Ecooking is a Vertical, Modular Kitchen: Everything AND the Kitchen Sink

As apartments and flats get smaller, the demand for compact and modular home furnishings consequently goes up. The latest of the bunch is the Ecooking, a vertical, modular kitchen that packs a number of appliances and storage spaces into a neat, floor-standing structure.

Ecooking1

Designed by Massimo Facchinetti, Ecooking serves as a hub for sustainable cooking. The design emphasizes energy saving and retrieval systems so that energy isn’t wasted when it’s in use. For starters, the entire kitchen is powered by energy produced by solar panels mounted on the system – taking advantage of skylights when possible.

A small vertical garden is installed on one wall of the module, so you can plant herbs and select produce to use in your dishes. Water from the sink is run through a filter, where it is used to run the dishwasher afterwards, saving water in the process.

Other features include a retractable tap that disappears into the sink when you’re not using it; a rotating hood that follows you around the room while you do your thing; and an air treatment system in the hood that purifies ambient air.

Bloomberg: Jony Ive said to be considering ‘more dramatic’ changes to email and calendar amid iOS 7 overhaul

It’s hardly been a secret that Apple’s Jony Ive is exploring some more radical changes to iOS since taking the design reins for software in addition to hardware, but Bloomberg is now reporting some new details that paint a better picture of just what’s going on in the lead-up to iOS 7. As previously reported, that includes what’s sure to be iOS’ biggest visual overhaul to date, with a decidedly more flat and minimalist design replacing Apple’s current skeuomorphic tendencies. What’s more, Bloomberg is also reporting that Ive is exploring “more dramatic changes” to the e-mail and calendar apps, and that he’s “methodically” reviewing all the new designs himself to avoid a repeat of the Maps fiasco.

Also as previously rumoured, Bloomberg reports that Apple is pulling people from the Mac team to work on iOS in order to get it done in time, and that Ive has been encouraging collaboration between the software and hardware teams — which, as Bloomberg notes, have previously been operating in separate silos. That all comes as Apple is apparently pushing things closer to the deadline than usual; while Bloomberg reports that iOS 7 is still on track for a release “as soon as September,” internal testing dates are reportedly being set later than they have in the past, and the sweeping changes Ive has embarked on are said to have put Apple “at risk of falling behind.” Of course, Apple does have one upcoming date that’s now set in stone: WWDC on June 10th, when it has already promised to show off new versions of both iOS and OS X.

Update: All Things D is now offering its own confirmation of much of what Bloomberg is reporting, and quotes one source who describes iOS 7’s new look as “de-glitzed.”

V-Moda Metallo Case Throws in Guitar Pick for Musicians on the Go

Gadget cases come in a variety of different shapes and colors, and there are more and more minimal cases that help users make a fashion statement, as well as protecting their fancy phones. Some may even come with some odd accessories, like guitar picks!

v moda metallo iphone case

The slim profile V-Moda Metallo case will protect your precious iPhone 5 from scratches, and it’s machined from a single block of metal. There’s a back plate that needs to be attached with an Allen wrench that’s included in the package. Apparently, when you tighten the case, it makes a sound like loading a gun, and, it’s supposed to make a sound reminiscent of a sword being unsheathed when you remove your phone. Needless to say, I’m all for fancy sounds.

Oh, and there’s also a guitar pick so that musicians will be able to play guitar whenever they want, though it’s not clear if there’s a way to actually stash the pick inside the case, if it’s used in the assembly of the case, or if it’s just a silly item to throw in the package.

The Metallo case costs $101(USD) and is available through V-Moda’s store. There are four colors to choose from.

HTC One wants to tell its design story too (video)

HTC wants to tell its design story, too

Samsung isn’t the only one with tales to weave about its latest smartphone. HTC’s released a video detailing the manufacturing process behind its metallic beauty, the One. It’s a quick tale, under two minutes long, and was actually part of HTC’s big reveal in London and New York a few months back, although it’s recently been given a re-edit and uploaded. The company keeps the focus on hardware construction and it’s taken diamond cutters, “zero-gap construction”, electro-chemical etching and, well, plenty more engineering to get the job done. Industrial manufacturing and chamfered edge fans should make the leap beyond the break for the full video.

Renault Twizy Sport F1 Electric Concept: The City Car Has Never Been This Fast

From time to time, I wish I had one of those tiny city cars that could park almost anywhere, because it would make living in the city a lot easier. However, most of the time, these tiny cars are a bit boring to drive because of their lackluster performance. Renault sought to change this with their new concept car.

renault twizy ev concept

If you can believe it, the Twizy Sport F1 Electric concept borrows technology used in Formula 1 race cars. This single-seater race car comes with a front splitter, side pods, a rear wing, and a diffuser to give it a sporty look. It uses a Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) to recover lost power, which is similar to the one used by Renault F1 cars. It allows this little car to push out almost 100hp, making it as fast as the Mégane Renault Sport 265 (which has 265 horses!).

The car even comes equipped with an F1-style steering wheel, which would provide access to the vehicle’s various functions.

I’m curious to see if or when they’ll use this technology in a production vehicle. I’m sure that many city dwellers would be interested in driving one.

Wacom outfits the Cintiq 22HD with multi-touch, bumps the price to $2,499

Wacom outfits its Cintiq 22HD pen display with mulitouch

If you’ve been gazing lovingly at Wacom’s 22-inch pen display, the company has tacked on some functionality that may convince you to commit. The outfit has announced the Cintiq 22HD touch: a version of the existing 21.5-inch stylus pal with multi-touch functionality on board. If you’ll recall, a similar treatment was given to the Cintiq 24HD after its initial launch sans swipes. The list of additional specs for the 22HD touch still includes a 1920 x 1080 full HD LCD screen, a gamut of 16.7 million colors, 16 configurable ExpressKeys, adjustable stand and that trusty Cintiq pen. Of course, the new tactile treatment runs the cost up $500 — but if that doesn’t deter you, the unit is slated to hit shelves sometime in May.

HoodiePillow Pillowcase is a Pillow That You Can Wear… Well, Sort of

I once used my hoodie as a pillow when I got to the airport ten minutes too late and missed my flight. That probably didn’t serve as the inspiration for the creation of the HoodiePillow, although I can’t help but recall that particularly bad experience when I saw this kooky pillowcase.

Hoodie Pillow

Novelty aside, I can think of a couple of good uses for the HoodiePillow. For one, you can ‘wear’ it to shield your eyes from the outside world. So if you use eye shades, then you might want to use this as an alternative. Since it has a built-in pocket, you can use it just as you’d use a regular pocket on a regular hoodie, like for holding your phone or music player when you’re using it or listening to music when you’re lying down.

The HoodiePillow pillowcase is available online for $24.95 (USD). Just don’t try to wear it while walking down the street.

Samsung tells the design story behind the Galaxy S 4 (video)

Samsung tells the design tale behind the Galaxy S 4

In case you missed it, Samsung released a new phone over the weekend and now the company’s put together a quick video describing the design notions behind its Galaxy S 4. Expect to hear the word “intuitive” a fair few times, mostly in regard to those new software features and a return of those nature-inspired design licks. Samsung adds that it’s has also cranked up the attention to detail on the hardware design, in search of the “perfect line” for its new flagship, though we’re not exactly sure if it can be both “unlike anything you’ve ever seen before” and “not a radical difference, but more an evolution,” as mentioned in the clip. Take in some sun-kissed vistas and the chilled-out soundtrack right after the break.

New Pinterest Design Update Brings Back Some Old Features

New Pinterest Design Update Brings Back Some Old Features

Last month Pinterest rolled out a new look for all of its users. This new look was first tested by a select group of pinners in January, while it was still under development. The focus was on new discovery features which were aimed at making it easier for pinners to discover things of interest that they didn’t previously know about. However the new look wasn’t appreciated by majority of users, which is why Pinterest has brought back many of the old features it had removed in the March redesign. These features include @ mentions and “via” links.

They’ve also improved notifications, which are Facebook-esque and are located in the upper right corner. Pinterest now also has predictive search functionality. This latest design update is being gradually rolled out for all Pinterest users, however if you’ve not gotten it yet, simply click on the “Get it now” button which sits at the top of the home feed. What do you think of this design update? Were you fairly satisfied with the March update or do you think that the user experience is substantially better after this update?
