Target also selling the iPhone 5c for $79.99 on-contract, now accepting pre-orders

Target also selling the iPhone 5c for $7999 oncontract, now accepting preorders

We’ve already seen Walmart undercut Apple by selling the iPhone 5c for less than the MSRP right out of the gate, but it turns out it’s not the only retailer offering a deal. Target’s also selling the 16GB version for $79.99 on a two-year contract from your choice of carrier, offering a savings of $20. You’ll still pay the same $199.99 for the 32GB model, though, and there’s no similar discount to be found on the iPhone 5s, either (Walmart has knocked it down ten bucks to $189). You’ll find that price in store tomorrow, or you can get your pre-order in on Target’s website now.

Apple iPhone 4S now free on-contract in wake of iPhone 5c reveal

Apple iPhone 4S now free oncontract in wake of iPhone 5C reveal

Just yesterday, the venerable iPhone 4S sat as Apple’s mid-tier smartphone, but now it’s moving into a new role as the company’s go-to option for budget seekers: an 8GB iPhone 4S is now free on-contract. The news follows this morning’s introduction of the iPhone 5c ($99), which brings a dash of color to Apple’s mid-range and replaces the iPhone 5. A similar discount is also in effect for the unlocked iPhone 4S, which now sells for $450 outright for the new 8GB model. Alongside the price drop, the continuation of the iPhone 4S brings a reprieve for Apple’s legacy 30-pin dock connector, which is an important consideration for compatibility-minded folks. Naturally, you won’t find all the latest goodies — or even LTE — in this 2-year old smartphone, but living behind the curve sure is easier on the wallet.

Microsoft’s $100 Surface Pro price cut to stick around, accessory discounts incoming (update: worldwide)

In a move that should surprise few, that August price cut for Microsoft’s Surface Pro — which now starts at $799 for the 64GB version — will remain in effect permanently. WPCentral has also revealed a $40 discount on Touch Covers, that now start at $79, and $50 off of the Surface RT tablet / touch cover bundle that starts at $399. The bundle pricing should kick in today although we’re not seeing it live on the Microsoft Store yet. According to a statement from Microsoft (included after the break) this is based on customer’s “exciting” response to the recent price drops. So, is this enough of a push for you to grab a slate (or two) right now, or would you rather wait for the sequel?

Update: While the original Surface Pro discount only applied in a few locales, we’re hearing that the price in several European and Asian countries is also dropping. Word on price cuts for the accessories has varied from place to place, so depending on your location you may want to keep an eye out.

Microsoft offering Surface RT tablets for $199 to educational institutions

Microsoft offering Surface RT tablets for $199 to educational institutions

If you thought Microsoft’s effort to push Surface RT tablets into classrooms would stop with a 10,000-unit giveaway, you’d be mistaken. Ryan Lowdermilk, a technology evangelist for the company, revealed that it’s offering 32GB Surface RT slates to K-12 and higher education institutions in 25 countries for $199, more than 50 percent off the $499 retail sticker price. Dropping $249 for each unit will snag organizations keyboard-infused Touch Covers, while bumping the cost to $289 will add Type Covers to the package. Education outfits can take advantage of the deal until August 31st (or while supplies last), but individual students won’t be able to snag a Surface at such a deep discount on their own. The post announcing the program has gone offline since its unveiling, but we’ve reached out to Lowdermilk to confirm that the offer is still valid. In the meantime, you can hit the second source link to snatch an order form for school administrators.

Update: It appears the order form has been pulled, so we’ve replaced the second source link with a mirror of the document.

PlayStation Plus adds monthly subscription option for $10, discounts Music Unlimited to $42

PlayStation Plus adds monthly subscription option for $10, discounts Music Unlimited to $42

PlayStation Plus offers do come around every now and then, but Sony has just announced a more permanent addition to the service: the option of a $10 (or 7 euro) monthly membership to supplement the regular 90-day and annual subscriptions. The lack of commitment comes at quite a price, given that the longer contracts bring the the effective monthly cost down to $6 and $4 respectively, but it may still make sense for flighty types. Anyway, once you’re in, you’ll find a secondary, time-limited offer: an annual Music Unlimited Premium subscription for $42 (42 euros), which is okay, but nowhere near the discount offered in 2012. Those who remain outside of Sony’s inner circle can also temporarily get 12 months of Music Unlimited for $60, or half of the usual cost. Lastly, a few more E3 crumbs: the PlayStation Network is now officially called “PSN”, which is pretty much what we called it anyway, and PlayStation Plus also gets a new logo (shown after the break, not that it’s especially shocking.), reflecting reflect its heightened status in the PS4 era

HTC One Discounted On Sprint To $99 For New Customers

HTC One Discounted On Sprint To $99 For New Customers

We know you’re probably eyeing the HTC One after publishing our official preview and review of the device, now the question is what carrier will you be picking it up on. If you’re in the U.S., your choices are AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint. Out of those three U.S. carriers, it looks as though Spring it trying to obtain new customers the most with a new promotion it’s running for the HTC One.

If you’re not a Sprint subscriber and your current contract is ending soon, then you might want to consider making the switch to Sprint as they’re currently taking $100 off the total price of the HTC One making it only $99 with a two-year agreement. Sprint’s “Bring Your Number” discount is only good for new customers, so current Sprint customers need to pay $199 if they want their HTC One. Either way, Sprint is promising its customers will receive the device prior to it officially going on sale on April 19, which should be enough of an incentive for you to pre-order sooner rather than later.

AT&T Plus trial winding down on March 31st

AT&T Plus trial winding down on March 31st

AT&T has been testing the viability of loyalty rewards through a limited AT&T Plus trial over the past year. Unfortunately, time’s up: as you can see in the letter above, the carrier is shutting down the Plus experiment on March 31st, with discounts and fee waivers ending for existing members on May 31st. We wouldn’t expect a follow-up in the near future when AT&T isn’t moving past the trial level “at this time,” according to a spokesperson we reached. Most of us won’t be affected when the Plus test has been limited to a handful of areas, but perks are perks — it’s sad to see them go away.

WSJ: Microsoft to offer discounted Windows 8 software for future small touchscreen laptops

WSJ Windows 8 being discounted to touchscreen manufacturers

In a bid to push the development of small, touch-enabled laptops, Microsoft has started to offer discounts on Windows 8 and Office 2013 to manufacturing OEMs. According to WSJ and Digitimes reports, these price cuts would be reflected in products in the fall. The deal includes Windows 8 plus Office for $30 — a bundle that previously cost $120. Microsoft hasn’t made any official comment on the rumor, although the discounted licensing was apparently offered late last month and will be specific to laptops with touch-enabled screens smaller than 10.8 inches. Now we’ll just have to wait and see how much of that discount will transfer to retail price tags.
