Band-Aid Printer Could Make Custom Bandages for Just the Right Fit

A while back we saw some innovative bandages which could be adjusted to fit a variety of wounds and skin colors. While these were great for carrying around in your bag, they might not fit each and every injury with precision. That’s where the Band-Aid Printer comes in.

This conceptual gadget is designed for use in hospitals and first aid rooms, and would automatically print custom bandages based on the specific needs of the patient. It’s designers Han Like, Liu Peng, Ren Mingjun, Wei Chenjie, Yang Xiao and Liu Peng of EVENdesign say that it would be a “quasi-3D printer”, but to me it looks more like some sort of custom vinyl cutter.

Another innovation of the Band-Aid printer would be the ability to alter the pigment of the bandages to blend in with the skin tone of the patient. The concept model shown here would print small bandages, but there’s no reason the concept couldn’t be applied to a larger format printer as well.

Like many cool inventions, the Band-Aid printer is still just an idea at this point, but it was a recent recipient of the reddot design award, which should give it some publicity in front of potential manufacturers and licensees.

Evonik Electric Kite Car Travels Across Australia on Just $15

Whether you like it or not, electric cars are part of our future, and I hope that my next one will be able to function without the need of any gas. Distance races are quite important, because they allow teams to showcase and iron out the faults in rapidly-developing electric vehicle technologies.

The tiny two-seat Evonik Wind Explorer electric car has traveled across Australia, which covers about 3,100 miles from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Coast. Incredibly, the trip used less than $15 in electricity. The EV was run by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, which are capable of being juiced up by a mobile wind turbine, producing enough energy to travel 174 to 224 miles a day.

The Evonik car was constructed out of lightweight carbon fiber, and has a kite that gives it an added boost in the wind – but wouldn’t be very practical in the city.

I wonder when I’ll be able to use this kind of vehicle to travel around daily.

Thermo-Sensitive Business Cards Help You Make a Warm Impression

Business cards aren’t just useful for handing people your contact information. If you’re smart about it, then you can actually use them to help make and cement a good first impression unto others.

Take these business cards by design studio Under Consideration, for example.

Thermo Sensitive Business CardsThey’re far from the typical business card in the sense that each card changes upon contact with your fingertips, lips, or whatever is warm enough to leave a permanent imprint. To make the cards, Under Consideration coated Fedrigoni/Ispira purezza paper cards with thermosensitive ink.

The cards were commissioned by Natalie Daniels, and they weren’t cheap to print. While it might seem that paying $985 for a thousand cards is a bit too much, it looks like it’s paying off since she’s getting tons of exposure because of her extremely unique cards.

Not Even a Samurai’s Wraith Can Fell This Beautiful Wooden Chair

Believe it or not this simple wooden seat isn’t a rare Japanese antique from a pre-industrial time when samurai roamed the country causing mischief with their legendary swords. Nope, it’s a modern piece by Seo Young Moon designed to look like it’s been chopped down at the knees, only to remain standing as its defiant last act. More »

Cirrus Sofa Lets You Take a Walk (and Even Sleep) Among the Clouds

After seeing Aladdin whisk Jasmine off to the clouds and around the world on his magic carpet, I’ve always wondered what it would feel like to hold puffs of clouds in my hands. Not that you’d be able to really hold onto them, since they’re essentially just water vapor with particulate matter and dust, but anyway…

Designer Lubo Majer took things a little further with Cirrus, a cloud-themed set of furniture that lets you lay down not on a bed of roses, but on a bed of clouds.

CirrusIt might not look like it, but a lot of effort went into making sure the clouds stayed puffy and, well, cartoonishly cloud-like. The lounges are actually stuffed with flexible polyurethane foam and propped up with a rigid OSB frame and spring system to keep them looking like clouds. And in case you were wondering, that doesn’t sacrifice any comfort at all.

Google Maps Icons IRL Are Really Birdhouses

If you live in the area where Taiwanese artist Shu-Chun Hsiao set up his latest project, then you might be wondering why various locations have real and physical Google’s Maps icons plastered prominently on their walls or doors.

Wait a while, smell the flowers, and watch the birds, and you’ll have your answer.

Google BirdhouseThese Google Maps icons aren’t just pieces of pop art based on the search giant’s popular maps application. They’re actually birdhouses that I’m sure birds of the right size will find a pleasure to live in.

Hsiao explains: “The project is aiming to put numbers of birdhouses all over the city for bird to accommodate. The iconic symbol will become a navigating landmark for the flying birds. Birds, have the most real experience of Google map. Birds can fly through the city, through streets. A birdhouse becomes their destination as Google Map(s) does.”

I’d like to have one for my house, please and thank you very much.

What do you think about Hsiao’s project?

Twelve South Surface Pad iPhone Case: Sticks to Your Phone, No Joke!

iPhone cases are necessary in order to ensure that your precious iPhone doesn’t all scratched up. I’ve had a couple of friends who weren’t using any cases end up with a completely scratched up iPhone. While Twelve South’s earlier BookBook case had an interesting look to it – it was a bit thick for practical use. This new iPhone case from Twelve South is called the Surface Pad, and it’s much thinner than the BookBook case.

It’s made from Napa leather, and it’s lightweight and just 1.7mm thick, meaning that it will easily fit into most pockets without bulking up your phone.

The Surface Pad is supposed to stick to your iPhone thanks to a removable  reusable adhesive substance, and it’s supposed to wrap around your iPhone, protecting both the front and the back.

The case can also be used as a stand in landscape mode, which is also a handy feature. The SurfacePad sells for $34.99(USD) from Twelve South, and is available now.
