Belt Buckle Knife Will Have You Dropping Your Pants for Protection

Belt buckles are getting crazier and more creative, and the Belt Buckle Flask and Arcade Coin Slot Belt prove this point. Something that’s still novel but on the more serious side is the Belt Buckle Knife.

Unlike the others, this buckle was designed to blend in and look just like your typical buckle. But once its undone, you’ll have access to a 2.5-inch long blade that you can use to fight off attackers, crooks, and whoever else is making unwanted advances toward you.

The other end of the buckle can also be used as a bottle opener, although I’m pretty sure you’ll freak a couple of people out if you whip it out and they see the blade on the other end. And certainly, you won’t be taking this thing through airport security.

There are many similar belt knife buckles available, although we’ve got no leads on where you can buy the one above. If you do, though, let us know.

Chocolate Vinyl Record: Eat to the Beat

One of the disadvantages of vinyl records is that they degrade each time they’re used. Breakbot’s record exacerbates that, but it’s also better in one aspect: you can eat it after you’re sick of listening to it, because it’s made entirely out of chocolate.

The yummy storage device contains songs from the French DJ’s latest album By Your Side.

Here’s one of the tracks that comes out of the chocolate:

The chocolate record is limited to 120 copies and is available from Colette for about $22 (USD). You can get the non-edible but longer lasting record on Amazon.

Concrete Wallpaper Perfects That Cozy Cold War Bunker Look [Wallpaper]

If you grew up at the height of the Cold War and remember spending many nights in your family’s fallout shelter, perhaps warm colors and relaxing patterns just don’t feel homey to you. If stark gray walls are the only thing that says ‘home sweet home’ this faux concrete wallpaper turns any room into an emotionless bunker. More »

Solar Sunflower Charger Offers Flower Power

Looking for a solar charger for your gadgets, but want something other than a black box with a solar panel glued to it? Then Check out XD Design’s latest creation – the Solar Sunflower, a gadget charger perfect for those with or without a green thumb.

solar sunflower 1

Designed to look like a small, potted sunflower, you can place it in a window or bring it with you outside to charge up your mobile devices. It’s got a powerful 2500 mAh rechargeable battery built in, so it’ll hold onto some juice even when the sun goes down. It’s got a USB connector for charging your smartphones and other small gadgets (sorry, no tablets), and a mini-USB input, which I can only assume is for charging its internal battery up without sunlight.

The Solar Sunflower is available from Design3000 for €59.50 (~$77 USD), and for wholesale purchasers over on XD Design’s website now.

Portal Turret Gas Mask Will Violently Filter Your Breathing Air

Nowadays, kids are into violence.  Guns, explosions, fist fights – you can’t deny that these have all become an integral part of the gaming experience.  Borderlands 2?  Violent.  Halo 4?  Violent.  All 50 million versions of the same game?  (CoD.)  Violent.

Portal is one of the more docile games in terms of getting injured, but we’ve taken one small part of that experience and focused on it in all kinds of different creations. Which part is that, you ask?  The part that shoots things, of couse – the turret from Portal!  One minute it’s your friend, the next it’s stabbing you in the back.  With bullets.  Still recovering emotionally from Wheatley’s betrayal.

A guy by the name of TwoHornsUnited, who understands the concept of two objects being stronger than a single object, has created this awesome tribute to Portal.  No, I don’t think it will actually protect you from noxious gas, but it sure as heck will make the neighbors pee their pants when I crawl in through the window holding my Portal gun replica.

Here’s what the mask looks like from the view of the fifty foot woman.  You know – did anyone ever try to reason with that lumbering creature of a woman?  “Are you talking about my wife again?”  HAHA – I’m going to tell on you like I used to in grade school when you’d flick boogers at Jenny.  “So you weren’t talking about my wife?”  No – we already came to the consensus that she looks like that bear Matthew Inman drew.

If you like the Portal Turret Gas Mask, then you’ll definitely want to check out the Portal Webcam.  ”Not really, actually.”  I’m not a mind-reader, you intellectual potato.  Go take a look at the LEGO Portal set while I wallow in my self-pity, which gives off an odd stench.

LAYWOO-D3: 3D Printing Gets Wood

If you follow this site regularly, you know I’m a big believer in 3D printing as one of the major technological movements of the 21st century. We’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg with this budding technology these days, but in 10 years, I bet that 3D printed products and parts will be as ordinary as stuff coming off of assembly lines. As printers get more accurate, faster, come down in price, and can handle new materials, adoption will grow, and soon enough we’ll be printing parts for our cars, houses and bodies using these incredible technological marvels. So when I saw that there’s now a 3D printing material that lets you output wood parts, I was even more excited.

3D printing wood

This material, called LAYWOO-D3 is made from 40% recycled wood, along with binding polymers to hold it together. It’s loaded into a 3D printer as a thin filament, and when printing is complete, it forms a wooden surface not dissimilar from pressboard.

You can even cut it with a saw, grind it or paint it – though it’s not clear how smooth you could make it with sanding. Depending on the temperature you print it at, the color of the wood can vary as well.

While it’s not exactly the finest quality wood, it’s still really cool that you can print wooden components. At this point, the material appears to be designed for the RepRap 3D printer, though it’s not out of the question that it could be used with other devices like the MakerBot Replicator 2. If you’re interested in checking it out, you can purchase it in small quantities from eBay or direct from German RepRap.

This Hat Will Never Lose Its Shape Because It Cannot Be Crushed [Fashion]

The Crushable Baseball Cap is designed to hold its shape no matter where you put it, cram it, fold it, crush it and so forth. Any amount of abuse and it’s still going to look like a baseball cap. If you’ve tried to pack your hats before, you’d know how deformed, dented and even demented those hats can get after a long trip. More »

Book-Shelf or Reading Chair? The Choice Is Yours. [Beautiful]

Everyone loves the aesthetic of an unorganized pile of books. The Once Upon a Time bookshelf, by Fabio Vinella, is just that, but certainly much better looking. Once Upon a Time, a beautifully built walnut bookshelf, features a useful platform that can be home to a reading lamp, or made into a seat if you enjoy lounging amongst your sacred tomes. The only drawback (besides costing $4200), is that certain slots only fit certain sized books, so plan accordingly. [Fabio Vinella via Design Milk] More »

Adobe Edge swells to include Tools & Services, streamlines the designer web

Adobe Edge swells to include Tools & Services, streamlines the designer web

Adobe really wants web designers to kick things up a notch. Not satisfied with where Edge has gone so far, it just released a full-fledged Edge Tools & Services suite to cover the bases for polished desktop and mobile pages on most any modern platform. Motion tool Edge Animate (formerly Edge Preview), automated previewing tool Edge Inspect (formerly Shadow) and mobile app packager PhoneGap Build have all arrived in the suite as version 1.0 releases, and come with both Edge Web Fonts as well as TypeKit to spruce up text. A pair of pre-release utilities, Edge Code (Brackets) and Edge Reflow, are also joining the group to tackle the nitty-gritty of editing web code and layouts. Any of the apps will readily cooperate with third-party software, although they won’t always be cheap: while most of the Edge suite is free to use in at least a basic form as long as you have a Creative Cloud membership at any level, Edge Animate is only free during its initial run and should eventually cost either $15 per month or $499 in a one-time sale. For pros that want to burnish their corner of the web to a shine, the result just might be worth the expense.
