Drinks are generally one boring, homogenous color. Usually it doesn’t matter because you’re in a dark bar and we’re drinking for the flavor (or more likely, to forget). But sometimes it’s fun to shake things up. Add a little color, add a new dimension to your drink. And wouldn’t you know it, the key ingredient is science.

Making new friends over cold brew isn’t particularly difficult, but making those friendships Facebook-official requires a bit more effort — unless you have Buddy Cup, that is. Developed by ad outfit Agencia Africa and creative studio Bolha for Budweiser Brazil, the drinking vessel makes folks who toast with each other friends on Zuckerberg and Co.’s social network as soon as their beverages collide, with an LED lighting up to confirm the new acquaintance. Partygoers link their Facebook profile with the LilyPad-based grail by scanning a QR code underneath the glass with an app from the brewer, and they’ll be on their way to making new pals. The Drum reports that the Buddy Cup will be used at concerts, festivals and parties sponsored by The King of Beers, but we’re sure intrepid imbibers can hack some together for use at their own soirees. Most people aren’t really good judges of even their own sobriety, and that’s where the BACtrack Breathalyzer comes in.
BACtrack is a compact breathalyzer that you can take with you on the go. It can accurately measure how much alcohol you have in your system, thanks to its internal air pump that can provide you with precise and consistent results. It then sends its data to your iOS device over Bluetooth. Being true to the ‘track’ part of the breathalyzer’s name, the BACtrack will track your blood alcohol content (BAC) over time so you can gauge and maybe even re-asses your current drinking habits.
The companion iOS BACtrack app also serves as your personal drink diary, and even lets you snap photos of what drinks you’ve been imbibing. It doesn’t skimp on social features either, as you can share your results with other people, like your designated driver.
The app also has a feature which will estimate how long it will take for your blood alcohol level to return to 0.00 so you know approximately when it will be safe to drive, bike, walk (or text).
