NYC Prototype Payphones Offer A Glimpse Into Phone Booth Future

With the rise in the popularity of mobile phones, the lowly payphone has been completely pushed aside as being only useful for homeless patrons to privately relieve themselves. Stumbling onto a payphone will probably result in an empty housing where an actual payphone once sat, but New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is looking to change that as he’s looking to upgrade the city’s 11,000 payphones.

Bloomberg issued a challenge a few months ago with the Reinvent Payphones Initiative to crowdsource ways to upgrade New York City’s payphones. The results of the challenge have produced five final prototypes that range from a complete reinvention of the traditional phone booth, to a kiosk that can record changes in the environment.

Unfortunately, the prototypes that are being shown won’t replace any of New York City’s payphones, but instead be used in order to inspire what the final decision becomes. Considering any of these five final prototypes would drastically change how people would use payphones in New York City, we can’t fully understand the reasoning behind asking for prototypes, to only turn them down to build their own payphones that are inspired by said prototypes.

This Chair Will Self-Destruct After Eight Uses

Have you ever sat on a chair that seemingly looked sturdy, but eventually gave way under your butt? I have, and let me tell you, while it sounds funny, it’s extremely painful (and embarrassing!) Unfortunately, we only have the chair to blame… or don’t we?

drm self destruct chair

I would say that would be true in most cases, except for the DRM chair. It doesn’t look particularly special – in fact, it looks pretty plain and poorly made, even. But what makes it different is the fact that it self-destructs after eight ‘sits’ or eight uses, whatever you want to call it. It’s fitted with a small sensor that keeps track of how many times it has been sat on. When the counter hits zero, the chair’s structural joints melt down and it essentially falls apart. Watch it in action in the video below:

The chair was made by a group of ECAL students for the worldwide art and engineering competition The Deconstruction.

BAT Levitating Mouse: Impractical, Probably Impossible, But Awesome All the Same

While Leap Motion and Google Glass are real products, the BAT Levitating Mouse is unfortunately just a concept. That doesn’t mean it can’t be real in the future, but unlike the previous concepts mentioned which have a range of uses, what would people get from having a levitating mouse aside from the coolness factor?

BAT Levitating Mouse

Could it perhaps offer better usability that will reduced the likelihood of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome? I’m skeptical, but that’s basically the premise that KIBARDINDESIGN Studio worked with when they came up with this concept.

BAT Levitating Mouse1

As you can see, the BAT levitating mouse is made up of two parts: the base (which is basically its fancy mouse pad), and the actual mouse which is fitted with a magnetic ring.

As is often the case with prototypes and concept designs, there’s no word on an actual production run of the BAT mouse. However, its designer does have a history of actually bringing his design concepts to market, like the cool White & White Clock, so there may be hope for floating mice in our futures.

Tokyoflash Kisai X Watch: It’s Time to Decode the Time

A lot of Japanese watches aren’t that easy to read, but this one makes things look eve more undecipherable since it’s inspired by cryptography. The watch certainly looks distinctive, but will it be legible enough to be useful in daily life?

Based on Firdaus’ CODEX concept watch, the Tokyoflash Kisai X uses segmented triangular shapes and lines to display the time. The hours are shown on the left side of the display, while the minutes are shown on the right. You’ll have to get used to the way that the numbers are displayed, but once you understand the trick, I’m sure that it will get easier.

The watch has a lightweight solid stainless steel body and band, and its face features a pyramid design which gives it a small amount of depth and dimension. It’s USB rechargeable and one charge should last you a month.

The Tokyoflash Kisai X is available in black or polished stainless steel, with either a blue, green, or red LED display. The watch will cost you $99 until March 7th at 4PM Japan time, after which it will jump to its regular retail price.

The Ferrari LaFerrari was unveiled at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show and while its name is a bit odd, it is packed with technology to beat any car on the road. It features a 949 hp hybrid powertrain, which is supposed to produce breakneck acceleration. The power comes from a 789-hp 6.3-liter V12 engine mated with a 161-hp electric motor. This bad boy will rev up to 9,250 RPM and produce 664 lb-ft of torque, reaching a top speed of 217 miles per hour.
