Microsoft Hotmail and Outlook.com outage continues

If you’re a user of Hotmail or Outlook.com who is waiting for an important e-mail message, we have some bad news for you. Microsoft currently lists both Hotmail and Outlook.com as being down. That means that users of both of those services won’t be able to log into accounts.

hotmail-down

Microsoft so far has detailed the Hotmail problem stating that “we are having a problem accessing e-mail.” Microsoft says that you may not be able to see all of your e-mail messages and that it’s working to fix the service right now. That update was made as of March 12 at 4:35 PM.

Microsoft has also noted that it’s taking longer to fix the problem and it hoped and that it will provide an update by March 13 at 8:12 AM. Microsoft also points out that it’s having the same problem with Outlook.com and is working to restore service. The first update for Microsoft for Outlook.com was posted March 12 at 4:35 PM.

Microsoft isn’t offering any hard details on the Outlook.com problem either simply stating that fixing the problem is taking longer than it had hoped. Microsoft says users can expect an update by 8:12 AM today. Microsoft is offered no official comment indicating what may be causing the outage. With all the hacking that has been going on lately, you have to wonder if the service interruption has anything to do with hackers. At this point, there is no indication that Microsoft has been the victim of a hack or that any security issues have caused these outages.

ARGTV platform will let you touch and inspect objects from your favorite TV shows

Augmented reality isn’t anything new. There’ve been a number of augmented reality applications available for smartphones and other devices for a long time. Typically, these augmented reality applications are things that overlay some sort of gaming content over the real-world environment around you.

Mad-Men-001

A company called ReinCloud has recently shown off a very interesting augmented reality TV platform called ARGTV. The application won first-place overall in the TV Hackfest competition recently. According to the CEO of the company, the TV platform would do things like allow a viewer to share a drink with Don Draper from Mad Men.

Using the company’s ARGTV platform you would be able to pick up a virtual bottle of gin like the one being poured on TV and examine it from all angles. You can turn the bottle around and read the label on the back if you wanted to. Users would even be able to purchase an actual bottle of liquor using the TV platform without having to use your phone or turn the TV channel.

This sounds like a very interesting way to improve the interactivity with TV advertising to me. The company expects to ship its ARGTV product in Q3 of 2013. However, that ship date is far from guaranteed at this point because the product has to be fully funded. There’s no indication that the platform is seeking funding via Kickstarter or another crowd sourced funding service.

Literary associations oppose Amazon’s attempts to gain control over new web domains

We’re all familiar with the portions of web addresses that come after the dot, such as .com and .net. Those suffixes are a basic component of the Internet as we all know and love it today. As the Internet grows and we run out of addresses using the original suffixes, new offerings are crafted by the agency to oversee top-level domains around the world.

amazon

There are some new top-level domains that will be added to expand the addressing system used on the Internet. Some the new proposed suffixes include .book, .offer, and .read. Amazon.com is making an effort to gain control of these new Internet domain names. While Amazon isn’t alone in trying to gain control over these domain names, it’s plans are reportedly coming under more scrutiny than others.

Two major publishing industry groups including the Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers are objecting to Amazon’s request for ownership of the new top-level domain names. According to these associations, placing Amazon in charge of .book, .author, and .read would be a threat to competition and shouldn’t be allowed.

Authors Guild president Scott Turow said, “Placing such generic domains in private hands is plainly anticompetitive.” Barnes & Noble is also opposing Amazon’s request and has filed an objection with ICANN. Amazon and other companies are vying to be the registry for these new top-level domains. Amazon is also reportedly attempting to get control of domains including .movie, .app, and .kindle. Turow says that whatever gains control over these new top-level domains will have an “enormous” competitive advantage.

Reevu shows off the world’s first rear vision motorcycle helmet system

While helmets aren’t required in many states to ride a motorcycle on the streets, a huge number of riders do choose to wear a helmet to help protect them in the event of an accident. One of the complaints of wearing a helmet is that it limits some of your vision and makes it more difficult to see what’s going on behind you. A company called Reevu has a helmet that has the world’s first rear view imaging system built right in.

reevu

The helmet is called the RV MSX1 Motorcycle helmet and has a flip up front. The helmet will be ready for the 2013 riding season and has been tested and approved to DOT standard for the US and ECE 22.05 standards for European markets. The helmet has an integrated optical device that allows motorcyclists to view the road behind them through the helmet.

At first glance you might think that the helmet uses a camera system, but it doesn’t. The optical device that shows the rider what’s behind them uses a number of reflective surfaces that are coated onto a bullet proof material. The optical device bends light over the top of the wearer’s head allowing them to see what’s behind them using their peripheral vision.

The company already has a standard full face model planned (pictured) called the RV FSX1 that will launch later this year. The helmet offers motorcyclists a rearview mirror system. The optic system can be moved to adjust the rearview to suit the rider’s needs. The reflective polycarbonate plate used in rearview system also act as a crumple zone in the event of an accident helping to protect the rider even further.

3Doodler pen continues to annihilate Kickstarter goal

We talked about the really cool 3Doodler pen a few times in the past. This is a pen that allows users to draw in the air using a plastic material. This device reminds me of a 3-D printer distilled down to its most basic elements and crossed with a hot glue gun.

3Doodler-Pen-with-Eiffel-Tower1-580x4351

One of the best parts about the 3Doodler is that the device is so inexpensive with a pledge of $75 giving you the pen and a couple bags of mixed plastic. The downside to pre-ordering this device is that the ship time at this point isn’t expected to happen until February of 2014. That means you’re looking at almost a year before you’ll have the device in your hand.

Last time we talked about the 3Doodler was on February 20 when the device had raised over $456,000 within only a few hours. At the time of writing, the 3Doodler has raised over $2,057,000 and still has 19 days to go. Over 23,000 people have backed the project making it one of the most popular on Kickstarter right now.

If you missed our other reports on this device, it uses ABS strands of plastic allowing you to draw in the air making 3-D sculptures of just about any sort. It’s rather unclear where you can get replacement plastic at this point after you run out of the bag or two that the pen comes with. Funding for the project is set in the March 25, 2013.

Neato Robotics XV Signature vacuums debut

Neato Robotics has unveiled the new XV Signature series robot vacuum cleaner. The company has also unveiled the XV Signature Pro with both new models featuring the company’s square front, low-profile design. The robotic vacuum cleaners are both designed to be able to go under furniture and into corners to pick up the most dirt and pet hair possible.

xvsig

The vacuum cleaners are programmable allowing them to come on and clean on the schedule the owner programs. The vacuums can be set up for daily cleanings, spot cleanings, and will begin to clean instantly at the press of a button. Both of the robotic vacuum cleaners use advanced laser-guided navigation to map the room.

Using that information, the vacuum cleaners are able to choose the smartest cleaning path and the tech avoids stairs as well as furniture. The vacuum can return to its charging station to recharge its batteries and remember where it stopped cleaning allowing it to return after the batteries are full. The XV Signature series promised to pick up 50% more dust than previous models.

The high-powered vacuum picks up dirt, debris, pet hair, dander, and microscopic fibers. The vacuum will work on carpet, wood, tile, and rugs even if those rugs have fringe. The vacuum has integrated filters to remove allergens from the air in the home and particles down to 3 µ in size. The vacuum series use bagless designs. The XV Signature Pro will sell for $449 while the XV Signature sells for $399. The difference between the two models appears to be that the Pro has a combination brush and a blade brush for superior cleaning on multiple surface types.

Artist Liu Bolin at TED2013

Artist Liu Bolin is also known as “The Invisible Man.” He is called The Invisible Man because he is featured in nearly all of his artwork, but it can be very difficult to spot. Take the image below, the artist is featured prominently in that piece, if you can find him.

invsi-man

My favorite piece of art from Bolin is the supermarket shelving piece below. I looked at that particular image several times thinking that the arrangement of cans on the shelves was the art. The artist says that that work with the cans, called “Supermarket,” took about 3 to 4 days to create and no Photoshop skills were used in creating the artwork.

bolin-1

That sort of hiding in plain sight artwork isn’t all Bolin does, he also does standard paintings taking somewhere between three and four hours of work to complete. His work attempts to call attention to social issues typically.

It’s unclear if the artist will only be talking and offering insights into his work at TED2013 or if he will actually have art on display. If he is creating artwork during the event, he could be rather difficult to find.
