Gundam-Themed Hotel Rooms Meet Every Gundam Fans’ Needs

Hey, Gundam fan. Yes, you – I’m talking to you. It seems like you’re not alone in your desire to own and have everything that screams Gundam, because the folks over at Tokyo’s Pacific Le Daiba probably knew that there were more fans like you in the world.

Gundam HotelThree rooms at the said hotel have been renovated and filled with oodles of Gundam memorabilia. Not only that, but they’ve been completely redecorated to look as if you’ve stepped into some kind of Gundam gallery.

The rooms have a cockpit to reenact your favorite scenes from the anime, sheets and bedding to reflect its ‘real’ owners, and you’ll be greeted by awesome art from your favorite characters the moment you wake up.

Pacific Le Daiba shelled out about 10 million yen ($125,000) to turn their hotel rooms into these themed suites. Lucky for you, you’ll only have to pay about 27,000 yen or $338(USD) a night to stay in one these rooms.

The Next Microsoft: The branding Surface deserves

Think Microsoft and what do you get: old, enterprise, and well behind the times, perhaps? Not if one designer has his way; Andrew Kim may not have a contract with Microsoft, but that hasn’t stopped him crafting a whole new branding strategy that ditches the “Windows” pane of today and replaces it with a crisp parallelogram Kim calls the “slate”, before pulling in Windows Phone, Surface, Office, and Windows under some straightforward new headings.

We’ve featured Kim’s design work before, including his Butterfly smartphone concept all the way back in 2007, and his widely-shared HTC 1 Android phone concept of 2010. “The Next Microsoft” is arguably his best work yet, however, ditching even the 2012 logo refresh for something we could easily see appearing on the front of packaging and in adverts.

Under Kim’s strategy, Windows Phone would be moved in under Surface branding, with a choice of Surface Tablet or Surface Phone. Windows RT would be renamed “Metro” to better differentiate it from Windows 8 Pro, branded simply “Windows”, and the Metro UI itself would be cleaned up with some improved color schemes and more intuitive interfaces for things like Wallet.

“I decided that Microsoft needs to be a brand that represents the future” Kim says of the project. “Be slightly aggressive unlike Apple and Google’s friendly marketing. Promise to deliver the future today. Be almost science fiction.”

Microsoft has shown a new, rather more dynamic side with Surface, even if it has potentially damaged its relationships with OEMs. Now, it could do a lot worse than give Kim a call and chat future brand strategy.

Legendary Ferrari designer Sergio Pininfarina dies

Legendary Ferrari designer Sergio Pininfarina has died, ending several decades of iconic car design that produced beauties such as the Dino and the 275. Pininfarina passed on Tuesday aged 85, it’s reported, having begun his career as a mechanical engineer but finding real fame with his incredible eye for detail and lines as well as an early recognition of the important of aerodynamics.

In fact, Pininfarina was the first to open a wind tunnel in Italy for use in coachwork design, the facility beginning testing back in 1972. He went on to run the family car design firm, lending his pen not only to Ferrari but to Maserati, Fiat, Peugeot and Mitsubishi, among others.

Along the way, as well as production models, Pininfarina took on special commissions for expensive one-off cars, concepts and prototypes. The 2006 Ferrari P4/5, for instance, rebodied an already outlandish Enzo with a custom shell, and cost around $4m in total to complete. In 2008, meanwhile, the company revealed an electric car, the Pininfarina B0 concept, which managed a 0-62mph dash in just over 6s.

Cars, though, were only some of the vehicles to benefit from Pininfarina’s hand. The company worked on several high-speed train designs, as well as domestic appliances and even the 2006 Winter Olympics torch.

Clip apartment generates own energy and uses recycled waste water

Buildings in America consume nearly 40% of our energy each year along with emitting tons greenhouse gases and other forms of waste. Some people have looked to making buildings self-sustainable such as placing solar panels on the sides of the buildings, but this can be expensive and doesn’t always provide the amount of energy as planned. A group of Thai architects have submitted an idea at Evolo for a very interesting barnacle like apartment that would live off the waste of the rest of the building.
