Are Blood Bricks the Future of Building?

Take the blood of a freshly slaughtered animal. Mix thoroughly with preservatives and sand, pour into square molds, and bake for one hour. Allow to cool—then build your home from the result. No, really. More »

Freehand Concept Turns Anything into a Remote Control, is Even Easier to Lose

The first TV remote control was released in 1951. The couch potato’s best friend has seen some improvements since then, but mostly in terms of its performance and capabilities e.g. no wires, more buttons and wider compatibility. A recent design project took a look at improving the physical form and ergonomics of the remote control as well. Here’s one such concept, called the Freehand.

freehand concept by Cleo Jacquet

Designed by ECAL student Cleo Jacquet, the Freehand consists of a pair of small buttons with suction cups on its back. Instead of coming up with a better alternative to the traditional stick form of the remote, the Freehand lets you define the shape of your remote. Do you always have a drink with you when you’re watching TV? Then stick the Freehand on your drink and make it your remote. Stick ‘em on your tablet or smartphone so you can multitask. Stick ‘em on your dog. Because you’re a free spirit.

Obviously the Freehand is way too impractical in its current state. But like the MaKey MaKey and AnyTouch, it’s a sign that the future of consumer electronics could have both software and hardware that can be tailored to our individual tastes. Looking Good Mirror: Who’s That Handsome Devil?

Some people like to obsessively check themselves in the mirror to make sure they look their best. If this describes you, then have I got something for you.

looking good mirror 1

Thabto’s Looking Good mirror looks like a giant pair of eyeglasses, so you can check out your own beautiful mug while at the same time you adjust your own shades. You are so good looking. The dual mirror design actually has another advantage – you and your significant other can primp and preen yourselves side-by-side.

looking good mirror 2The Looking Good mirror sells for £200 (~$350 USD). While that might seem like a lot to spend on a mirror, it’s actually way less than my last pair of eyeglasses cost. Of course, these might look a little ridiculous if I tried to wear them.

LEGO Brick Keyrings: Simple Genius

If you’re always losing track of your keys, it’s nice to have a place to hang them up when you come and go from the house. I’ve got a couple of little hooks on the wall, but I’m digging this idea much more.

lego keychain 1

Designer Felix Grauer came up with the idea of a simple keyring with a LEGO-compatible brick on it. To hang your keys up, simply snap the brick onto a wall-mounted LEGO panel, and you’re set. Make sure to leave them hanging over by one position to make them easy to remove. Not only can you use the blocks to color-code individual keyrings, but you can snap them together to combine rings.

I love simple, smart ideas like this that just plain work. Now all I need is some LEGO bricks with holes drilled in the side of them, and I’ll be all set. I suppose for now, I’ll just have to settle for some of these.

Ferrari Logic3 Scuderia FS1 Air Bluetooth Speaker: Doesn’t Go Fast, But Does Get Loud

Until you’ve tried a Bluetooth speaker, you can’t really understand how useful they can be. Sure, the sound quality isn’t always spectacular, but it always blows speaker built into smartphones and tablets away, and the wireless convenience can’t be denied. Logic3 has just announced a Ferrari-branded Bluetooth speaker dock, which doesn’t really mean a whole lot, since it’s not like you’re going to be driving this thing.

The Ferrari Logic3 Scuderia FS1 Air speaker dock was inspired by the Scuderia Ferrari racing team as well as the GT car’s lines, creases and curves. It’s powered by “Class HD” technology and has an integrated digital signal processor, controlling the crossover and equalization so that it coaxes the best out of your encoded music.

The integrated 30-pin connector will allow you to dock most iDevices and juice them up while they play their tunes. While it’s not as expensive as an actual Ferrari, the $600+(USD) price tag will burn a hole in your pocket, and if I’m going to spend that kind of money on a dock, I prefer the style of the B&W Zeppelin Air, which can be had for just a few dollars more. But if you’re a die-hard Ferrari fan, you can get your hands on the Scuderia FS1 Speaker Dock at a variety of retailers around the world.

Re-Timer: The Stylish, Non-All Nighter Way of Overcoming Jet Lag

Anyone who’s experienced intercontinental jet lag will tell you that it really messes you up. My personal system involves doing an all-nighter the night before I get onto a plane, so that I crash when I land. These goggles might help me actually get more sleep and do away with this all-nighter foolishness.

re timer in situ

The Re-Timer is designed to help reset your body’s internal biological clock so that jet lag effects can be minimized. The goggles emit a soft green light onto the eyes of the wearer, and this is supposed to improve your alertness level, and make getting out of bed easier. Its makers claim the reason why it works is because Re-Timer mimics the effects of sunlight, relying on light to stimulate a segment of the brain which is responsible for regulating our biological clocks.

With that in mind, wearing them could also help manage the effects of seasonal affective disorder (aka the “Winter Blues”), as well as to help those who work the night shift readjust their body clocks.

The Re-Timer was designed on the back of 25 years of research, so I would hope that they would be effective. A pair of Re-Timer goggles costs AUD$249 (~$258 USD).

Litographs Let You Wear Your Favorite Literary Works

Remember the Book Scarves? Well, now you can do more than just wear your favorite story around your neck.

If this campaign on Kickstarter gets, well, kick-started, you might soon be able to wear your favorite work of literature on your shirt. I’m talking about Litographs.

litograph6Printing the entire text of a literary masterpiece on an article of clothing isn’t exactly a new concept, but Litographs managed to take something that has already been done to a different level. Instead of just printing the text on the shirt, they’ve set it so that the cracks and spaces in between reveal an image that’s appropriate for the story.

Check out the gallery below for the first Litographs shirts that are going into production.

Litograph1 175x175
Litograph2 175x175
Litograph3 175x175
Litograph4 175x175
Litograph5 175x175
litograph6 175x175

The project is currently up for funding on Kickstarter, where a minimum pledge of $30(USD) will get you one Litographs shirt of your choice. Contributing $25 more will get you one of Litographs’ prints to hang on your wall.
