Terrarium Desk lightens the mood

I am quite sure that folks who live in a tropical country, where it is basically summer all year long, would not be able to identify with the kind of depressing fog descend on one’s mind, body and soul when winter arrives, and the day is shortened considerably. In fact, if one were to remain indoors all day long, working and hacking away on a computer keyboard, that kind of condition will also run the risk of annoying issues arising, especially during the aforementioned winter months. Bear in mind that the lack of sunlight as well as absence of nature will result in a naturally depressing effect, and while it is not possible to work on your notebook in the freezing cold by the lake, how about bringing the “outdoors”, indoors? This is just what Daniel Zeller thinks the doctor ordered, hence coming up with his Terrarium Desk.

The Terrarium Desk is the brainchild of Zeller, as it stemmed from his love for green products as well as his proclaimed desire to “green up my apartment.” After reading his fair share of creative content online while gaining inspiration from the creative efforts of other folks over on Pinterest, Zeller finally gained the relevant boost to come up with the Terrarium Desk. Zeller’s day job is a mobile app developer in Norway who spends plenty of hours at his desk, and this has fueled his determination to add some greenery to his working environment.

Apart from using regular, locally-sourced wood which was artificially aged using “a combination of a blowtorch, steel scrape and wood stain,” the Terrarium Desk comes with a tabletop made from tempered glass, and drawers on each side are made from regular cut glass. Within the Terrarium Desk lies plants like Hedrea Helix, Campulana Portenschlagiana, and other Ikea-sourced greenery. Watering is done once a month or so, making this an extremely easy piece of furniture to upkeep. It seems as though it is going to remain a personal piece of furniture, as Zeller is not ready to commercialize this idea just yet.

LapTuk Pro: Tuck Away Your Laptop Like a Pro

This isn’t the first MacBook workstation shelf that I’ve come across, but the LapTuk Pro does look like a nice sleek option for elevating your display and hiding away your laptop.

The LapTuk Pro has two compartments allowing you to tuck away your laptop and your keyboard underneath. It’s also got a built-in 4-port USB 2.0 hub. You could also use it with an iMac, and use that middle shelf to store you iPad or drawing tablet. While the aesthetic will match many laptops and monitor combinations, it definitely looks like it’s made for MacBooks and Cinema/Thunderbolt Displays. Keep in mind that the product is described as “Aluminum Color” so it’s probably a powdercoated steel and not actual aluminum.

LapTuk Pro costs $94.99(USD) and there’s a simpler variation available that’s called LapTuk that only has a single compartment for $49.99.

UrbanDesk Goes from Bed to Desk (and Vice Versa) in an Instant

When I work from home, I work from my bed most of the time. It’s a bad habit, I know, but I love how I can just take a nap (or rather, a few naps too many) throughout the day when I get tired.

Apparently, a lot of people share the same bad work habits. Because if there were only a few of us, then I doubt we’d see something like the UrbanDesk make its way to Kickstarter.

UrbanDeskAs its name suggests, UrbanDesk is primarily a desk. It also happens to be a bed. The desk is hidden beneath the bed frame, which can easily be lifted up to reveal it. It’s a huge space saver, especially if you work from home a lot or are still studying and live in a pretty tight space.

The project is currently up for funding on Kickstarter. A minimum pledge of $700(USD) will get you your very own UrbanDesk painted in gray. If you’re into DIY, you can also just pledge $50 to get the construction plans for the UrbanDesk so you can build your own – assuming you’re willing to get out of bed to buy the parts and put it together.

Guy Makes Mobile Office from IKEA Parts

Hey, when you have a new baby you have to make some major sacrifices. Less video games, maybe free up some room in the home. Stuff like that. IKEA Hacker Ian from Los Angeles had to give up his home office when a new baby was on the way. Well, he took it as a challenge and created an impressive mobile home office built out of IKEA pieces.

ikea table mod 1 Ian took an IKEA stainless steel kitchen work table, some IKEA computer tower desk trays, two steel tabletops, and two grated steel shelves and made a mobile “office” that could be packed away into a closet when not in use. Judging by the images, he did an awesome job. You can check out a more detailed image of the entire build here.

Well done Ian. How much do you want to bet this thing turns into a diaper changing table as well?

Officeoriginair Table Island Organizer: You Own Private Mountain Island

My desk is pretty messy. I’m not ashamed to admit it, but maybe if I had a desk organizer like this one from Officeoriginair, I’d be more tidy. Its minimalist design is definitely something attractive and distinctive for any desk.

officeoriginair tableisland organizer

The Table Island was designed by the Netherlands-based Officeoriginair for Royal VKB, and it’s basically an office tray that’s made from cork. It’s designed to hold all of your daily items, from your phone, sunglasses, desktop accessories and even your tablet. The different organizing tabs are at different heights, making it look like a mountainous landscape.

You can get your own Table Island for €39.95 (~$50 USD) from Royal VKB. It looks like there might be a black version, but I don’t see it listed for sale anywhere.

This Sleek Desk Has All the Drawers You’ll Ever Need [Design]

Focal Locus Desk & Chair Set Won’t Allow You to Sit or Stand, But I Still Want One

I’ve seen all kinds of office chairs and desks, but I’m pretty sure the Locus series by Focal is the first one that I’ve encountered that encourages people to be in a position halfway between standing up and sitting down. It seems silly at first, but I can actually see myself being comfortable on it. Too bad I can also see myself not being able to afford it.

focal locus desk chair

The Locus desk is made of aluminum, hardwood laminate and polymer. The surface can be inclined up to 18º and the legs can be raised and lowered. But the quirk of the Locus lies in the seat, which as you can see is a bit like a bar stool, except it has a long base that tilts up. The seat itself is not fixed to the base and can be moved up to 10º side to side. The idea is that your butt to be barely on the cushion and your legs stretched out with your feet leaning on the tip of the base.

Aside from the lack of back support, the biggest downside to the Locus line is the price tag. Focal is selling the seat for $500 (USD) and the desk for $950. These are already discounted introductory prices; the regular price will be $650 for the seat and $1150 for the desk. If you’re ready to stand down and sit up, head to Focal’s website to pre-order.
