FormLabs Form 1 3D Printer Rustles up $1.4 Million in Kickstarter Funding

3D printers will definitely change everything, especially as they become widely available. You’ll eventually be able to print everything from toys to car parts to body parts to food with this technology. Aiming to bring high-quality 3D printing to more people, the Form 1 3D printer looks pretty cool and it’s currently being crowdfunded through Kickstarter.

The laser-based printer is capable of great precision – with layers as thin as 25 microns (0.001 inch.) This results in professional quality models without those lumpy ridges typical of cheap desktop 3D printers. Because of its printing process, a small amount of hand-finishing is required to clean up excess plastic residue, but the finished models are worth it.

There seems to be a lot of demand for affordable, high quality 3D printers. The Form 1 hit $1 million after 50 hours on Kickstarter, and has raised about $400,000 in the last four days. Almost 1,000 backers already have committed to buy the printer. I know, I’d like one in my place, too. The first two levels have sold out, so you’ll have to pledge $2,699(USD) to get yours.

The project still has 23 days of funding left, but the company will likely sell out before the funding period is over.  To avoid shipping constraints, FormLabs plans on stopping funding at $2.8 million, so that everyone can receive their printers in a timely fashion in the Spring of 2013.

Leaf Thermometer Tells Temperature by Changing Color

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, fall is upon us. The leaves are already changing colors here in Chicago, a constant reminder that winter is coming. These special paper leaves are designed to work as thermometers, providing a vague sense of the weather by changing colors.

Inspired by actual leaves, designer Hideyuki Kumagai created these paper leaves which are embedded with a chemical that changes color based on temperature. When the leaf turns brown, it’s cool out, when it’s green, it’s temperate, and when it’s yellow, it’s hot.

These leaves come in packs of either 5 larger or 8 small and sell for $22(USD) over at Re!Ex!!Japan!!!. If you happen to live in Japan, I’m sure you can get them for less – or you could just install a weather app on your phone and watch the actual leaves change colors.

Put Down Your Gun and Pick up a Book (or is that the Other Way Around?)

Take a look at the gun this woman is wielding. Sure it doesn’t looks like it could fire any ammo, but it still looks pretty badass. What if I told you it wasn’t a gun at all, but it was a custom-bound book? Libertarians Librarians, rejoice!

Yes, this impressive bit of hand book-binding is the work of Montreal’s Strikebooks Bindery. It’s designed to look like a full-size sub-machine gun, but is actually a functional writing journal.

Inside, of the leather covers, you’ll find 84 pages of high-end blank paper, along with black suede endpapers. It’s not exactly the most practical of places to keep your diary, but it’s definitely unique. Of course, all this meticulous craftsmanship comes at a price, with the sub-machine gun book selling for about $523 (USD), and taking about a month to build to order.

They also sell a smaller book that looks like a revolver, and it goes for about $240.

Retractable Printer adjusts its size to your needs

Printers are usually a must-have at offices. You never know when you may have to snatch a few quick prints of that important document that needs to be in hard copy. In fact, printers have also find a space at homes where they are utilized for a whole host of things, from printing written assignments to doing that from-home job at the last minute.

However, the size of the printers can be a problem. Put it in your work-space and it seems like a giant machine occupying the greater part of the desk. The usefulness admitted, the clutter of a printer can be a little annoying. Neilson Navarrete has now presented a concept design of a really cool printer which adjusts to different sizes. (more…)

This Perforated Bill Would Make It Super Easy To Literally Split the Check [Wish You Were Here]

You may be at a point in your life where splitting the bill comes off as tacky, but everybody’s been in that position where it’s totally necessary. For those times, like college, the Go Dutch Bill would come in super handy, if it actually existed. More »

Balance Seesaw Ensures a Fair Ride for Kids, Big and Small

If you ever went riding on a seesaw when you were a kid, you know how unrewarding the experience could be if the kid on the other side weighed decidedly more or less than you. But thanks to the laws of physics, one designer has come up with a solution to this problem.

balance see saw

Industrial designer Honghai Yu’s Balance seesaw offers an adjustable seating design which fixes the balance problem by allowing the lighter of the two children to pull their seat out, and moving one child further away from the pivot point. The result – a smooth ride on the teeter-totter for all. It’s not clear, though how significantly the riders’ weights could differ for this to work before the length of the seat extension became impractical. I’m sure some of the physics geeks out there could help calculate that for us.

It’s an ingeniously simple solution to an age-old playground problem. There’s no word on if or when the Balance seesaw will show up in parks, but it did take home a 2012 iF concept design award.

Go Dutch Bill Lets You Split the Tab, Literally.

It’s pretty common for big groups to go out and eat together, and then split the tab afterwards. But the process of splitting up the bill can be pretty tedious, since someone usually has to break out the calculator (or calculator app) and add up the amount that each person has to pay.

But not with the Go Dutch Bill.

Go Dutch BillIt’s a billing system that automatically churns out split-able (is there even such a word?) receipts so each member of the group can just grab the tab with their order and pay for it accordingly. It’s an extremely fun and novel concept, even though we’ll probably never see it come to light because it might be pretty complex to apply in practice.

But I’d love to be wrong on that one because this concept is totally awesome.

Facebook Messenger 20 for iPhone brings new design to conversations, swipe left for friends list

Facebook debuted the new look of its dedicated Messenger app on Android last week and and just as promised, now it’s available on the iPhone as well. Facebook Messenger 2.0 brings a new SMS-style bubble layout to conversations, a swipe left gesture to reveal one’s friends list and the ability to push the friends you message most to the top of the list. As mentioned along with the Android update this is a part of a new release schedule cycle that should see updates arriving every 4 – 8 weeks. That means you can mark your calendar for the next refresh if this is your social network of choice, but for now just grab the latest version from iTunes.
