Bethesda: Avoid Doom 3 BFG Edition on your Xbox 360 like the plague

Bethesda already has issues for quite some time already with the non-appearance of Skyrim: Dawnguard DLC on the PS3, and this time around, the developer has warned Xbox 360 owners to not install Doom 3 BFG Edition on their respective console’s hard drive. The reason behind this seemingly backward request? Word has it that Bethesda is aware of a strange bug for the Xbox 360 version of Doom 3 BFG Edition which affects folks who installed the game on the Xbox 360’s hard drive, which results in the system being unable to access the bonus Doom or Doom 2 titles.

Bethesda Global Community Lead Matt Grandstaff said, “If you choose to install the game to the Xbox 360 hard drive, you will not be able to launch Doom or Doom 2. As their [sic] is no performance advantage to installing the game to your hard drive, we recommend not installing the game to avoid this issue.”

No idea on whether Doom 3 BFG Edition will be updated in due time with a squashed bug, but it is rather disturbing to know that such an old game that is nearly two decades old still runs into issues when ported onto a modern day platform.

Doom 3: BFG Edition arrives on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360

Ah, there is nothing quite like the Doom franchise to bring back those memories when I was a wee lad, and my 486DX crashed in the “Icon of Sin” level because there were just too many monsters being spawned that all 4MB (yes, can you believe that?) RAM and 640k base memory were used up. Well, those who have a penchant for all things Doom, you might be interested to hear that Doom 3: BFG Edition is now available Stateside on the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms, while our friends living across the pond can get theirs on Friday.

Doom 3: BFG Edition will carry the original versions Doom and Doom 2 in addition to the re-mastered versions of Doom 3, not to mention a Resurrection of Evil add-on pack. Heck, there will even be eight unreleased Doom 3 in The Lost Mission. Definitely a walk down memory lane, and you might want to play with all the lights turned off just for old times’ sake. Say “Hi” to the Cyberdemon for me!

Oculus Rift's latest prototype gets a showing at Gamescom 2012 handson

“This is the latest prototype,” the Oculus guys tell us. That’s great, now strap us in. The team decided to make a sudden stop in Germany ahead of appearances back in the US over the next few weeks — and we’re glad, because it meant we got to call in on them and grab some time with the Oculus Rift. If you didn’t know, the Rift is a Kickstarter-funded VR gaming headset (stay with us) that’s caught the attention of several games developers — most notably John Carmack. He liked it so much, in fact, that he developed a special Rift-ready version of Doom 3 for the headset and Doom 4 will also be heading to the VR peripheral too. We got to play with the earlier game and while there’s a video after the break, we reckon you’ll really need to try this in person to fully grasp how the Oculus Rift plays. Check out our impressions after the break.

Doom 3 gets ported onto Android, still in its pre-alpha stages

While id Software might have put their mobile game developments on hold while they focus on the upcoming Doom 4, it seems that one developer has taken it upon himself to port Doom 3 over onto Android. At the moment the port is in its pre-alpha stages and based on what we’ve seen in the video there’s not much to see in the game yet. One thing we did notice was how long it took for the game to load, but then again this port is running on the HTC Desire HD, an older Android device. Perhaps it might do better with newer phones with quad-core processors or with Snapdragon S4 processors, but we guess we will need to wait and find out.

The game itself is very “empty” in the sense that there appears to be no enemies yet and according to its developer, he has managed to achieve 26-30fps. Some gamers might be really fussy and consider those numbers to be really low, but we have to admit that it is pretty impressive as to what he has managed to achieve so far. No word on when the port will be released, but just don’t expect it anytime soon. In the meantime check out the demonstration in the video above (you might want to skip to the 1:56 mark which is when the game finally loads).
