Motorola DROID Bionic Begins Receiving Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Update

Earlier this month, Motorola DROID Bionic owners were reporting they started to receive invitations to test the device’s upcoming Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, and here we are a few weeks later as Motorola is announcing the device has just started to receive that very update.

Starting today, the Motorola DROID Bionic’s Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will begin rolling out to handsets for Verizon Wireless customers. As you would expect from Android devices receiving 4.1 Jelly Bean, DROID Bionic owners can expect a number of improvements to their devices that include Google Now as well as improvements to the device’s notifications. Some updates will also be made available specifically to improve the DROID Bionic as users can expect their device to have better data connectivity as well as the removal of its preloaded Sling and MOG applications. Droid Bionic gets Ice Cream Sandwich update

Motorola‘s Droid Bionic is (finally) slated to receive an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, which will be available on October 19th. This comes when many other cell phones are offering users upgrades from ICS to Jelly Bean. The majority of the Android-using world is still using Gingerbread, however, so Bionic users who upgrade will still be a bit ahead of the general curve.

By upgrading to Ice Cream Sandwich, Bionic users will get a variety of new features, including the customizable launch bar, Face Unlock, simplified multitasking, improved notifications, and Motorola’s SmartAction app. ICS users will have Direct Access Lock, which lets the users skip directly to either the camera, messages, texts, or unlock. In addition, users will be able to create folders by drag and dropping apps on top of each other.

The Droid Bionic features a 4.3 inch qHD TFT display with a resolution of 960×540, as well as a Gorilla Glass overlay to help protect the screen. The Bionic has both a microUSB and micro HDMI port, as well as a standard 3.5mm headphone port. Its wireless tech includes LTE, EVDO Rev.A, b/g/n Wifi, and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.

Some of this smartphone’s best features includes its 8MP camera with autofocus and an LED flash, which can record in full HD 1080p, as well as its dual-core 1GHz processor. The Bionic was released in 2011. According to the Verizon Facebook page, it will receive a Jelly Bean update “in the coming months.”

Droid Bionic finally gets an ICS update as everyone else moves on to Jelly Bean

Droid Bionic finally gets an ICS update as everyone else moves on to Jelly Bean

After nearly a year of suffering with Gingerbread, Droid Bionic owners who haven’t given up on their phone will finally be rewarded with that long-awaited ICS update; the rollout starts October 19th, according to Verizon. Those who get it will receive a new customizable launch bar, a direct access lock screen, enhanced notifications, Motorola’s SmartActions app, Face Unlock, easier multitasking, and many other goodies most Android owners have enjoyed for awhile now. It looks like Motorola Mobility actually made good on some of its promises to fix the handset that has suffered a number of different problems since its launch (which itself took almost nine months from the initial announce date). However, now that Jelly Bean has taken over as the firmware of choice with no word yet if that’ll come to the Droid Bionic, we wonder if it’s too little, too late.

Update: We’ve learned from the comments, Motorola’s owner support forum and its own Facebook page that the company is planning on rolling out Jelly Bean to the Droid Bionic “in the coming months” so don’t lose hope just yet, Bionic faithful.

Motorola Droid Bionic soak test indicates impending Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update

If you happen to own a Motorola Droid Bionic, then chances are pretty good, assuming you have yet to root your device and installed one of those custom ROMs on it, that you do not have Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich under the hood. All of that does seem as though it is going to change soon, considering how the Motorola Droid Bionic soak test is about to kick off. This snippet of information comes from owners of the Motorola Droid Bionic, where they claimed to have received an email from Motorola which enquired whether one wants to participate in a soak test – and one can only assume it would be for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, what else could it be?

A soak test is basically an event where a small number of handsets of a select model will be able to test out a new software update, which signals only one thing, which is the soon-to-be-released software. Better, for the lack of better words, to screw up on a small scale than on a large scale, right?

Motorola feels Droid Bionic owners’ pain, promises to fix things

Motorola feels Droid Bionic owners' pain, promises to fix things

With a star-crossed history that includes a lengthy delay, mysterious sounds and other issues, Motorola’s Droid Bionic has had a bit of a checkered past. Motorola, however, is apparently aware of Droid Bionic owners’ woes and is working on a plan to make things right. At least that’s what Punit Soni, VP of Product at Motorola Mobility, is promising owners of the device on his Google+ page. Faced with complaints ranging from the Bionic’s locked bootloader to its delayed ICS update, a contrite Soni admitted that Droid Bionic owners got a “raw deal” and promised their feedback “will not fall on deaf ears.” He then said that the company has a plan for the device and that he is “currently solidifying things to ensure we can publish it, commit and follow up.” Soni did not provide specifics on what those plans are though you have to admit that the guy’s candor about the Bionic’s issues is refreshing. In the meantime, the phone’s ICS upgrade is now slated to roll out in Q4. Bionic owners who want to add their proverbial two cents to the conversation can hit up the source link below.
