McDonald’s interactive Pong billboard brings big-screen elation, tomorrow’s lunch

You could enjoy that Big Mac in the peace and artery-clogging quiet of your local McDonald’s, or you could just catch the next flight to Stockholm, where Ronald apparently serves his meals with a side of interactive, outdoor gaming. It’s all part of something called Pick n’ Play — a new (and pretty ingenious) ad campaign that invites pedestrians to play a game of Pong on a giant Mickey D’s billboard, using only their smartphones. All you have to do is stand in front of the display, log on to Pick n’ Play’s site from your handheld, and wait for your phone to verify your location. From there, you’ll have to manipulate an onscreen paddle using your device’s touchscreen, while doing battle with a game that gets increasingly more difficult. Last thirty seconds, though, and you’ll get a free, lipid-drenched treat of your choice, courtesy of the Golden Arches. Best of all, you won’t even have to download an app to get your Pong on — putting you one step closer to that coronary you’ve always wanted. Trot past the break to see it for yourself.

MasterImage touts 4.3-, 7- and 10-inch glasses-free 3D displays, interest from ‘first tier’ device makers

MasterImage and its parallax barrier 3D technology have been around for a while. Though nothing major — excepting the Hitachi H001 in Japan — has ever come of this company’s efforts, it’s back at Computex this year with a trio of reference display, showing off glasses-free 3D at 4.3-inch, 7-inch and 10-inch form factors. Resolution on both the 7- and 4.3-inch panels is 800 x 480 at the moment, but there’s a 1280 x 800 7-incher in the works that could be ready for production by the end of this year. The parallax barrier allowing for the autostereoscopic effect to happen adds only 1mm to the screen’s thickness, though it does halve vertical resolution — meaning an 800 x 480 screen will only show a 400 x 480 image when flipped to 3D mode. MasterImage builds the LCDs and controllers in these 3D imagers and is currently in discussions with what we’re told are “first tier” manufacturers of both smartphones and tablets. You can see the 7-inch display on video after the break — we found it able to match the 3D effect produced by displays requiring glasses, which is a good thing in relative terms, but as you see above, the two frames can and do get split up if you’re not perfectly positioned to soak up the third dimension.

Qualcomm CEO confirms death of Mirasol e-reader display, looks forward to ‘next version’

Remember that Mirasol e-reader display Qualcomm was hoping to release this year? Yeah, it’s not happening. Speaking at a press briefing in San Diego yesterday, Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs confirmed that the 5.7-inch panel has been abandoned after failing to meet expectations. Instead, the company will devote its attention to the “next version” of the technology, which has Jacobs feeling optimistic:

“We have a really interesting roadmap — we’re starting out on e-readers because we figured having E Ink as a competing technology was a good way to get started. But if you think about the power consumption of the screens that are out now [on tablets], they’re very bright OLED screens that use up a lot of the power of the battery. We don’t today have as vibrant color as an OLED display – but we have a roadmap that gets us to a much brighter color.”

Presumably, this roadmap would include that low-power “converged e-reader” we heard about a few weeks ago, slated for release by the end of the year. Jacobs also mentioned that Qualcomm is planning to invest a billion dollars in its Taiwan Mirasol plant, which might help produce the kind of volume that, say, Amazon would demand for its Kindle displays. It’s all speculation, of course, but Qualcomm certainly seems to have some big plans in store for the rest of the year.

TDK starts mass production of transparent OLEDs, makes texting and walking safer

TDK is taking those transparent OLED screens we saw back in October and putting them into mass production. The 2.4-inch, QVGA (240 x 320) UEL476 display has a transmittance of 40 percent, but obscures light passing through the front so others won’t be able to read your text messages from behind. Obviously, these aren’t going to find their way into high-end Android handsets, but they may have a home in fashion phones like Lenovo’s S800. And, you know, they seem perfect for SMS addicts who can’t stop their thumbs from flying even while walking. Check out the full PR after the break.

ViewSonic equips 24-inch V3D245wm-LED monitor with built-in 3D emitter

The “ultimate 3D monitor?” Likely a stretch, but who are we to argue with a stalwart like ViewSonic? All jesting aside, those looking to finally bite on the 3D value proposition can get ready to do so, as the 24-inch V3D245wm-LED monitor packs a built-in 3D emitter, an HDMI 1.4 input, 1080p resolution, 120Hz scanning rate, two millisecond response time and a brain-melting 20,000,000:1 “maximum contrast ratio.” For those looking for something a bit more bantam, the PLED-W200 is also being (re)introduced here at Computex, claiming to be the planet’s first WXGA pico projector. ‘Course, we got an early peek of this very unit back at CES, but hopefully we’re one step closer to actually seeing this one ship. Sadly, the outfit’s not dishing out pricing or release dates, but hopefully both will be revealed shortly.

KDDI haptic smartphone prototype promises up to seven layers of touch, only shows off two

Ah, another possibly vaporous, yet intriguing addition to a long line of haptic patents and prototypes. Today’s offering: a KDDI smartphone mockup (utilizing Kyocera display technology) promising to render sensation through multiple layers of applied touchscreen pressure. Imagine depressing a camera shutter on a touchscreen, and you’ve got the idea. KDDI only had a screen sporting two haptic layers on hand when they demoed the prototype at Wireless Japan this week, but Kyocera reportedly told Akihabara News that the technology is capable of up to seven layers of tantalizing touch. Neat. Maybe we’ll get a few authentic haptic touchscreens on the market and do away with all the vibrational fakery we’ve been seeing.

NHK’s flexible OLED is both literally and figuratively green (video)

When it’s not pushing Super Hi-Vision, the hopeful 7,680 x 4,320 successor to HD, NHK also dabbles in small, flexible OLED panels. The Japanese public broadcaster recently showed off a 5-inch prototype display that, while bearing a heavy green tint and very noticeable rows of dead pixels, was still a significant improvement over a similar screen it demoed in 2009. Sure, it’s not quite as flexible or vibrant as Sony’s rollable OLED from last year, but it does seem to suffer from fewer bad pixels — an important step towards maturation. Don’t miss the video after the break which offers some pretty nifty glimpses at a number of bendable OLEDs. It’s clear the tech is still a little wet behind the ears, but we’re definitely getting closer to a future populated with TVs that roll up for storage and e-readers that fold like a paperback.

Sony’s new OLED display promises higher quality images, glitch-free brightness

It may not be as flexible as some of the other displays we saw at last week’s SID conference, but Sony seems confident that its new OLED panel will deliver high quality images with enhanced, glitch-free brightness. The 9.9-inch screen transmits images in 960 x 540 resolution, boasts a ninety-six percent color gamut, and is powered by a Self-Aligned Top-Gate TFT (in which the gate material is placed above the insulator) that reduces disparities in luminosity. To achieve this, Sony developed a new, four-part manufacturing process that lowers the parasitic capacitance between the gate electrode and the TFT. The top-gate structure, moreover, shortens the TFT’s channel length, making it easier to adapt the technology to larger, high-resolution displays. No word yet on when the prototype will hit the market, but when it does, it’d be nice if it’s priced as reasonably as some other OLEDs from Sony.

Sony shows off, folds up super flexible organic TFT display

E-reader manufacturers are doing their darnedest to get their devices to behave more like the old fashioned books we’ve all since abandoned, but we won’t be happy until we can roll one up and stuff it in our back pockets, paperback-style. Sony’s working hard to make that dream a reality — the company showed off some new bendable display technology behind closed doors at last week’s SID conference in LA, including a color unit and the extremely flexible black and white e-paper display seen above, which can be bent to a 5mm curvature radius. The 13.3-inch sheet has a 1,600 x 1,200 (150ppi) resolution and is powered by organic TFTs. Sony showed off and bent the thing at the show, reportedly to the cheers of the crowd in attendance. Clearly they’re all as excited as we are to make some really expensive e-paper airplanes. For more shots of the bending process, consult the source link below.
