David Brevik reveals how Diablo 2 almost gained some MMO-like features

Max Schaefer was one of the original developers for the Diablo 3 franchise, and who is now working on Torchlight 2. Back in June we reported that according to Schaefer, Diablo 3 was originally intended to be an MMO much like World of Warcraft, and this is a fact that has been recently reaffirmed by another former Blizzard developer, David Brevik who also happened to be one of the co-creators of Diablo 1 and 2. In an interview with Eurogamer, Brevik revealed that plans for an MMO-like game had originally been planned with Diablo 2: (more…)

Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 now available

Yes, after plenty of waiting, Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 is now available for download. We have seen character class previews of Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 in the past week, in addition to a preview of what Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 is able to deliver, so why not make the effort and download the patch in order to take advantage of all the hard work that the Blizzard team has put in over the past few weeks – perhaps even months. Bear in mind that this particular Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 will be available only to those who live in North America, and the usual applies. You cannot download patch 1.0.4 until the patch ends up live in your home region, and those who log in from a European or Asian client, you will just have to be patient and wait for this patch to be released before installing it.

Apart from that, should your home region be in the Americas, then you cannot log into Europe or Asia via Global Play, at least not until after patch 1.0.4 is live in those regions. Go on now, what are you waiting for?

Diablo III upgrades to level 160 with Paragon system

Players of the fastest selling PC game in history Diablo III will be glad to find this week that Blizzard, the creator of the game, has added an upgrade that allows characters to level up past 60. This limit on the game has existed since the game’s introduction and now it’ll be dashed apart with a feature called the Paragon system. This new system has you able to move past your initial 60 levels and into a whole new set of 100 levels that bring on Magic Find and Gold Find that stick to you like stats, and you’ll get a whole lot more shiny in groups as well.

This system allows players to progress past level 60 and is what Blizzard hopes will be a way for people to stay interested in one character rather than having to start over constantly when they’re bored with their top-level hero. Blizzard describes the Paragon system with the following set of bonuses:

• After you hit level 60, any further experience you earn from killing monsters will begin to count toward Paragon levels.
• There are 100 Paragon levels

– Every Paragon level will reward you with:
• Core stats such as Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Vitality in amounts similar to what you’d gain from a normal level
• 3% Magic Find and 3% Gold Find

• In addition, a distinctive increasingly-impressive border will surround your character portrait in the in-game party frame to denote your Paragon progression, with a new frame earned after every ten levels. Your Paragon level will also be visible to other players wherever your normal level is shown.

This upgrade also changes the game to include a 300% cap on Magic Find and Gold Find. When you reach level 100 in Paragon, you’ll no longer need Magic Find or Gold Find gear because your character will be maxed out no matter what. Nephalem Valor, a system which gives level 60 characters incentive to fight multiple enemies in the same game rather than leaving a game to create a new game to fight that same monster. With the Paragon system in place, NV also adds 15% to your experience gain to level up inside the Paragon system.

So head on out and start leveling up 100 more levels, all you Diablo III addicts! Then wait a few more months and perhaps there’ll be more levels still, with another different title besides!

Be sure to check out the diverse timeline of Diablo III news bits and columns below, and let us know if you’re playing the game right now!

Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 could be released on Tuesday

Blizzard’s community manager Bashiok mentioned a while back that the upcoming Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 could be arriving in the fourth week of August, and it seems that may very well be true and that the patch itself could be rolled out as soon as Tuesday. According to reports, Blizzard has uploaded the patch in advance onto the patching servers, which means that there is a very good chance that the patch could be rolled out tomorrow to players logging into the game. Patch 1.0.4 is expected to bring about a lot of changes to the game, namely changes to the way skills are used, Magic Find, monster difficulty, Legendary item changes and etc. Hopefully these changes will be big enough to convince players to come back to the game who might have otherwise been frustrated at the game, which based on the sentiments of the majority, felt like something of a letdown compared to its predecessor. In any case this is by no means a confirmation, so fingers crossed!

Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 class previews for the Witch Doctor, Monk and Demon Hunter now available

Yesterday we reported that Blizzard had released previews of some of the upcoming changes that they were going to make to the Wizard and Barbarian classes in Diablo 3. Well if you don’t play either class and play any of the three remaining ones, i.e. Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter or Monk, you’ll be interested to learn that Blizzard has since released the preview of changes they will be making to those classes come patch 1.0.4. As Blizzard has done with the Wizard and Barbarian, their goals remain the same for the remaining three classes, which as (as Blizzard themselves put it) to “identify the unpopular or hard-to-use skills, figure out what’s not working, and then make them better.” So if you’re curious as to what sort of changes you might be able to expect (good or bad) when patch 1.0.4 is released towards the end of the month, head on over to the Diablo 3 website for the details! Diablo 3 patch 1.0.4 class previews for Wizard and Barbarian revealed

As we get closer to the fourth week of August, Blizzard has begun to reveal more changes that they will be making to the game once patch 1.0.4 is released to the public. We have covered the changes they will be making Legendary items, and Blizzard has since released more previews of the changes they will be making for the classes. So far only the Barbarian and Wizard class has been detailed, but we expect the remaining classes to receive the same amount of attention during the course of the coming weeks (if not days). While you can head on over to the Diablo 3 website for the full run down, the previews basically touch on the different skills and runes of both classes, and how they were making changes to them to make some skills be more attractive.

When Diablo 3 was being developed, some of the things that Blizzard touch upon was how they did not want classes to have a cookie cutter spec, unlike World of Warcraft where classes were pretty much locked to a certain style of playing due to it being able to output more DPS, survive longer or heal better. The changes that patch 1.0.4 will make to Diablo 3 will attempt to steer players away from pre-made builds and to explore their options and less popular skill choices. So if you’d like to learn more, the Wizard preview can be found here, while the Barbarian preview can be found here.

So, are you looking forward to the Diablo 3 1.0.4 patch update? If you have answered in the affirmative, then you might be pleased to learn that there are changes made to the range of Legendary Items in the game with patch 1.0.4 as well. Most folks are not too happy with what Blizzard has done to Legendary items in Diablo 3, where they were basically Rare items with plenty of flavor text. Now, things are about to change with the 1.0.4 patch, as the Legendary Items are now given a sense of being “unique” – and Blizzard gets the ball rolling by introducing custom effects to more than 50 of them. Diablo 3 Starter Edition is free-to-play for everyone

They say that there is no free lunch in this world, and the saying holds true. However, no one said anything about a free-to-play version of Diablo 3 – coming in the form of the Diablo 3 Starter Edition. This is not the complete game, but rather, a limited version of Diablo 3 which will see your character fight his or her way through to level 13 while facing off with the Skeleton King boss in Act I. This particular edition was restricted to those who were waiting (patiently, I might add) for credit card purchases to be processed, or had recently received a guest pass from a friend. (more…)

Six Diablo 3 players have exact same items – what gives?

When it comes to the virtual gaming community, the relationship dynamics in there are pretty much the same as that of in the real world – we all have to learn to look out for one another, lest we are taken advantage of. Case in point, a user known as “mcstew” has unearthed six different players on Diablo 3 that have the exact same items – with the offhand “Arcanum Mind” being one of the more highly sought after items which was quoted to be “worth 500mill++”. This particular observation has yet to lead to any of the accounts being closed, and could it be just a bug in the game that has allowed all six players to own identical super powered items that see action with their Level 60 characters? Do you think it is a blatant case of cheating, or just one lucky scenario in the world that has millions of players scurrying around Diablo 3 servers until now? The jury is still out on this one, and I too, would want to sit this out.
