FitBark monitors your dog’s ‘BarkScore,’ we go eyes-on (video)

Image

Granted, dogs tend to be a bit more vocal than, say, hydroponic plants, but sometimes it’s tough for busy owners to know precisely when their furry best friend is getting enough activity. FitBark, yet another Kickstarter candidate showing its goods on the floor of TechCrunch Disrupt’s Hardware Alley, is a bone-shaped wearable computer than hooks onto your dog’s collar. The device communicates with either a home base (shaped, naturally, like a doghouse) or your smartphone. The company’s got an iOS app (with Android on the way) that monitors your dog’s activity, awarding the pup a “BarkScore” out of 100. That’s an, um, “quantified woof,” according to the company.

FitBark still has 29 days left to hit its lofty $100,000 goal, and a pledge of $99 or more will get you in on the first batch of devices. Check out a video pitch of the device after the break.

Naki’o: A Four-Legged Friend Gets Four Prosthetic Paws

Dogs have long been touted as being man’s best friend. Aside from companionship, dogs can save human lives, depending on their training, by sniffing out bombs, transporting medicine (remember Balto?), and helping the blind ‘see.’ Given all the joy and help that dogs give humans, it’s only fitting that humans give back to them as well.

Take the case of Naki’o, an adorable dog that lost all four paws to frostbite when abandoned as a puppy.

He did fine as a pup, but began having difficulty supporting his weight as he grew bigger. So his loving owner, Christie Pace, searched for alternatives to help Naki’o out. She explained: “I have a soft spot for rescue animals in general. I was looking for something different, unique. I wanted to make more of a difference than a regular dog. I knew I could help him out.”

Pace set up a fundraiser to get prosthetics for Naki’o from OrthoPets. But when the animal hospital saw how well the pup did with his initial fittings, they set him up with a complete set of prosthetics, free of charge.

I guess you could say they have a heart of gold. Oh, and a little bit of trivia: Naki’o is the world’s first ever dog to be outfitted with custom prosthetics on all four legs!

K-9 USB Hub: The Laser Nose Knows

Doctor Who’s dog, K-9 might look kind of cute and cuddly as robot dogs go, but he can definitely hold his own. Now, you can have K-9 standing guard over your desktop – in USB hub form.

doctor who k 9 usb

While it doesn’t contain the fount of encyclopedic knowledge of his TV doggelgänger, this K-9 USB hub can connect up to four of your devices to a single port. Unfortunately, his nose doesn’t actually fire laser beams either, but I’m sure with a little laser pointer modding, you could easily pull that off. It’s also not clear if his ear-tennae spin around, but I sure want them to.

K-9 is available for pre-order over at Entertainment Earth for $40(USD), and should ship starting this June.

England to mandate dog microchips by 2016

UK to mandate dog microchips by 2016

Thinking about injecting an identification chip in your pooch? If you live in the southern part of the UK, you won’t have a choice. Come 2016, English and Welsh authorities will require all of the country’s pups to have embedded microchips, so they can be returned to their owners if ever they run astray. The United Kingdom’s Environment Department says some 60 percent of the country’s 8 million dogs already have the tags, but beginning in three years, owners who don’t spring for the device could be forced to pay fines of up to £500 (about $780). Cat microchipping will remain optional, since felines are less likely to wander outdoors. And “World’s Cutest Dog” fans need not worry about their precious Boo getting the forced implant — the famed Pomeranian (pictured above) is based in San Francisco, some 5,000 miles from the Queen’s needle.

The Ability to Eat a Starchy Diet Turned Wolves into Man’s Best Friend

If you’re a dog person, you may have wondered just how wild packs of wolves turned into your sweet and cuddly lap dogs. You can pet Fido behind the ears, scratch his belly, and throw sticks, but you better not try that with a wolf or it might eat your face off.

Scientists recently studied the genetic code of the domestic dog and compared it to its wolf cousins and found that the ability to eat a starchy diet is part of what led to the domesticated dog.

20130124 212511

According to the scientists, dogs split from wolves somewhere between 7,000 and 30,000 years ago (couldn’t they be a little more accurate than a 23,000 year window?)

The team of researchers compared sequenced genomes from 12 wolves from different areas the world to the sequenced genomes of 60 dogs from 14 different breeds. The comparison found that 36 genomic regions are believed to have been modified through domestication. More than half of those regions were related to brain function, including central nervous system development that scientists believe could account for the reduced aggression in dogs compared to wolves. Three genes play a role in the ability to digest starch.

The scientists believe that the split from wolves started when wolves began feeding on material humans dumped near their civilizations in ancient times, and certain wolves that were able to digest starchy foods survived to become the ancestors to modern dogs.

Garmin announces new dog collars, talks up Bark Odometer

Garmin’s not content with just a spot on your dashboard — the company’s also hoping to help you out with your pet problems. The GPS-maker’s got a couple of new additions to its line of dog collars, including the BarkLimiter series, which offers up an accelerometer-powered bark identification system and a Bark Odometer to help you keep track of your canine’s woof mileage. The collar is lightweight and waterproof and promises to increase “stimulation” as barking continues. The collar’ll run you $80 for standard and $100 for the deluxe edition. You can also get the BarkLimiter technology in the company’s Delta series of collars, which let you set a virtual leash up to three-quarters of a mile.
