Apple Rolls Out New Quad-Core, Thunderbolt-Equipped iMacs

Apple - New Macs

Anytime the Apple Store goes down, the rumor mill starts swirling about whether it’s regular maintenance or a new product is about to be released. This morning was no exception – when the store went down, speculation started as to whether or not we would finally see some new hardware. Apple delivered, and when the store was back up, a new line of iMacs was in the Apple Store.
The new iMacs feature Intel’s most recent quad-core Core i5 processors, and can be upgraded to Core i7 processors at the Apple Store, up to 3.4GHz. Under the hood, they also feature brand new AMD Radeon HD graphics cards. They also feature Intel and Apple’s new Thunderbolt I/O port (the 21.5″ iMac has one, the 27″ iMac has two) for high speed peripherals – although you might have some trouble finding Thunderbolt devices to connect to it.
The new line of iMacs also feature SD card slots, a FaceTime HD camera on the front, and users get the choice of a Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad with their purchase. The price hasn’t changed either: the models start at $1199 retail, and go up based on the configuration option you select.

Samsung to be First to Release Chrome OS Netbook?

Cr-48_chromelogo.JPGSamsung has an upcoming netbook called Alex, which some are arguing could be the first netbook with Chrome OS. The OS has been released from beta testing, so OEMs are likely almost ready, if not already. But it appears that Samsung might be the first manufacturer to use it under the OEM license.

Some of the specs for the model Alex include: 1280 x 600 display, 1.5 GHz Atom, 2 GB RAM, and a card reader. Right now, this is all just speculation. Hopefully Samsung will release more info soon enough.

No word on release date or price at this point, nor do we have any data regarding if other OS options will be given.

Acer and Nvidia Launch 3D Monitors

500x_3dvisionglasses.jpgAcer is trying to get into more fancy niches by taking a bite into the 3D world. The company is releasing a 3D monitor which will allow users who have computers that can handle 3D to enjoy the experience. However, this is not a glasses-free 3D monitor. You will be required to buy a pair of glasses from Nvidia.

Acer, who does not have the technology for 3D support, had to go to Nvidia who is the only one that has support for it. Thus both companies had to make a deal in order to create the device itself.

The monitors come in two sizes, a 23.6-inch and a 27-inch monitor at $449 and $689, respectively. The glasses required for 3D will cost you $119 a pair.

Toshiba Launches Self-Erasing Hard Drives

Toshiba_Hard_Drive_MK8022GAA_80GB.jpg
Toshiba recently created the perfect hard drive that will allow your data to be safe and still accessible. The MKxx61GSYG Series Hard Disk Drives know when it has been installed in a different machine, which then allows it to erase all of the data and encryption keys as well. Thus,Toshiba claims no one can steal your data.

While this sounds like a good idea, some people will argue that this might be an issue for those who want to use the same hard drive on a new computer. However, Toshiba seems to be marketing this new technology not to home users, but to business users. If that is the case, it could be a life saver for many companies.

The new hard drives have a wide range of sizes starting with a 160GB to 640GB. No price was released or slated date for them to hit retail stores.

Apple Sues Samsung for Copying iPad

ipad.jpgThis year may be remembered as the year of major lawsuits in the tech world. Apple has now sued Samsung for “stealing” the concept and look of the iPad/iPhone. However, no real claim can be made since Apple has no copyright on the system.

This is the third big lawsuit from one tech company to another. Apple has been very protective of the iPad/iPod, even going so far as to block certain apps that could threaten the official Apple apps.

Neither Apple or Samsung have released a statement regarding the lawsuit against Samsung for the Galaxy tablet.

Dell Recycled 150 Million Pounds of E-Waste Last Year

dellreconnect.jpg

Dell, one of the strongest advocates of safely discarding trashed electronics, said it helped dispose of more “e-waste” in fiscal year 2011 than any previous year.

Its Dell Reconnect program, which allows consumers to drop off old computers at Goodwill locations around the country, collected 150 million pounds, or 75,000 tons, of electronic equipment over the last 12 months.

The company says this puts it nicely on track for its ambitious goal of reaching a total of one billion pounds by 2014.

Intel Talks To Potential Thunderbolt Buyers

ThundeboltConnect.jpg
Intel is looking to expand the Thunderbolt brand, which means Intel wants other companies to buy into the new technology quickly. So Intel is doing something about it by sending interested companies kits about the Thunderbolt technology. As of currently, Apple is the only brand that is using the new technology.

Intel has not listed the names of the other companies who have expressed interest. However, we can assume that it will be other computer manufactures. That does not mean in the near future other uses will be found.

Intel has not said if any company is planning to use it besides Apple at this point, but it looks hopeful that it could wind up being a widely accepted technology.

With the new chipset line, AMD is updating the stickers that clearly mark what processing unit your system uses. Two new stickers are being released, which include an eye-catching red, and fun patterns on the two stickers. One will be for the GPU, while the other will be for the actual CPU unit.

AMD hopes that the news stickers will bring brand awareness. AMD has not given any info about when the stickers, and, computers, will debut later on this year.

commodore 64.jpg

The much beloved and (for most intents and purposes) long defunct Commodore 64 platform is set to make a comeback. Commodore has re-released the iconic early personal computer, offering it in a number of configurations, ranging in price from $250 to $895. On the high end of the scale, you get a 1TB hard drive, Blu-ray drive, and 4M of RAM.
The product comes as Commodore re-asserts its ownership of its own brand. Said Peter Bromage, a VP at the company, “I’m sure you’ll appreciate the Commodore thing has been in a state of flux over the last 20 years,” Peter Bromage, the vice president of sales and marketing for Commodore said in January. “But now the ownership is resolved, we 100 percent own the brand.”
The company will also be offering up a re-issue of its Amiga brand, including the Amiga 1000.
