Intel Hires Will.I.AM for Made Up Job

Will_I_Am_Hologram_CNN.jpeg

Say you’re the world’s largest chip maker, with access to some of the greatest minds in the computer science industry. Who would you be eyeing to become the latest addition to your team? How about that one guy from the Black Eyed Peas. What manner of experience does he have? Well, he appeared as a hologram on CNN during the last presidential election. That was pretty neat, right?

Intel has chosen will.i.am (also known as William James Adams, Jr. to those who frequent his Wikipedia page) for the made up title of “director of creative innovation.” But wait, before you go saying that this is obviously just some title that Intel made up to get some publicity during an otherwise slow news week (how dare you?), the company insists that rapper will be an intricate part of its “compute continuum.”
will.i.am, naturally, is also pretty psyched,
Nearly everything I do involves processors and computers, and when I see an Intel chip I think of all the creative minds involved that help to amplify my own creativity. Teaming up with the scientists, researchers and computer programmers at Intel to collaborate and co-develop new ways to communicate, create, inform and entertain is going to be amazing
In the meantime, will.i.am has a Superbowl Halftime Show to perform at.

Laptop Stolen, May Have Cured Cancer

couple cancer laptop.jpg

How many times do we have to tell you to back up your data people? Let this serve as an object lesson–two leading cancer researchers at Oklahoma University had their computer stolen recently.

It may have contained the cure for prostate cancer–or, at the very least, some vital clues in the fight against it. Sook Shin and her husband Ralf Jankecht had years of data on the thing. And no, they didn’t back up. Sin told the press, “I’m so devastated, and I feel so guilty.”

The couple is offering $1,000 for the safe return of their 13 inch Macbook, which was stolen from their Jetta parked outside of an Oklahoma-area Panera Bread, after a thief broke the window and stole a computer bag containing the computer.

“Please return the computer with the data saved,” added Jankecht. “This would tremendously help us and you would do something for society.”

Geek Harnesses Nature, Turns Outdoors into PC Cooling System

duct5_large.jpg

Harness the power of nature’s winter wrath by turning it into your own PC cooling system. Hack-a-Day showed off a geek’s setup of his rig next to a window with, what looks like, a dryer duct enabling a seamless connection between the great outdoors and his tower. The computer system’s internal fan sucks in the cold air, which when mixing with the hot air inside the PC may cause unwanted condensation. Ultimately leading to rig death.

While a brilliant showing of how to “go green” with an o-natural cooling system, it’s not a perfect system. Even though the outdoor portion includes a hood, damper, and some Scotch Brite pads as a filter, there’s always the factor of having your PC a little too cold. Though this could be the poor-man’s solution to keeping high-end heated components cool without a liquid-based system.

OLPC CTO: Windows 8 on XO a Possibility

OLPC CES 2011.JPG

The folks from One Laptop Per Child were on-hand at this year’s CES, courtesy of the organization’s hardware partner, Marvell. I had the opportunity to chat up OLPC’s chief technology officer, Edward McNierey, who was showcasing a forthcoming version of the company’s flagship XO laptop.

The new system, due out later this year, if the organization’s first to be built around an ARM chip. In light of Microsoft’s announcement earlier this week of an new version of Windows capable or running on an ARM processor, I had to ask whether the company had any plans to partner with Microsoft on a future system.

McNierey joked that the company had finally managed to create a version of hardware that couldn’t run a Windows OS, adding that the organization’s head, Nicholas Negroponte had predicted that Microsoft would soon issue an arm compatible OS, prior to the recent announcement.

Xi3: Tiny Modular Desktop

IMG_2675.JPG

The xi3 made a big splash on the show room floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center yesterday–it’s definitely one of those product you’ve got to see to fully appreciate. The above unit was the first model I saw. It was strapped to the rear of a flat screen monitor, which dwarfed it by comparison.
The thing is tiny–palm-sized, in fact–far small than other compact desktops like Apple’s Mac Mini and Dell Zino HD. And unlike those systems, the xi3 is designed to be highly customizable–the “last system you’ll ever need,” says its manufacturer.
The system’s innards are divided into three sections–for RAM and two I/O boards, making it easy to quickly swap out components. The tiny system is also extremely efficient, using less than 20 watts to run.
The xi3 is arriving early this year, starting at $850 for a base unit.

Lenovo Le Pad Up Close

Lenovo u1 stand.jpg

Lenovo’s U1/Le Pad looks to be one of the big hits of CES, thus far. Granted, it’s still early in the show. Heck, the show technically hasn’t even started yet. Still, the thing is darned cool. It’s an iPad-like tablet (the U1), which converts into a laptop with the help of a dock (the Le Pad).

For the time being, the device doesn’t appear to be coming to the US, sadly, so we’ll just have to admire it from afar. I did manage to snap a shot of the device up close tonight, and seeing it in person only makes me want one all that much more.
