Lest we forget NEC doesn’t just make Ultrabooks, the company recently announced its new E series of commercial-grade displays. They include a 32-inch E323, 42-inch E423, 46-inch E463, and a 55-inch E553, all of which are edge-lit LED models that are designed for educational, enterprise and retail use. All models offer full HD resolution, three HDMI inputs, built-in ATSC/NTSC/QAM analog / digital tuners, integrated speakers, and more. They’ll be available in November for $419, $649, $829, and $1,279 respectively, and those already tempted can learn more in the PR just after the break.

Layoffs and loans may be dominating our Sharp coverage at the moment, but that just makes this type of news all the sweeter. The company has announced its LCD panel type 5 — a 5-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080) display packing a Retina-busting 443 ppi (just trumping LG’s similar 440 ppi LCD). An outcome of its layer-reducing CG-Silicon technology, the smartphone-targeted screen goes into full-scale production this month and will be shown off at CEATEC Japan this very week. We’ll try to give it eyes-on treatment at the show, but you can rub your hands together sinisterly in the meantime and just think about the glorious devices which will bear it.

Auto show concept cars are all whizzy styling and impractical interiors, and Smart’s latest offering, the Forstars EV at the Paris Auto Show, has all that in spades. But the stubby car has another show-stopping feature we’d love to see in production — a projector installed right into the vehicle’s grill. That would let you and a special friend pull the two-seater up to any white wall and beam the flick of your choice from an iPhone’s bluetooth port, while blasting the audio through the sound system. Other friends not in the Forstars’ confines would also get the sound from speakers located in the ventilation grills behind the doors. Once rolling, the concept Smart moves along with an 80 horsepower electric motor and 17.6 kWh battery, boasting 127 lb/ft of torque and an 80MPH top speed. Since the car’s currently a one-off, don’t get any ideas about heading to Lookout Point with a screen in tow — but you can head to the video after the break to see how it works.

Way back at CES, FXI’s Cotton Candy was a sweet looking slice of Android and / or Linux mini-PC. Since then, the pendroid club has seen quite a few more join its number. However, if you were one of the faithful that got on-board with FXI’s particular take on the form-factor early, then that little box of ARM Cortex A9 joy is finally available to buy. We’ve received word that pre-orders are now finally ready to be fulfilled, with early buyers getting developer versions. This of course means that you might pay a small price for such eager adoption, with a list of limitations including mixed video playback and streaming support, as well as potential issues with power from USB hosts. That said, we suspect that if you’ve been able to wait this long, these are small prices to pay, along with the $199 asking price, naturally. Give the source a whirl to get your teeth into one now.

Many of those who buy iMacs and Apple-designed displays are eager to avoid clutter in the first place, which makes an organizer all the more logical for those who’d like Desk Zero almost as much as Inbox Zero. Accessory maker Twelve South’s newly available HiRise aims to clean it all up — and lift it up. The aluminum-and-steel frame elevates Apple’s modern all-in-ones and screens to any one of six points while conveniently leaving storage space that goes with the local computing decor, whether it’s to hold external hard drives or car keys. Although the HiRise is no trivial expense at $80, it’s better for propping up an iMac than an old college textbook, and arguably more useful as a whole.
