The Cube Tube Improves Upon the Ordinary Ice Tray

I use ice cubes regularly (who doesn’t?) but I find filling up the ice trays after all the ice has been used up to be quite the chore. There’s the task of having to pour water slowly into each compartment and make sure it’s not too full or not too empty, before slowly walking back to the freezer to put the tray back in. There’s also the mess and sanitation risk of having to handle each cube by hand.

Cube Tube
A neat solution to this is the Cube Tube. It’s basically a square-shaped container that you’re supposed to fill with water. Then you insert the divider that does all the work for you, twist it in to seal it, and pop the entire thing into the freezer. And voila, you’re done! No muss, no fuss, and definitely no spillage.

Pretty convenient, right?

They’re not for sale yet, although the projected price for these Cube Tubes are about $7 to $8 when they go into production. For the convenience it brings, I’d say that’s a reasonable price. Check them out on Quirky for more information.

Life Meter Cigarette: Smoke Too Many and It’s Game Over

We can learn a lot from video games. Check out these smokes for gamers. They might just help you quit by incorporating a series of life-meter hearts that showing your current health. At the end of the smoke, they give you the option to continue.

gamer smokes
Sadly this isn’t real, but just a concept by designer German Ljutaev. If someone even tried to make it real, some people would whine and claim that it targets kids. No, it doesn’t. It targets older people who are nerds and happen to smoke.

The idea is that it gives you a visual reference that you are doing something dangerous each time you light up, using a gamer theme. Admittedly, it would probably encourage nerds who smoke to smoke more. Only because when we are asked to “Continue Y/N” we are too used to hitting continue. It’s a great design though.

Use These Interlocking Wooden Ninja Stars As Coasters, Trivets, Or Weapons [Design]

Nobody wants a unitasker wasting space in their kitchen. Which is why we love designer Michiel Cornelissen’s laser-cut Zesch coasters. By themselves they keep condensation from a glass or bottle off your fine wood furniture, while looking like wooden shuriken you can use to fend off a ninja attack. But thanks to a clever mathematical design, the coasters can be connected to form larger trivets that safely hold hot pots or warm serving trays. Too bad the $70 price tag (for just 14 pieces) feels like a not-so-stealthy attack on our wallets. [Michiel Cornelissen via Core77] More »

The Original Logos of Tech Companies Were All Terrible [Design]

Floppy Disk Bags Have More Storage Capacity Than You Remember

Remember floppy disks? Seems like I last used one a very long time ago, and they’ve gotten quite useless since USB flash drives amped up the storage capacity. That didn’t stop Etsy store owner Roxanne Gibson of trying to find a way to reuse all of those forgotten floppy disks to create some whimsical and geeky bags.

Roxanne’s store Geekki Boutikki, apart from having a cute name, is selling these great bags that are made out of old 3.5″ floppy disks. The bags can be used as lunch boxes, geeky purses, or for carrying around hundreds of USB flash drives.

Tokyoflash Kisai Online Watch: The Matrix is on Your Wrist

Here’s another example of a user-submitted design that’s been made into an actual watch by Tokyoflash. It takes a bit of time before you realize what you are looking for when you glance at the face of this watch, but once you have, telling the time is easy.

The design was originally submitted by Samuel Jerichow, and can now be yours. The Tokyoflash Kisai Online has a display that’s made of continuous vertical lines, which kind of remind me of the source code display in The Matrix.  The unbroken lines of the encrypted display can be broken with a flick of the wrist thanks to the built-in accelerometer, revealing the time through a display of squiggly vertical lines.

Just turn your head sideways and you’ll see how easy it is to read.

The Kisai Online is available with a silver or black band in blue, red, or natural LCD display. This will be a limited edition that will retail for $169 (USD), but you can get for the next couple of days for just $149 directly at Tokyoflash.

An Extra Strap Lets This Watch Fit Around Your Winter Gear [Watches]

It’s next to impossible to check the time on your watch when bundled up for winter activities—not to mention the unpleasantness of baring your arms in sub-zero temperatures when pulling up your sleeves. So Dietrich’s ED01 watch is specifically designed to be worn on the outside of your winterwear, using a set of stretchy elastic straps. More »

Was This Beautiful Kettle Inspired By a London Landmark? [Beautiful]

As far as electric kettles go, DeLonghi’s Brilliante is a run-of-the-mill way to heat water. There’s no timer, no temperature settings, not even a whistle. But what it lacks in functionality, it makes up for in form with a faceted body reminiscent of London’s 30 St. Mary Axe tower. More »
