Mine Kafon: Seek & Destroy Landmines

Landmines are a terrible remnant of war, and there are literally millions still left around the world that injure and kill people on a regular basis. This unusual looking contraption is a cheap way to get rid of a lot of landmines, which could allow local populations to get rid of many of them easily without risking more lives.

Mine Kafon was designed by Afghan product designer Massoud Hassani, who grew up in war-torn Kabul. As a child, with his brother, he developed some wind-powered toys that raced across the relatively flat terrain of the desert. He used this as an inspiration to develop Mine Kafon. The device is basically a sphere with long bamboo plungers with plastic caps at their ends. As the wind rolls it along, it exerts enough pressure to detonate landmines.

It usually costs $1,200 to get rid of one mine. The Mine Kafon can take out 2-3 on each pass, at a cost of just about $50 (USD). Embedded GPS chips will transmit cleared location, creating maps of safe zones.

The campaign to produce Mine Kafon was launched as a Kickstarter project. It has amassed about 65% of its goal of £100,000 (~$163,500 USD) with 18 days of funding left, and you can pledge as little as £1 (~$1.64 USD) to help support the project to eliminate landmines in developing nations.

Record Made from Ice Plays (Until it Melts)

I’ve actually been in a couple of ice hotels, and I know that the frozen stuff is a very interesting material, but I’ve never heard anyone using ice to make a record. This froze 7-inch promotional record was released by indie band Shout Out Louds.

This single is Shout Out Louds’ latest and the first off their new upcoming full-length album. The ice record was created in collaboration with ad agency TBWA Stockholm, and required a lot of experimentation to get it right.

The limited-edition package (just 10 were made) includes a specialized silicone ice mold that allows for quick removal out of the freezer and will allow you to listen to the tunes for a lot longer, and includes a bottle of distilled water to avoid bubbles in the tracks.

The record can be played on a regular turntable, and the audio quality will rapidly diminish as the ice starts to melt – especially from the friction of the needle on the surface.

Ballo Portable Speaker: Looks Like Mr. Microphone Lost His Head

These days, having a small, handy speaker to carry with you is pretty convenient – especially when you want to share your music or watch a video with your friends, without having to rely on the paltry integrated speakers on your tablet or smartphone. These portable speakers come in all shapes and sizes, but this is definitely one of the more unusual designs I’ve seen.

The orb-shaped BALLO speaker was designed by the Swiss firm Bernhard Burkard for Hong Kong-based OYO – Objects You Obsess. It has a built-in rechargeable battery and works with most devices that can play audio thanks to its 3.5mm jack. The design is pretty minimal, and it has a colorful belt that joins the two hemispheres of the spherical speaker. The shape and perforated surface reminds me of the tip of an old-school microphone.

BALLO is available in ten different colors, and it costs about $30(USD). It can be ordered directly from OYO.

Table Lamp with Charging Station or Power Strip with Bulb?

There are two ways to solve the problems posed by the short cables in gadget chargers – we can either get longer cables or get more accessible outlets. Etsy artist Jordan Waters makes the latter: a table lamp that’s equipped with USB ports as well as an AC outlet. I’d call it high-tech, but then it uses a conventional bulb as a light source.

You can order the lamp from Waters’ Boss Lamps Etsy shop. It comes in a variety of designs and has two versions: the single charging station pictured above sells for $95 (USD), while the dual charging station – which has a total of 4 USB ports and two outlets – sells for $125.
