Poutine-Flavored Soda is for People With Iron Stomachs

Have you ever heard of poutine? No? Well, it’s a Canadian dish that’s made with french fries which have been topped with brown gravy and cheese curds. Other variations exist, but that’s basically what the dish is.

Doesn’t sound very appetizing, does it? It probably has a certain appeal, though, since has been around since the late 1950s. Now take that dish and imagine it as a drink… then take a sip of Seattle-based Jones Soda’s Poutine Soda and see if it matches your imagination or expectations.

Poutine Drink

Jones Soda describes the drink as having “a nice balance of rich, savory gravy over a starchy potato base, and accented with those fatty, cheesy notes you expect in a plate of poutine.”

I haven’t tried it myself, but others have, and I’ll leave you to gauge how good or bad it was based on their reactions:

Bartendro cocktail mixing robot lands on Kickstarter, wields Raspberry Pi (video)

If you prefer robot bartenders to lack limbs that could be used against you in the impending robopocalypse, Bartendro might be your kind of bot. After two years of building and tweaking, the folks at Party Robotics have finally polished their Raspberry Pi-powered cocktail-making rig and have posted it to Kickstarter. Born from a need to re-create mixed drinks in perfect proportion, Bartendro uses food-grade tubing, pumps and custom-built electronics to pipe liquids out with a measurement accuracy of a milliliter. According to the projects’ site, however, it can’t quite handle carbonated beverages in its current state. By using a device connected to the contraption’s own WiFi network, thirsty folks will be able to select drinks from a web-based interface. Mixologists, on the other hand, can leverage the control panel to customize cocktail recipes, manage dispensers and even read reports of what drinks were made and how much of which ingredients were used.

Both the hardware and the software that make up Bartendro are open source, and the team behind it even wants to create an online drink compendium that’s free as in freedom and beer. The hope is that intrepid enthusiasts can hack together mods ranging from breathalyzers to a stirring or shaking mechanism. Early supporters can snatch a ShotBot with one dispenser for $249, a Bartendro with three for $375, a model toting seven for $1,199 and a fourth version carrying a whopping 15 for $2,499. However, crafty DIYers can roll their own system by pledging coin for individual dispensers and the Linux boxes that power them. The group has currently raised over $20,000, but it’s aiming for $135,000 to push the bot into production. TARDIS Liquor Cabinet: Jigger on the Inside

There’s actually a bar in Brooklyn that has its very own TARDIS, but if you want one in your house instead, I think I like this idea even better. Unofficially dubbed the “Party TARDIS” by Redditor imonfirex727, it’s a work of geeky wonder.

tardis liquor cabinet

This TARDIS liquor cabinet is loaded with booze – presumably acquired by the Doctor during various trips through time and space. Somewhere along the way, he even picked up a smaller TARDIS and an even tinier Dalek, and stores them in the cabinet for safe-keeping. I’ve heard that the Davros 30-year single malt is quite a treat.

The Inebriator Robot Bartender Silently Mixes Drinks, Asks for No Tips

The Inebriator will be everyone’s favorite party robot. It mixes cocktails while you wait, and because it’s a ‘bot it will do so with precision and without complaint. How’s that for a drinking buddy.

the inebriator

An Arduino Mega 2560 microprocessor controls the stepper motor that drives the drink shelf, the control interface that contains a small LCD as well as a few buttons, the valves that control the flow of booze and the robot’s many LEDs.

Head to The Inebriator’s website for more details, although one crucial piece of information that’s not there yet is whether this will be a commercial product or not.
