You’re probably having people over at some point in the next month, so you better make sure your house is looking in tip-top shape for guests. Since you can’t entertain without the right equipment, you should take a gander at Magisso’s new stainless steel serving set. More »
At the end of the week, sometimes all you need is a still drink, a decent meal, and a long nap. But before you go down that road, take a second to feed your aesthetic sensibilities, and check out the most beautiful things we found this week—from a gummy bear chandelier to the architecture of Oscar Niemeyer. I love cool art and design, but artists can be a weird bunch. Take for instance this fruit bowl which was on display in the Design Space Tel Aviv booth at this week’s Art Basel show in Miami.
What you’re looking at is a 3D-printed fruit bowl that automatically opens itself when a user approaches it, and closes itself when they walk away. When it’s in motion, it looks pretty cool – like something out of a science fiction flick – but the design seems completely impractical too. Not only would I be worried that my fruit would fall out of it, but it also costs a whopping $11,500 (USD). I think I could buy out all of the fresh produce at my local grocery store for less than that.
The Robotic Fruit Bowl was created by Noam Dover and Amit Drori, and at that price they will probably will continue to own it.

Here Is the Official Color of 2013
Posted in: Today's Chili Pantone, the hoity toity decision council for everything we’re allowed to see, has announced the color of the year for 2013: green. Or well fine, emerald. It’s unclear what scientific process Pantone goes through to determine what the COTY is (other than complete arbitrariness) but hey, emerald’s a nice color. More »
Unless you are living in an actual Transformer, chances are the abode where you find shelter and respite from after each grueling day at the office would be largely static, other than the times when you have saved enough to perform a renovation of the entire place. For folks who live in countries with seasonal temperature changes, the way your home stands up to the weather will definitely play a role in the kind of comfort level you experience throughout the year. The Dynamic D*Haus is one interesting concept that will change its shape to accommodate different kinds of weather conditions, as well as time changes, sunrise, and sunsets just to mention a few.
UK designers David Ben Grünberg and Daniel Woolfson are the brains behind the Dynamic D*Haus, which is capable of changing into 8 different shapes. Inspired by Henry Dudeney’s mathematical formula, known as the Haberdasher’s Puzzle, it will divide an equilateral triangle into a quartet of parts, which will then be reconfigured to form a square. The Dynamic D*Haus’ main purpose was to make it more pleasant to live under the harsh weather conditions in Lapland, but this design is universal, so it does not really matter where you reside in.

Fortunately, this gummy bear lamp is not actually made of real gummy bears, but 3,000 cast acrylic GummiBears. Not because of security concerns—imagine all those poor bears melting and causing a disaster—but because I would eat the whole thing. More »
When you first look at this geometric blob of furniture, you might think “Holy crap that’s ugly,” or, “Oh man, I want to punch that thing.” But give it a minute. It’s pretty cool, really. More »
Are you the kind of person that likes to share your tunes with people, no matter if they like them or hate them? Check out the Sneaker Speaker, which will allow you blast your beats wherever the go, without missing a step.
The Sneaker Speaker concept was created by Ray Kingston, and just like its name says, it’s a speaker that you wear on your sneaker. They are battery-powered as well as Bluetooth-enabled, so that you can rock out to tunes directly from your smartphone. The speakers are held in place by one or two straps, and can be moved around for optimal placement. When they aren’t being worn, the speakers can be charged up and powered by AC power – unless you have a really long extension cord, of course.
From the press release, it looks like these are a concept, at least for now. I’ll be curious to see if these get made.
