Billy Butcher Video Game Pop Culture Art: Come Play My Game, I’ll Test Ya!

Thanks to it8bit, I’ve found one of my new favorite artists: Billy Butcher. His collection Come Play My Game, I’ll Test Ya! is an edgy and lively mashup of pop culture, headlined by my favorite pastime: videogames. Can you name the references in each illustration?

Guy Puts Donkey Kong in a Barrel: At Least It’s Not on Fire

It’s like beating Kong in a barrel… Wait, that’s not how the saying goes. But you can say it now. This custom-built Donkey Kong tabletop arcade machine has been put into a barrel. Why? So you can drink and game of course.

donkey kong
Joel Griffin Dodd wanted a fully functional game of Donkey Kong in an old barrel so that he could have beer and cocktails on top of it. How drunk can you get? You probably shouldn’t try to jump over it, though that’s better that than smashing it with a mallet, I suppose.

It looks like a fairly straightforward build. Just put together a mini arcade system and stick it inside a barrel. Then put some glass on top of course. Not that I thought of it or was able to build one myself. Nice work, Joel.

The Ultimate Arcade Game Cake

After years of thinking about it, I finally bit the bullet and ordered a custom MAME cabinet for my basement. It’s finally coming next week, so I can’t wait to try and beat these guy’s Donkey Kong high scores. Or not. But if I wasn’t getting my own arcade machine, I’d take this arcade cake instead. It’s definitely the next best thing.

arcade cake 1

This three-tier cake was made by Wedding Cakes by Nicole, and it features colorful images of classic arcade games on each of its sides. It’s got arcade-accurate versions of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Tetris, Frogger, and even Pong.

arcade cake 2

It’s even got arcade-style buttons and a coin slot. Though I bet if you tried to mash on those buttons, you’d get food coloring all over your fingertips. The only thing its missing is a couple of paddle controllers for Pong, but I’ll forgive Nicole that.

I wonder if that joystick is edible. I so want it to be a red jawbreaker.

Donkey Hoth T-shirt: How Cold Can You Get?

Now here is an arcade reboot that I can totally get behind. Donkey Kong gets the Hoth treatment as Han races to rescue Luke from the Wampa monster.

donkey hoth
Han has his Tauntaun and blaster and he won’t rest until Luke is free. He has to navigate his way through some Imperial Probe Droids and make his way up to the farmboy who is dazed and dreaming of Dagobah. No jumping barrels. Just shooting stuff. And if he makes it up high enough, he can grab a lightsaber. Though I’m wondering why Luke doesn’t use the force to pull it to him and slice off the Wampa’s arm.

This T-Shirt design by Baznet is pure awesomeness. It’s just about $25 (USD) from Redbubble. Check out more of Baznet’s science fiction inspired Donkey Kong levels over at MightyMega.

Donkey Kong Cake is Totally Bananas

While I love both Donkey Kong and cake, I’m much more capable of finishing a cake than finishing the classic arcade game. I always used to get stuck around level three, and that was on a good day. On the other hand, eight slices of cake is nothing for me. This cake is just perfect then, as it’s the first time I actually stand a chance of finishing a round of Donkey Kong.

donkey kong cake 1

It was made a few months back by Rosanna Pansino for her collection of geeky edibles she calls “Nerdy Nummies” – and it certainly meets or exceeds that criteria. DK is just having a great day as he sits in a pile of banana candies, surrounded by a wall of Kit Kats. While it’s supposed to look like a giant barrel, I like to imagine it as a Kit Kat hot tub, loaded with banana bubbles.

Kong is made from fondant, while the bananas are simply banana Nerds candies. Of course, the cake itself has bananas in it and chocolate frosting. Yum. You can check out a video of the cake being created below:

Donkey Kong Remade as Science Fiction & Fantasy Series

Whenever I get a chance, I like to dust off my arcade emulator and try to see if I can get any further at Donkey Kong than the first couple of levels. Even after all of these years, the game still kicks my ass every time. But if the game were loaded with aliens and villains from science fiction and fantasy, I’m betting it would be even harder to beat then going up against Kong and his stupid flaming barrels.

That’s exactly what deviantARTist BazNet set out to explore with his series of Donkey Kong levels inspired by classic science fiction and fantasy movies and TV series. I can’t decide which I like the best, but the Alien and Doctor Who ones are among my favorites. I would not want to try and jump over Facehuggers or Daleks. The Adventure Time version is pretty great too, though it needs more Beemo. There are also The Dark Knight Rise, Game of Thrones, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi levels. And while it doesn’t qualify as science fiction or fantasy, Cookie Kong is pretty swell too.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Releasing On May 24

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Releasing On May 24

Nintendo announced a new Donkey Kong Country Returns game would be making its way to its Nintendo 3DS this summer, but it looks like the development of the game went better than expected as the company is announcing Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be made available in North America on May 24.

The press release Nintendo released to announce Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D’s launch date did not include any further details as to what players can expect from the game. Instead, it simply gave the release date, and a photo of two gorillas, with one playing on a Nintendo 3DS. We’ve experienced our fair share of weird press releases, but this one might be the weirdest we’ve received. With a little over two months to go until Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is released, we’re sure Nintendo all reveal more about the game in the coming weeks. Until then, know that there will probably be bananas in the game. Lots and lots of bananas. (more…)

Dad Hacks Donkey Kong So Daughter Can Play as the Damsel and Save Mario

What would you do if you introduced your daughter to Donkey Kong and she was disappointed that she couldn’t be the female and save Mario? Would you just say, oh well, that’s the way it is? Well, Mike Mika wanted his daughter to have the game her way. So he hacked the game.

donkey kong pauline edition

His daughter wanted to play as a princess in Donkey Kong, like she did in Super Mario Bros. 2. So, like Kirk with the Kobayashi Maru, Mike changed the program and put together a patch that let his daughter play as Pauline, the damsel who is no longer in distress. In fact, she has a mallet, and she knows how to use it.

Check out the video. Mike is one great dad.

Dad Hacks Donkey Kong So His Daughter Can Play As A Female Character

It’s usually when we get older that we start to appreciate what our parents have done for us, although hopefully in this case, this 3-year old girl will realize it sooner than most. The problem was this: Mike Mika’s 3-year old daughter was confused as to why she could not play as a female character in Donkey Kong when she could in Super Mario Bros. 2. When Mika explained that this was how the game was setup, his daughter appeared to be a bit bummed out by that piece of news, so like any dad who does not wish to disappoint their kid, Mika decided to hack Donkey Kong and ultimately made the princess the main character and the rescuer in the game. Pretty heartwarming stuff, and if you want to see what this new Donkey Kong game looks like, check it out in the video above.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Coming To Nintendo 3DS This Summer [Update]

Nintendo Wii owners were treated to a new version of Donkey Kong Country back in 2010 called Donkey Kong Country returns, which did an excellent job of bringing everything gamers loved about the original Donkey Kong Country into a current generation of console. Fans of the game who own a Nintendo 3DS will be happy to know that game is planned to be released on their favorite handheld gaming system.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D won’t be just a port of the Nintendo Wii game, instead, it’ll be a completely new adventure which Nintendo is saying is being “rebuilt from the ground up.” We’re sure that means there are going to be a number of 3D elements and dual-screen action to play through. Judging by the images published by Nintendo this morning, it looks as though we can expect to play as Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong once again.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D for the NIntendo 3DS is expected to be released this summer, which a 3D trailer to be released later today on the 3DS eShop.
