Hulu announces Andy Forssell as acting CEO

We’ve known for quite some time now that Hulu‘s CEO Jason Kilar will be leaving the company, a tidbit of information that first showed up in Variety back in August 2012. Since then, more information about the departure has been revealed, but one piece of the puzzle has been missing: who will replace him. That mystery ended today with a letter posted by Kilar on Hulu’s blog.

Mr. Kilar’s blog post originally went out as an email to the Hulu team, and in it he states that Andy Forssell will be taking his place as the acting CEO of Hulu at the end of this month when Kilar steps down. The current CEO then goes on to praise Forssell, who is currently a “critical” senior executive for the company.

Says Kilar: “You know Andy well; he’s been a critical senior executive and has been here from the start of this great adventure. Andy exemplifies the Hulu culture and has been central to Hulu’s journey, helping to grow this company from 2 content partners and no revenue to over 450 content partners and approximately $700 million revenue in 2012.”

He then goes on to state that Forssell has “strong support” from the Hulu board, having built relationships with many of its members. The decision is not final, however, and won’t be until News Corp. and Disney, the primary owners of the company, decide the direction they will take Hulu in, after which point they’ll decide if Forssell remains as the permanent chief executive.

SXSW Keynote Speaker Olivier Bau Talks About Creating Invisible Objects Using Electricity

Screen Shot 2013-03-12 at 7.41.33 AM

Electrostatic interfaces – systems that make your fingers “feel” textures on a smooth metal plate – have been around for a long time. They haven’t quite caught on because the sensation is a little creepy and it’s not quite foolproof. However, a researcher at Disney Research in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Olivier Bau, has created a unique system that creates these sensations on any surface using a special wearable system that actually controls the electricity sent to nerves in your skin.

His Revel project is an example of this technology in action. An object is treated with a special paint and then a “generator” attached to the body. As you move your finger along a surface, the system changes the way the surface feels to the touch and can recreate ridges, etched lines, and other sensations. It’s the first step in true universal interaction with objects.

Bau also discussed other projects in the works including one in Tokyo that allows you to create invisible physical objects by controlling the muscles in your hand. That’s right: you could pick up an invisible chess piece and your fingers would freeze at just the right spot so it would feel like you’re holding something sold.

Bau now lives in Los Angeles but is continuing work on the “invisible” for Disney’s research arm. I asked him if he had to wear mouse ears at work and he very demurely refused to answer.

Original Star Wars Actors Accidentally Confirmed For Episode 7 By Lucas

Original Star Wars Actors Accidentally Confirmed For Episode 7 By Lucas

We’ve heard Carrie Fisher is returning to play Princess Leia in Star War: Episode 7 with Harrison Ford possibly coming back as Han Solo as well, but it looks as though the man himself, George Lucas, may have confirmed the big three stars of Star Wars Episode IV – VI in a recent interview.

Lucas spoke to Bloomberg Businessweek and was asked if he informed Ford, Fisher and Mark Hamill of LucasFilm’s upcoming deal with Disney. “We had already signed Mark and Carrie and Harrison—or we were pretty much in final stages of negotiation,” said Lucas. “So I called them to say, ‘Look, this is what’s going on.’ ” (more…)

Carrie Fisher Returning As Princess Leia In Star Wars Episode 7

Carrie Fisher Returning As Princess Leia In Star Wars Episode 7

Last month we heard rumors of Harrison Ford possibly returning to reprise his role as Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7. The news came from a Latino Review reporter, although there were conflicting reports coming in at the same time. Today, on the other hand, isn’t speculation as Carrie Fisher has confirmed she’ll return as Princess Leia in Star Wars: Episode 7.

During an interview with Palm Beach Illustrated, Fisher was asked if she would be coming back as Princess Leia:

Question: Disney is going to continue the Star Wars saga, producing movies set to hit theaters starting in 2015. Can you confirm whether you’ll reprise the role of Princess Leia?

Fisher: Yes.

Reports of Fisher returning as Princess Leia first circulated this past November when she said she would return to the Star Wars franchise, but it was later confirmed her remarks were tongue-in-cheek and in no way confirmed her return.

If reports of Harrison Ford’s return turn out to be true, we’ll personally be calling Mark Hammill on an hourly basis to make sure he’s aware he’s the last piece of the puzzle missing from the old cast returning to a new Star Wars film.

News Corp. and Disney allegedly in talks over the future of Hulu

According to sources, News Corp. and Disney are in talks about one of the companies possibly buying out the other to take control of Hulu, with NBC remaining the minority in the matter. Both Disney and News Corp. own about a third of Hulu each, and both are said to differ on how they feel the company should be monetized. Says the sources, these talks are in the beginning stages.

Per the two individuals who provided the information and are said to have knowledge about what is going on, News Corp. is of the opinion that Hulu should be primarily monetized via subscriptions, which is a current option with Hulu Plus ($8 per month). Disney, on the other hand, thinks Hulu should instead be dependent on an ad-based business model.

As part of the talks, both Disney and News Corp. will look into making changes to Hulu’s business model, or into possibly selling the service. Although they are in talks, says the sources, no deal is guaranteed and nothing may come of the alleged talks. Neither corporation has had anything official to say on the matter.

Hulu has grown since its humble beginnings, having been formed by Fox and NBC, which is now the minority holder. The service has grown, with the company reporting late last year that revenue had climed to $695 million, and that the number of subscribers was up substantially to 3 million. These rumors follow the upcoming leave of Hulu’s CEO Jason Kilar, who is set to step down at the end of the month.

Hulu part-owners Disney, News Corp. reportedly discuss buying each other out

The new owner of Hulu could turn out to be… one of the existing owners. After an aborted sale attempt in 2011, new rumors suggest current part owners Disney and News Corp are talking over the possibility of one buying the other’s stake out. The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg both tag people with knowledge of the situation as their sources, indicating a disagreement over the video streaming website’s business model — it announced $695 million in revenue last year — as a reason for the talks.

Reportedly News Corp. prefers a subscription based model, while Disney sees an advertising-focused approach as best. Both of them own about a third of the site, while Comcast / NBC Universal owns most of the remaining third but can’t vote, and according to the rumors would remain as a minority investor if a buyout took place. Also playing into this is CEO Jason Kilar’s announcement he will leave the company by the end of Q1, so hopefully any decision on its future are made by the time a new leader is in place.

Sky cuts a deal with Disney for exclusive access, launches Sky Movies Disney

Sky cuts a deal with Disney for exclusive access, launches Sky Movies Disney

In Sky’s latest bid (after getting Sony and Warner on the hook) to corner premium viewing content in the UK before rivals including Lovefilm and Netflix get traction, it has announced an extension to its 24-year agreement with Disney. Beyond guaranteeing Disney — which means Lucasfilm, of course — Pixar and Marvel flicks will be on Sky (plus Sky Go, and 3D movies on Sky 3D) a year before any other service, it’s also creating a new Sky Movies Disney Channel in its lineup that launches March 28th. In order to reach those not with the typical TV package, the deal also brings Disney’s movies to Sky’s Now TV internet video service for users with a monthly movie pass. We’re sure 24 years ago, such deals didn’t cover so many devices or avenues of access but snagging exclusives to gain a market advantage has stayed exactly the same.

Harrison Ford Coming Back As Han Solo In New Star Wars Film?

Harrison Ford Coming Back As Han Solo In New Star Wars Film?

After Disney purchased the rights to the Star Wars universe from Lucasfilm late last year, news of a new Star Wars being planned started coming out, with Star Wars: Episode 7 expected to be directed by JJ Abrams. Star Wars fans are understandably skeptical of the new film, but the inclusion of one actor may have single-handedly saved the film.

According to Latino Review reporter Umberto Gonzalez, Harrison Ford will be returning to reprise his role of Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7 film. The deal Harrison Ford has agreed to is reportedly “significant.” (more…)

Mattel goes all in on AR for 2013

Mattel goes all in on AR for 2013

At last year’s Toy Fair, Mattel was all about Apptivity. The line of figures that interact with an iPad didn’t exactly revolutionize the industry. But, the company isn’t giving up on the concept. In 2013 it’s evolving and moving from action figures that you drag across a screen, to much more interactive augmented reality concepts. Rather than simply slapping a capacitive pad on the bottom of a toy, this next-gen version focuses first on delivering a solid analog experience, then enhances it by actually using the considerable computing power made available by the iPad. To give the new series the best chance possible at succeeding, three of the biggest brands in the Mattel stable will be first to make the jump: Barbie, Disney and Hot Wheels. So what does 2013 hold for the venerable toy maker? Head on after the break to find out.

Standalone Star Wars films planned by Disney

Like many Star Wars fans, I’m simultaneously excited and filled with dread at the thought of more Star Wars films coming now that Disney has acquired Lucasfilm. I’m excited that new movies are coming, but I’m worried the movies might not fit with expectations. An story is making the rounds that Disney is developing standalone Star Wars films based around individual characters.

yoda1

This is similar to what the X-Men franchise did with the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie. The tip on the standalone films comes from Disney CEO Bob Iger. He said that Disney was working on a “few stand-alone films.” He didn’t offer any specifics, but rumors suggest that the first standalone film would focus on Yoda.

Work on the standalone movie is said to be progressing alongside the new Star Wars trilogy. The first installment of that new trilogy will be directed by JJ Abrams, and is due out in 2015. The standalone films are reportedly expected between 2015 and 2021 and are being written by Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg.

The first Star Wars film we can expect from Disney will be written by Michael Ardnt, who wrote Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine. Iger noted that Disney plans to make Star Wars 7, 8, and 9 over a roughly 6-year. He said there would be a few other films released during that period. Star Wars fans may or may not know that Kasdan worked on the scripts for the original trilogy including The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
