The system comes with a two-part bumper case for the computer board, as well as a custom wireless keyboard, with a built-in touchpad and color-coded buttons, making it kid-friendly. It connects to any monitor with an HDMI port, and comes with an 8GB SD card pre-loaded with the Kano OS and tools to help learn how to program. The open source computer can run pretty much any Debian Linux package, and will come with easy-to-use software for creating and playing simple games.

The KANO KIT DIY Computer is being crowdfunded via Kickstarter. You’ll have to pledge at least $119(USD) to get yours. With nearly a month of funding left, the project has amassed more than $560,000 against a goal of just $100,000. Needless to say, it will go into production.

Brain DIY MIDI Control Interface Kits won’t turn you into a Borg

brain-diy-midiIf there is one particular mutant power that you think you would like to possess, what would it be? I suppose having brute strength and nigh invulnerability would come in handy when you want to be on the frontlines of war against the enemy, but it would be useless in making you rich unless you turn and be a villain, robbing banks for a living. Well, reading minds would be a far more subtle way of achieving your way to the top of the game of life, as you can garner the deepest thoughts and secrets of others without them knowing. Unfortunately, the Brain DIY MIDI Control Interface Kits are nothing of that sort in terms of its nefarious ability, but it does offer a decent way to learn more about MIDI interfaces.

With the Brain DIY MIDI Control Interface Kits, you will be able to ensure that all of the sliders, knobs and pads will remain in exactly the right place where you require them to be. Once you are done building your very own enclosure, yo are more than ready to rock the universe. Depending on the kit you purchase, it would retail anywhere from $114.99 to $229.99. It is the ideal purchase for studio or performance devices, where each kit would arrive with all that you need to construct a MIDI controller.

Raspberry Pi hack creates a smart TV from a not-so-bright set

Raspberry Pi smart TV hack

Many of us only wish we could upgrade our less-than-smart TVs. Carnivore at DroidBuild, however, has taken matters into his own hands — he recently finished installing a Raspberry Pi-based media center into his own 40-inch Hisense screen. The hack replaces the TV’s built-in speaker with a Raspbmc system that has a 3D-printed faceplate for Ethernet and USB ports, an infrared adapter and external speaker output. While the modification is risky (and certainly voids the warranty), it’s much more elegant than hanging the Raspberry Pi off the back of the set. Check Carnivore’s photo guide at the source link if you’d like to know how he achieved the feat.

Circuit Stickers: Peel & Stick & Light

Here’s a fun kit that you can use to make simple electronics, even wearable ones. Circuit Stickers are just that – electronics with adhesive backing. The star of the kit are the LED stickers. Put them on a conductive surface – wire, foil, conductive thread or fabric etc. – connect a power source at one end and you have a light show.

If you want to add an element of interactivity to the LEDs, you can also get the Effects Stickers, the Sensor & Microcontroller Sticker or both. The Effects Sticker modifies the LEDs, making them blink, fade, twinkle or pulsate like a heartbeat. The Sensor & Microcontroller Sticker on the other hand adds a light sensor and a sound sensor to the mix. It also has a trigger that can turn on your Circuit Stickers for five seconds at a time.

Pledge at least $25 (USD) on Crowd Supply to get a Circuit Stickers Kit. Aside from the electronics themselves, each kit will also come with additional materials such as copper tape, coin cell batteries and binder clips so you can experiment out of the box. I think the Electric Paint Pen complements the kit well.
