Swimmable Mermaid Tails Are an Embarrassing Way to Drown [Mermaids]

Monika Naumann’s three daughters simply adore all things mermaid. And, fortunately for the daughters Naumann, their mother will do whatever it takes to ensure her girls have their hearts’ desire. It doesn’t matter that mermaids aren’t real! If they want to be little Ariels, they will be little Ariels! More »

Hide a Chair in Your Living Room Table for That Unexpected Extra Guest [Beautiful]

We’ve seen tables that hide chairs inside before, but those ones had looks which ensured you’d only reveal the secret in the most dire of situations. In the case of Al-Hamad’s Little Oyster, this transforming table is beautiful enough to put to use in the most casual of situations. More »

Six Designs That Would’ve Been Impossible Without Computer Modeling [Design]

After three decades on the market, Autodesk’s software has radically transformed modern architecture, science, and art. In downtown San Francisco, Autodesk exhibits a rotating 20-item gallery showing twenty of its most impressive design feats. On a recent tour, Gizmodo saw the stunning range of the program’s capabilities. Engineers use it to plan the most the world’s major buildings, and scientists use it to make scale models of molecules. For an artist, it’s a way to finally design a giant dinosaur made of LEGO. More »

CHAIR. Do I Have to Spell It out for You?

This chair combines sitting with education in a fun new way. See the word CHAIR. Say the word CHAIR. Put the letters together to create the chair. Then sit down and relax because learning is hard stuff.
chair
This fun design for a chair seems pretty obvious once you see it. In fact I’m surprised we haven’t seen this design before. This clever take on the butt-rest comes from designer Eric Ku. It’s called the Chair/Chair chair because really what else would you call it?

The letters spell out “chair” and they also connect together to make the chair. Once constructed, the design looks pretty modern and neat and not at all like letters. Well, not too much. Now I’d like to see a couch made the same way.

Clone Troopers Recreate Famous Scenes

If you’re a disgruntled clone trooper and you’re just sick of fighting other people’s battles for The Empire, why not quit and get a new job as a photography model. Actually, these photos were created by a Canadian art teacher using Star Wars figurines (and he didn’t use Photoshop!)

These images are part of David Eger’s 365 Days of Clones. He started this project as part of a New Year’s resolution, and I have to say that it’s pretty cool. I’ve never seen clones do so many interesting things before. Usually, they’re just slumming it for The Empire. Each photograph was taken on the anniversary of the original work. He even recreated paintings, like Pablo Picasso’s Guernica and Leonardo Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man.

You can check out all of his photographs on his dedicated site, 365 Days of Clones.

And here’s a bonus image that has nothing to do with clone troopers, but it’s awesome anyhow.

Toggle Light Switch Plates Complicate the Basic Light Switch

The first thing most people do when they get home is flick the lights on. The last thing they do before they leave for work or to go out is flick the lights back off. Light switches nowadays are designed to make this process easy. One flick, one press, one quick easy movement to turn the lights on or off.

Something that wants to make doing this everyday task a whole lot more difficult is the Toggle Light Switch Plate. It looks pretty good, although I doubt it will do any favors for people who are constantly in a hurry.

It’s designed to go over light switches that are designed to be flicked on and off. Once it’s there, the person would have to move pull the lever going from “on” to “off” and vice-versa instead of just hitting the switch like they usually do. They’re available in a few different designs if the first one isn’t complex enough for you.

Want one for your own light switch? They’re available from Green Tree Jewelry’s Etsy shop for $39.95 to $49.95(USD) each, were you can find even more unusually complicated light switch covers.
