PSA Oculus Rift development kits now shipping, some may have already arrived

Oculus Rift is in the mail! Development kits began shipping to customers on Wednesday, and even if you have yet to receive a tracking number of your own, a kit may very well be on its way. The Oculus team has been “tied up at GDC” this week, which explains the delay in sending out tracking info, but folks taking care of logistics have apparently been hard at work, prepping some 10,000 development kits for shipment. Of course, not every set will be on its way to a developer right away — it does take time to get that many kits out the door — but if you’re expecting one at your front porch, it’s likely to arrive very soon. In the meantime, the Developer Center has opened up to devs, with access to the SDK, Unity and Unreal Engine integrations, forums, wiki and other documentation. The team also published a video of its SXSW panel in full for your enjoyment — you can catch it just past the break.

Google selects Glass Explorers, will send invites to winners over the next few days

What would you do if you had Glass? Google asked you to share your plans last month, offering up 8,000 coveted reservations in the search giant’s “Explorers” program. Now, the company has finally selected the winners, and plans to send out order invitations “over the next few days.” Sadly, invite recipients will still need to hand over $1,500 (plus tax) for their very own set, and the program is currently limited to folks in the US, but this was still the best opportunity to get an early look at Glass, making it a very appealing program, despite the cost. Google received many creative applications, including a proposal from JetBlue, but only individual users will have an opportunity to make a purchase this time around — the company says that it’s “working on connecting with businesses in other ways.” Congratulations to the lucky winners — feel free to send us a tip when word finally hits your Google+ or Twitter inbox.

LG issued patent for the 2010-era tri-screen smartphone that never was

LG issued patent for the 2010era triscreen smartphone that never was

How do you boost screen real estate on a smartphone without increasing the device’s footprint significantly? You could add a pair of slide-out panels mounted behind the main display. But you wouldn’t. We’d hope. Such a concept made its way out of LG HQ and into the hands of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, however, and three years after its submission date, the proposed device has returned to haunt the South Korean manufacturer, in the form of an issued patent. The concept in question is quite simple: a primary LCD would be visible at all times, and when the occasion called for another panel or two, they’d simply slide into view, ready to serve as a number pad, or settings control, predictive text display, or even a full-fledged split keyboard.

Now, considering that there’s been plenty of time since this filing to bring such a smartphone to market, we’re going to guess that LG’s abandoned plans for its tri-screen device, opting instead to boost the primary display size in smartphones like its Optimus G Pro, or the poorly received 5-inch Optimus Vu. That’s not to say that multi-screen handsets won’t continue to make an appearance, however — NEC’s Medias W has already hit NTT DoCoMo in Japan, and it’s possible that BlackBerry may be considering a split device of its own. This LG concept, however, is probably destined for a dusty filing cabinet at the patent office, where it’s unlikely to surface again.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Rumored To Have Unbreakable Display

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Rumored To Have Unbreakable Display

Back in December last year there were rumors floating around that the Samsung Galaxy S4 will come with an “unbreakable display”. Well the S4 was announced a fortnight ago and it has been confirmed that Samsung’s latest flagship Android smartphone does *not* have such a display. Nevermind, now there’s a rumor that the upcoming Galaxy Note 3 may have an unbreakable display, and it will be one of the most important feature of the device. It’s quite a bold claim, but while in theory OLED displays can be made to be much more resistant than their LCD counterpart (they can even be flexible), there is still a need for a glass surface for the touch sensor. Solutions exists, and Samsung has demonstrated such a flexible display at CES. Will that become a product?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is also rumored to have an Exynos 5 Octa core processor coupled with 2GB of RAM, more on board storage, a bigger battery and a back camera of at least 8 megapixels. At this point in time it is not known what the design of Note 3 will actually be, though it is largely believed to be along the same lines of the Note II’s design. In the software department, it is expected to run Android 4.2 Jelly Bean at the very least. Previous rumors suggest that the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 may be released at IFA 2013 in Berlin, which takes place in September.
