term comfort in mind. That’s probably because they really weren’t made for that purpose. Unfortunately, canceled and delayed flights are becoming a more common occurrence and that usually means a few uncomfortable hours or even a night spent waiting at the airport.

Lucky for you if you end up in a hotel with sleep pods, like the Abu Dhabi Airport.

GoSleep

The oblong GoSleep pods are lined up off to one side so you’ll be in the company of other sleepy, weary travelers. Each one is equipped with a chair that converts into a flat bed and comes with a roller blind that can be pulled down to guarantee some privacy. The pods will eventually offer electronic gadget charging and internet access to occupants as well.

These aren’t the first sleeping compartments that have been installed in transportation hubs, although they definitely are one of the more compact and comfortable looking designs out there.

Use of the GoSleep pods will run you approximately $12 an hour.

3D-Printed Wedges Have an iPhone Case on Their Heels

3D printing is changing how people make and build things these days. From printed guns to gowns, the sky’s the limit when it comes to 3D printing. This, you can clearly see, with the shoes that Alan Nguyen of Freedom of Creation has come up with using 3D printing technology.

3D printed designer shoe

The iPhone Mashup Shoe features an overlapping strap with an intricate heel that has its very own iPhone case. You can slip your smartphone snugly into the case so you can carry it with you wherever you’re headed in the most unconventional way possible. Each shoe comes with its own iPhone case, so you can carry up to two phones at a time.

While they look kind of cool, it’s not a very sensible design, since your phone will probably be worse for wear after a short while. But while the wedges won’t be so gentle on your iPhone, at least they’ll be kind to your feet.

The iPhone Mashup Shoe was exhibited last year at Milan Design Week and Maison et Objet Paris.

Nguyen explained: “They actually work. I heard they’re pretty comfortable but I haven’t tried them myself.”

Google+ gets a new multi-column card design and ability to automatically add hashtags (update: video)

Today at Google I/O 2013, Big G revealed a big redesign for Google+. Starting later today, users will see their content in a multi-column setup fit for any size screen. The home page for G+ now has up to three columns populated with individual cards for posts and pictures, and the social network can intelligently learn the content of those posts and automatically add related hashtags for you. Columns appear or disappear depending upon the size of your screen, and cards can be flipped to reveal editing options, or moved to suit users’ aesthetic tastes. Should you have the requisite screen real estate, pictures and videos expand to the width of multiple columns to further provide a more visually pleasing social experience. In order to eliminate clutter, Google + has adopted a familiar looking left-side menu layout that disappears until a hovering cursor (or presumably a swiping finger) reveals it.

Update: You can see the new layout and auto hashtagging in action in the video after the break.

Giant Office Binder Clip Purse Looks Like It Should Hold a Very Thick Stack of Papers

Clips. They’re used to hold stuff together, from hair to paper and other stuff in between. Binder clips are most common in an office setting, holding stacks of documents in order so they don’t get mixed up when they’re moved from one department to another.

I might be biased, but I look at women the same way. Often, they can serve as the ‘clip’ of a family or a community, even though they might just be acting on the background. Aptly getting that point across is this giant binder clip purse by designer Peter Bristol.

Binder Clip Bag

Unfortunately, regular folks like you and me can’t get one of these bags yet, because they’re currently not being produced commercially. Peter explains that he’s considering the possibility of mass producing the bags, although nothing’s been set in stone yet.

Just to make things clear, the giant binder is only a purse. It doesn’t function as an actual giant binder clip, in case you were already thinking of holding together 1,000 pages of loose paper.

Lamborghini Egoista Concept: Time to Mortgage the Mansion(s)

Continuing its long tradition of creating vehicles that mere mortals can’t even dream of affording, Lamborghini has unveiled the Egoista concept, shown off at a private birthday party to celebrate Lambo’s 50th birthday. The Egoista concept has room for a single wealthy occupant and is powered by a 5.2-liter V10 engine with 600 horsepower. Vroooom!

The styling looks pretty awesome, but on the other hand some are comparing the front end to an N64 controller, even though it is said to be inspired by an Apache helicopter.

Its driver-centric cockpit is made completely of carbon fiber and aluminum, keeping the driver safe and secure – and the vehicle’s weight down. Think of a jet aircraft integrated into a road vehicle.

That’s all you really need to know. You couldn’t afford it anyway. It’s just the stuff of dreams. So daydream about this beautiful beast and then get back to work, so you can spend the next hundred years saving up for it.

Xronos Talking LED Alarm Clock: It’s Arcade Time!

Sure, alarm clocks are a dime a dozen these days – and many people even use their mobile gadgets instead of a traditional alarm. But if you’re looking for a truly geektastic looking alarm clock, you’ll want to check out the Xronos.

xronos clock 1

This custom-built alarm clock has a unique style that would look perfect in a home game room or a geeky bedroom. It’s got a large LED dot-matrix display that can display time in green, red or orange, as well as in several fonts. Adding to its gamer style is the fact that it’s programmed and snoozed using real arcade buttons. The clock offers both 12- and 24-hours modes and can also speak the time or date, as well as provide audio feedback when setting the time. You can even set independent alarms for each day of the week.

xronos clock 2

In addition to offering alarm functionality, the Xronos offers a built in temperature sensor. And since it’s built on the open source Arduino platform, you can customize the programming to your liking. But the customization doesn’t end there. Alarm sounds are stored on a MicroSD card, you can change those if the 10 built-in sounds don’t entice you to get out of bed.

You can check out the Xronos clock in action in the video clip below:

If you like what you see, head on over to Len’s Digital’s Etsy shop, where you can order the Xronos clock for $200(USD).

Detroit’s Robocop Statue is Ready to Be Bronzed: I’d Buy That for $67,436 Dollars!

In 2011, a Kickstarter project raised more than $67,000 to build a Robocop statue for Detroit. Now the statue is finally ready to be cast in bronze and you have a chance to see what a pre-bronze Robocop statue looks like. It looks pretty sweet!

Robocop statue

The design was sculpted by artist Frank Barton. The model as it is now, was done by Across The Board Creations by 3D scanning a smaller version of the design and digitally scaling it up to ten feet-tall. This pre-bronze assembly was put together from foam, wax, and clay and will be the model for the bronze cast.

Gotham has Batman. Metropolis has Superman. Detroit will now have it’s Robocop statue. Your move, punk!

Google Glass Concept Apps: The Eyes Have It

We’ve already seen a handful of concept videos – some legit, some humorous – about the real world use cases of Google Glass. Digital creative agency Playground Inc. illustrates more practical applications of the much hyped augmented reality headset in its own concept video. They also have good news and bad news.

google glass concept apps by playground inc

Like any other computer, the functionality of Google Glass is as dependent on its software as it is on its silly-looking hardware. The video below focuses entirely on apps, from simple ones like a map and a barcode scanner to fancier ones like an emergency service hotline and a guitar tutor.

What you saw are just mockups, but the good news is that according to Playground Inc., each and every single one of those apps could be made today. Put another way: what you just saw wasn’t a vision of the future. It’s a window to a parallel present.

The bad news? Playground Inc. says that there are two things that make it virtually impossible to implement these apps – the Glass’ battery and its API. I’d add a third: try filling a street, a room or even just an elevator with people using Google Glass. See how that works out. Seriously though I highly recommend you read Playground Inc.’s blog for more on the agency’s thoughts on Glass.

University of Texas gaming academy to be led by execs behind Deus Ex, Warcraft

University of Texas gaming academy to be led by game execs behind Deus Ex, Warcraft

Whatever value you see in game development schools, it’s clear that few of them tout gaming industry veterans who can lead by example. The University of Texas’ upcoming Denius-Sams Gaming Academy could solve this discrepancy by tapping two executives whose work many of us know by heart. Both legendary designer Warren Spector and Blizzard COO Paul Sams will guide (and sometimes teach) year-long post-baccalaureate certificate programs at the Academy that focus on creative leadership and game company management — yes, that means instruction from gurus behind the Deus Ex and Warcraft franchises, among other classics. The programs will also emphasize that all-important ability to finish a game, rather than mastering skills in isolation. The first students join the Academy’s ranks in fall 2014, although they’ll need to be exceptional to stand a chance of getting in — just 20 spots will be open in the first year.

This Chair Has Plenty of Balls

You can be a romantic by wanting to lay yourself down on a bed of roses, but I’d rather be comfortable and lie down on a bed of foam balls instead. Not just regular foam balls because they’ll clearly roll all over the place, leaving you to lie on nothing but the hard floor.

Rather, I mean the Feel Seating System Deluxe. While it can be used in the home, it’s also office chair, but it looks far from being a chair – and for the office, at that.

feel seating system red

The entire thing is comprised of 120 fabric-covered balls that are linked together with elastic strands. You’re not limited to just having a chair with the Feel Seating System, since the buckles on the edges let the user reconfigure the shape. Push and move the balls around to come up with a recliner, or flatten it some more to make a cushy bed.

The Feel Seating System Deluxe costs $7,950(USD). It’s steep, I know, but where else can you find an office chair that’s as comfortable, versatile (and productivity eliminating) as this? Fortunately, there are smaller, significantly less expensive versions for kids and smaller adults.
