Disney halts game development at LucasArts, moves to licensed Star Wars titles

Disney shuts down game development at LucasArts, moves to licensed Star Wars games

If you’re old enough to have played PC games for more than a decade, LucasArts (originally LucasFilm Games) likely has a permanent place in your heart after a string of legendary adventure and flight combat releases. You’ll unfortunately have to put the company as you knew it squarely in the past — Lucasfilm’s new owner, Disney, is ending internal development at LucasArts. The software house is shifting to a licensing model for Star Wars games, reportedly “minimizing the company’s risk” while expanding the range of games on offer. There’s a chance that in-progress titles like Star Wars 1313 will survive with outside help, according to a spokesperson in touch with GameInformer, but talk of layoffs from Kotaku dampens any chances for direct follow-ups to favorites like Grim Fandango. We won’t mourn too much when personas like Ron Gilbert, Lawrence Holland and Tim Schafer have long since moved on to other companies — still, it’s unquestionably the end of an era for game and movie fans alike.

Disney Pulls The Plug On LucasArts, Star Wars Titles Will Be Licensed

Disney Pulls The Plug On LucasArts, Star Wars Titles Will Be Licensed

Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in October last year. Today it announced that it is pulling the plug on LucasArts, which was the game development arm of Lucasfilm. The studio says that it has decided to shift LucasArts from a development model to a licensing model. This ensures that the risk in brought down to a minimum, while licensing entails a broader portfolio of Star Wars titles from various developers it will be licensed to. What this basically means is that LucasArts will no longer be developing games internally. This move has resulted in an unspecified number of layoffs across the organization.

Disney also confirms that development of Star Wars 1313 is no longer under LucasArts, the future of this title is not certain at this point in time. LucasArts has been responsible for Star Wars titles as well as other video games such as Grim Fandango and The Secret of Monkey Island. Not known right now are the developers to which the Star Wars games will be licensed too. The last game that was released by LucasArts was a Kinect Star Wars title.

Go Inside Your Favorite Cartoon Characters with Disney Anatomy

If Mickey Mouse is really a mouse, then how come he can stand upright? The same question goes for Minnie.

If you’ve ever wondered what Disney’s most famous characters are made up of on the inside, then wonder no more because DeviantArt artist Alessandro Conti did all the thinking and drawing for you. Check out his stylized anatomical drawings of Mickey and the gang and see if the parts agree with science.

Disney Cartoon Character Anatomy

This type of thing is kind of hard to unsee, so I wouldn’t recommend showing these to kids because they’ll probably freak out and hate you for it. Either that, or they’ll hate these characters that they used to love so much instead.

Disney Cartoon Character Anatomy1

There’s Minnie, looking Dainty even with her outer skin peeled off. And take a look at Goofy! I never imagined he’d look this butch without his goofy clothes on.

Disney Cartoon Character Anatomy2

Last but not least, here’s Pluto. I always thought that Goofy was a dog, too, so I always find it puzzling why he’s upright and given the ability to speak when Pluto can’t. Artistic license, I suppose.

Star Wars Episode 7 Conceptual Poster Features Luke, Leia, Han Solo

There’s been a lot of talk lately about Star Wars: Episode 7 now that we know all of the original Star Wars actors were accidentally confirmed by George Lucas himself. With that bit of news, Star Wars fans have immediately become extremely excited about the next film and just what kind of role each of the previous film’s stars will have in the new film.

Illustrator Adam Schickling created a conceptual Star Wars: Episode 7 movie poster that not only has Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford prominently displayed, with wrinkles and all, but also Lando Calrissian himself Billy Dee Williams. Schickling also threw Chewbacca, C-3PO and R2-D2 in there for good measure. (more…)

Doctor Who Storybook Corsets All Have a Happy Ending

We’ve seen a couple of TARDIS corsets before, but hubba hubba, these Doctor Who Storybook corsets look sexy AND tell a story at the same time. They are the product of an artist and a clothing designer getting together to make some awesome clothing.

Artist Karen Hallion and Mad Girl Clothing/Pendragon Studios teamed up to produce these corsets that show off Karen’s artwork which shows some classic story book characters heading off for adventures with The Doctor. The art is pretty amazing and it is a great idea.

You can order them over on Etsy for $195(USD) each. You can choose from The Little Mermaid, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland or Beauty from Beauty and the Beast. And if you prefer van Gogh to Walt Disney, you can always go with this design, with fabric by Studio Fibonacci.

Why have we not seen a companion wearing a corset anyway? I guess it would be hard to blend in with the locals when time traveling.

Latest Hulu rumors suggest it could be up for sale, again

While viewers enjoy promotions like free Star Trek and Kurosawa, Hulu’s owners are once again considering selling the video streaming site. The last bit of news was that News Corp and Disney were considering buying one another out, but according to Reuters, anonymous sources confirm that the board is reaching out to several potential buyers while it considers its options. Another possibility from Variety suggests that the two would remain as part owners, and welcome another party to join, perhaps CBS. This wouldn’t be the first time Hulu’s owners tried to sell the site however, as it went through the whole process — without changing hands — back in 2011. Perhaps this time, with a new CEO in place, all the companies involved can figure out what they want Hulu to be going forward.

Disney mulling over possibility of Star Wars theme park

Remember back in October when Disney bought Lucasfilm for over $4 billion? Disney is looking to put that money to good use, and they’ve already announced that Star Wars: Episode VII will be making its way to theaters in 2015, but it seems the company is looking to expand the franchise even more by possibly creating a Star Wars-themed park at one of the company’s Disney parks.

Screen Shot 2013-03-22 at 11.22.30 AM

According to screenshots taken from a survey that was given to season pass holders and other frequent goers of various Disney parks, the company is asking folks what they would think about a possible “Star Wars themed land at the Disneyland Resort.” Needless to say, Disney may be looking at adding a little bit of Star Wars to its parks, which would be pretty amazing.

Of course, Disney World has been home to the Star Tours amusement ride for some time now, which is a “3D, motion-simulated space flight that launches you into the world of Star Wars.” (Get a feel for it here.) However, it looks like Disney is wanting to expand on that to dedicate an entire section of one of its parks to Star Wars.

Another question in the survey asks people how familiar they are with the Star Wars series, including the characters, settings, and stories, in order to get a feel for how many of their loyal guests know about Star Wars. However, it seems like a pretty obvious question to us, and we bet that as long as Disney built such a park, people will come.

Actual Fix it Felix Machine Headed to Midwest Gaming Classic!

As a video game fanatic, I really loved the movie Wreck-it-Ralph. While there were some actual arcade games in the movie, the machines at the center of the story were all imaginary. Perhaps the most iconic game in the movie is Fix It Felix Jr., and pretty soon you’ll be able to actually play the game.

What you’re looking at here is a Fix it Felix Jr. machine, made by Rick Uhlenhopp at Arcade Skin. It looks like a spot-on recreation of the machine from the movie, and even plays a PC version of the game (not Disney’s Flash version). As you can see from the video below, the machine started off as an original Nintendo cabinet, and much of the magic is done with custom made vinyl skins:

Here it is playing a version of the game written by SJAAK, but there’s another version by Rick’s buddy BadBoyBills which is going to be installed on the machine before it’s complete.

While you won’t be able to find this machine in an arcade, you’ll be able to see it in person at the Midwest Gaming Classic this weekend. The show runs from tomorrow (3/23) through Sunday (3/24) at the Sheraton Milwaukee Brookfield Hotel in Brookfield, WI. I’ll be there, so I can’t wait to check it out up close and personal.

You can check out more details on the build over on the Hyperspin forums.

Now all we need is working versions of Sugar Rush and Hero’s Duty to go alongside it.

NYT: ABC crafting live streaming app for tablets, phones

NYT: ABC crafting live streaming app for tablets, phones

According to unidentified sources speaking with The New York Times‘ media desk, ABC is currently working on a mobile application to bring its broadcast programming to mobiles and tablets. Unlike CBS’ offering, which offers a select choice of programs 24 hours after airing on broadcast TV via its mobile app, ABC’s is said to sync up with existing cable and satellite providers to provide live TV on-the-go — a first in the television industry. Beyond just offering cable and satellite customers a way to extend their viewing options, the app is said to potentially extend the reach of ABC’s ad network at a crucial moment when traditional broadcast network ad revenues are being threatened by other mediums taking a piece of the pie.

It seems that ABC’s parent, the Walt Disney Company, is looking to forge its own digital path when it comes to TV, rather than waiting for its multi-company partnership with Hulu to right itself. Disney and its several partners are said to be in talks to buy each other out; meanwhile, Hulu is left without captain at the helm.
