Samsung creates first full-color quantum dot display, threatens to make Dippin' Dots obsoleteWe haven’t been serving up quantum dots news for quite as long as we’ve been regaling you with tales of quantum computers, which is just as good because we’re about to tell you the technology is still at least three years away from showing up in something you can buy. But, it is getting closer, with Samsung demonstrating a four-inch quantum dot display with full color. Quantum dots are nanocrystals that emit light when they get excited, perhaps on Christmas morning or when waiting for the list of school cancellations on a snowy morn. The size of the crystal dictates the wavelength of light emitted, and by laying precise grids of different sized crystals Samsung creates RGB pixels of the sort needed to make a display. Pixels can be applied directly to glass or to a flexible surface, and in theory they’ll be far more efficient than an LCD while brighter and longer-lasting than OLED. Right now, however, they don’t achieve any of those benchmarks, which is unfortunately where we circle back to the whole “three years away” thing.

Samsung’s Super AMOLED Plus displays dispense of maligned PenTile pixel configuration

As crisp and vibrant as AMOLED and Super AMOLED smartphone displays are, they roll off the assembly lines with a pretty big design compromise: most of the components in the marketplace right now make use of a little visual trickery called PenTile whereby green subpixels occur with greater frequency than red and blue. Meanwhile, traditional displays (CRT, LCD, plasma, you name it) typically use one red, one green, and one blue subpixel per pixel, and the end result is that AMOLEDs tend to be a little grainier by comparison at a given resolution. OLED-Info points out that Sammy’s new Super AMOLED Plus displays appear to have solved the PenTile problem, instead using something called Real-Stripe — effectively meaning honest-to-goodness RGB pixels, which explains the company’s claim back at CES of a 50 percent boost in subpixel count. Interestingly, Real-Stripe requires more space per pixel, which could be why the Galaxy S II and Infuse 4G are 4.3 and 4.5 inches, respectively, a pretty healthy hike from the 4-inch mark they’d settled on with last year’s original Galaxy S models. ‘Course, none of this puts us close to the 7 or 10 inches we’d need to make a tablet work — but we know they’re cranking on that already.

Sony announces 17-inch and 25-inch Trimaster EL professional OLED monitors

The last we heard of a reasonably sized Sony OLED display was way back in June, even though it was just the panel itself rather than a full package like the XEL-1 OLED TV. But yesterday, Sony unveiled a couple of new OLED monitors for its Trimaster EL professional range: on the left we have the BVM-E250 25-incher, accompanied by the BVM-E170 17-inch sibling on the right. The “Super Top Emission OLED” panels on both models boast an RGB 10-bit driver, 100 cd/m2 standard luminance, 1920 x 1080 resolution, plus an impressive 178-degree viewing angle both vertically and laterally. We’ll save the rest of the technical details for you video nuts in the press release (along with a video) after the break, but let us warn you that these don’t come cheap: the E250 will be available in mid-April for around ¥2.4 million ($28,910), and the E170 in June for around ¥1.3 million ($15,710).

Texas Instruments shows off minuscule nHD Pico projector chipset, USB-powered prototype

Can’t say we really expected to see Texas Instruments’ DLP group here at Mobile World Congress, but it’s hard to deny just how mobile these things are becoming. In fact, the company came to Barcelona to (re)unveil its thinnest, smallest optical engine to date: the nHD Pico. It’s small enough to fit into just about anything — phones, slates, tiny projectors and the rear of your cranium should you choose to embed it there. As for specs? It’s sporting a 640 x 360 resolution, a contrast ratio greater than 1,000:1, a true RGB LED wide color gamut and reliance on a low-power Pico DPP2601 / 2607 ASIC / processor. TI was using a newly launched Acer device (the C20, if we’re being precise) to showcase the chip, and on-site representatives noted that other outfits are developing new kit with this guy in mind. In related news, another gem was on display that hasn’t quite made it to market yet. The palm-sized nugget you see above is a full-on pico projector, designed to be powered entirely via USB. There’s no built-in battery in this one, and no one would confess as to which company (or companies) were gearing up to ship a branded version of it later this year. That said, it’s most certainly on the way, and you can bet we’ll be keeping an eye out for it. Peruse the gallery’s below at your leisure, of course.

Synaptics ClearPad 3250 capacitive touchscreen hands-on (video)

In the grand scheme of things, one millimeter may not seem like a lot, but in the smartphone arms race toward ever-slimmer devices, measurements like that matter. Synaptics, best known for building laptop touchpads, has ventured into the capacitive touchscreen realm with a new panel that promises to save exactly that much space: 1mm. But that’s only the start. You see, the thinner display profile is the result of Synaptics melding the touch-sensing layer and the display into one, using what it calls in-cell technology, with the result being something roughly comparable to Samsung’s Super AMOLED implementation. The benefit of going with Synaptics, however, is that the company’s tech is compatible with all display types, meaning that everything from garden variety LCDs to high-density IPS panels can be infused with a bit of touch sensitivity. Additional benefits include extra brightness, as there is one fewer layer for light to get through, and significantly higher sensitivity than on most current generation touch panels. You can see a pretty compelling demo of that on video just past the break. The ClearPad 3250 should find its way to shipping devices over the next nine months, with its current iteration capable of being fitted to screens up to five inches in size and a subsequent model scaling all the way out to eight inches.

Hitachi’s 4.5-inch IPS display has 1280 x 720 res, 1,100:1 contrast, plans for mass production in October

Yo, Apple, you know that Retina Display you’re so proud of? Old news. Hitachi Displays has just announced a 4.5-inch IPS LCD panel that fits 1280 x 720 pixels within its frame, accounting for an eye-watering 329dpi density. That’s higher than you can get on the iPhone 4, but the fun doesn’t stop there. Hitachi’s new goodness also promises an 1,100:1 contrast ratio and 500 nits of brightness coming from an LED backlight. This precious new slice of technology is predictably all geared to land in your future smartphone of choice and we’re told mass production is set to begin in October of this year. That basically means CES 2012 is going to be filthy with handsets offering full 720p resolution — we can’t wait.

WSJ: iPad 2 in production, features FaceTime camera, faster processor

Oh look, what’s this? The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the iPad 2 has entered production — which exactly lines up previously rumored manufacturing schedules. According to the WSJ, the new edition of Apple’s tablet will have a faster processor with a better GPU and more memory in a thinner, lighter package. There’s also said to be a front-facing camera for video conferencing, but the much-discussed display resolution will remain “similar” to the current iPad — which actually goes along with the most recent information we’ve gotten from our sources, who say that the next iPad will indeed stay at the current resolution, and that the higher-res display we’d heard about earlier may have actually been for a future model. As for availability, the WSJ says the new iPad will be on Verizon and AT&T, which certainly makes sense — although it’ll be interesting to see how Verizon handles positioning it against the upcoming Xoom, which Motorola is marketing in an aggressively anti-iPad manner. In any event, between the iPad 2, the Xoom, and whatever Palm has to offer tomorrow, this spring is about to get very, very interesting.

iPad 2 display leaked?

Do you believe what you’re seeing? 9to5Mac along with iFixYouri repair say they’ve got the new iPad 2 display. Better yet, they’ve got the purported part number: LP097X02-SLN1, compared to the original iPad’s LP097X02-SLA3 display. It’s said to be lighter and more than 1-mm thinner than the original while featuring a thinner bezel as well — right, just as the rumors and our own sources have said. Such a display would also enable some tapering of the edges in line with those milled aluminum dummies we’ve seen. The big mystery is still the resolution. A 9to5Mac commenter claims to have deciphered the part number to reveal its LG Phillips 9.7-inch XGA 1024 x 768 H-IPS display origins (same resolution as the current iPad, if true). Unfortunately, we have no way to confirm this. One more pic of the part number details after the break.

Clover SunBook offers ‘first sunlight ready netbook,’ questionable graphic design

When we first made contact with Clover System’s SunBook, it was but a glimmer in Pixel Qi’s transflective eye, but today, the little guy is ready to step out on its own. Like Notion Ink’s Adam, “the first sunlight-ready netbook” packs dual lighting displays, allowing you to shut off LCD backlights while under direct sunlight and cut your power consumption in half. You can also leave both functions on for easy indoor-outdoor transitions. It’s sporting a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 10.1-inch display, 1024 x 600 screen resolution, USB 3.0 as well as WiFi and Ethernet capabilities. So basically, it’s a perfectly acceptable netbook (on paper, at least) and it’s packing a promising display, but we have to admit Clover’s marketing for SunBook leaves something to be desired. In fact, if we hadn’t seen this thing at CES we’d advise you to proceed with caution. Being that it’s got the Pixel Qi seal of approval, however, we’ll leave the decision up to you. You can purchase the sunlight-ready netbook for $795 via Clover’s website, handily linked below in the source.

German researchers prototype 6mm thick pico projector

Pico projectors just keep shrinking, and a new prototype developed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Engineering is helping said shrinking along pretty strikingly. The team has developed a prototype pico which is just 6mm thick, making it the world’s slimmest ever. Better yet, the projected image is 10 times brighter than a pico projector of its size would have previously been — had it existed. The new lens on the projector is so small that it could potentially be integrated into smart phones without boosting size or weight. The new prototype is made of 45 red, green or blue microlenses, each with a 200 x 200 pixel LCD, inspired by a microlens array called a fly’s eye condenser. The resulting resolution is nearly, but not quite, WVGA with 11 lumens of brightness. The prototype will be shown off at Nano Tech 2011 in Tokyo.
