Nebula 12 Indoor Weather Station Makes Clouds: No Need to Look Out the Window

Here in the Philippines, we have no real need for a weather app. It’s this simple: the weather here is great. If you’re a plant. I’m not a plant, so I just accept that the weather sucks. That in the middle of a sweltering hot day it’s perfectly normal if it suddenly rains for 6 seconds. But I’d totally buy a weather-telling indoor cloud anyhow.

That’s the Nebula 12, a concept for a lamp that doubles as a weather station. It’s being developed by the Micasa Lab, the same crazy folks who came up with the iRock chair. Like today’s weather apps, the Nebula 12 is designed to provide a visual representation of the forecast, but in a more tangible way.

The device connects to an online source for weather reports. If it’s sunny, the lamp will shine a bright yellow light, but as you can see the fun starts when it’s cloudy. The device will use a controlled combination of liquid nitrogen and hot water to create an indoor cloud. The light can then change the color and brightness of the cloud. Fortunately it won’t create rain or lightning even if that’s the forecast. Below is a short video demonstrating the prototype:

If the device ever gets released, I hope Micasa Lab gives it an “always cloudy” mode. Because that’s the only reason why it will sell.

This Radio Won’t Shut Up Until You Shove a Cork In It

You use buttons to turn things off and on all the time, and it gets boring. Surely there are cleverer ways to go about such a toggle. That’s what the designers at Skrekkøgle thought when they came up with this neat little radio that shuts up when you cram a cork in it. More »

LED Astronaut Helmet: It’s Spaaaace Magic!

While most of us will never get the chance to travel to far-off planets in a spaceship, that doesn’t mean we can’t fantasize about space travel right here on planet Earth. If you’ve always wanted to be an astronaut, then you might want to order your very own space helmet.

This lightweight acrylic space helmet looks extra fine thanks to the bright LED lighting inside of it. These light strips can even change colors, thanks to the included remote control. While it might not keep you breathing in the vacuum of space, it is perfect for a night out on the town (assuming you go to raves or costume parties regularly.)

Adding to the effect are light-reactive fluorescent visor pivots, which glow even brighter when the LEDs are illuminated. You can expect at least 8 hours of light on a single charge of the included battery pack, so your mission flight can last all through the night.

Artist Jenn Mann made the first of these helmets for a David Bowie-themed party, but is now making them custom for those who want to join her on her journey through space.

The LED space helmet sells for $182(USD), which I think is a steal for something that looks this awesome.

StickNFind Bluetooth Stickers: Never Lose Your Phone or Keys Again

I usually don’t misplace things, but from time to time, everyone misplaces their keys, phone or wallet. Instead of raging like an animal, tearing apart your place, why not simply stick on an Bluetooth sticker that will allow you to easily find them again.

sticknfind bluetooth stickers

StickNFind combines small Bluetooth-enabled stickers with an accompanying app that will help you locate your missing objects, keys, wallet, or anything else. The stickers are the size of a quarter, and they aren’t too bulky, so it’s not too complicated to find a place to stick them on. The app can also be set to alert you when your objects are out of proximity, which will allow you to never leave your house without your keys or wallet. This feature also makes it great for keeping tabs on kids – though it does have a range limit of 100 feet.

The StickNFind app can pinging users when they are near the object, but can’t pinpoint the exact location of them, so you’ll still have to search a little bit for them. Still, it’ll quickly get you in the vicinity of your lost items, and you can cause the stickers to beep or light up remotely making them much easier to find.

Each sticker has a replaceable battery, though you can expect each of them to last for a year, with an average use of 30 minutes a day. StickNFind was launched  an Indiegogo crowdfunding project. You’ll have to pledge $35(USD) to get 2 stickers. $65 gets you 4 stickers, $90 gets you 6 stickers, and $150 buys you 10 stickers. So far, they’ve amassed about  $10,000 of a projected goal of $70,000, with 45 days of funding left.

Clip Mouse Concept: Now Why Didn’t I Think of This?

If you’re like me, you loathe the idea of using a trackpad on your laptop. I grew up using mice, and I’m about 1000 times more efficient using a mouse than a trackpad. So whenever I hit the road, I carry a mouse everywhere I go. But one problem with the mouse is where to put it when you carry around your computer. That’s why I love the idea behind the Clip Mouse.

The concept for the Clip Mouse was designed by Frank Guo for a design competition being put on by Lite-On, and it’s really a cool idea. Basically, the mouse would be made of a curved material that could be easily clipped onto the edge of an ultrabook or other thin laptop, so you can carry both the computer and the mouse with one hand.

Guo envisions a C-shaped mouse that would be easy to grip  and control, offering a touch-based scroll and button capability. The bottom of the mouse would be flat, so it could glide around on a desktop or other even surface, while the inside would be made of a ribbed rubber material, making it safe and easy to clip around your other gadgets.

Currently, the Clip Mouse is still in the concept stages, but I’m hoping that somebody decides to make these. I’d definitely buy one if they ever come out.
