Android 4.1 Jelly Bean reportedly rolling out for the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD

Last week Verizon confirmed that they would be rolling out Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for the Motorola Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD, and the good news is that according to several reports from users, it looks like the update has begun to roll out in earnest en masse. Apparently the update had begun to roll out to several users earlier this week, although it seemed to be on a small scale, perhaps as a test run to make sure that nothing major stood out before Verizon and Motorola began to push out the update to the masses. As expected, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will introduce a variety of changes and new features to your mobile devices, such as the replacement of the Motorola Blur on-screen navigational buttons to the stock Android versions, Project Butter which should result in a smooth experience, and Google Now. According to those who have received the update, it’s about 276MB in size, which while pretty substantial shouldn’t take too long to download over WiFi or LTE. If you have received the update, let us know in the comments below on how it is treating you!

Verizon Droid RAZR HD & Droid RAZR MAXX HD Getting Jelly Bean Next Week

Good news to all Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD owners on Verizon’s network. Verizon has spilled the beans today saying that the aforementioned device will be getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean next week. Verizon has updated its support site for the Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD, highlighting the details of the update.

As you know, Jelly Bean will bring nifty enhancements to your device including the fabulous Google Now feature as well as an enhanced notification panel and smart keyboard, not to mention, of course, the after effects of Project Butter. The Jelly Bean rollout should commence next week. Anyone happy?

“Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD by Motorola are the next smartphones to be upgraded to Android 4.1, Jelly Bean. The software upgrade will be pushed out to customers in phases starting next week,” Verizon said. Don’t forget to check out our review.

Special edition Droid RAZR MAXX HD for Verizon employees leaked

Remember a while back we reported that Verizon employees would soon be able to get their hands on special edition models of the Droid RAZR MAXX HD, Windows Phone 8X or the DROID DNA? Well if you were hoping that some enterprising Verizon employee would put his or her model up on eBay, thanks to a leak we may know how what to expect. Pictured above appears to be the Droid RAZR MAXX HD but with a different back designed meant exclusively for Verizon employees. It features a pretty hypnotic looking design and the power button has been colored red as well, pretty nifty! Each model will be marked with the “LIMITED EDITION” text and will feature a number to indicate its limited availability, but apart from the facelift, don’t expect the internals of either handset to differ from the original. In any case we expect that these special edition handsets will appeal to collectors or to those who have the need to stand out from the crowd, so keep an eye out on eBay or Craigslist if you think that this is a handset you wouldn’t mind owning.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean leaked for Motorola Droid RAZR HD and Droid RAZR MAXX HD

If you have picked up either the Motorola Droid RAZR HD or its larger battery sibling, the Droid RAZR MAXXX HD, you might be interested to learn that both of these devices will be updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The official update is scheduled to be released by the end of the year, but in the meantime it looks like a leaked Jelly Bean for either device has been leaked. This firmware leak has been labeled as 9.1.39Xt926.verizon.en.us and it is thanks to DirtyDroidX from DroidRzr. This leak should work on both the RAZR HD and the RAZR MAXX HD as both devices are pretty much the same, save for the latter with its larger battery capacity.

We’re not sure if this is the final build that will be officially released by Verizon and Motorola, but for now it looks like it’s an official build, but as to whether it is the final build remains to be seen. In any case if you’d rather not wait for Verizon/Motorola to start pushing out the official update, you can go ahead and download the leaked build and flash it onto your device yourself (instructions can be found in the source link below). If you’re unfamiliar with flashing then perhaps you might want to give this a pass, especially since bad things could happen to your phone if you were to mess up along the way.

Motorola lists phones that won't get Jelly Bean, offers $100 credit to buy a phone that will

Back in September, Motorola Mobility announced that some of its handsets from 2011 and later wouldn’t be making the jump to Jelly Bean. In an effort to smooth things over with exiled customers, the company pledged that it would offer a $100 rebate to those who trade up to a select Motorola smartphone. Today, the Google-owned Android maker has released a list detailing which phones qualify for this promotion. If you’re among the many who purchased a Droid 3, Droid X2 and Photon 4G, it looks like an official update to Android 4.1 is out of the question. It should be noted that this offer doesn’t affect your wireless contract’s terms and conditions (read: ETF may still apply). However, if you’re just aching to pick up a Motorola phone that released in 2012, then why not score a $100 credit for your troubles? Move past the break to see which other devices made didn’t make the cut.

Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD review

Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD review

When Motorola resurrected the RAZR brand last year we didn’t realize that we were looking at the new face of the company. At the time, Google had yet to officially take over the handset manufacturer, it had a deep stable of less-than-impressive devices and, while it was a moderate success, the Droid RAZR didn’t exactly turn the market on its head. Still, in retrospect, it only makes sense that the RAZR would once again become the standard bearer for Moto. Even if we weren’t blown away by last year’s model, it was a big step in the right direction for the company, a device that featured a great mix of premium styling and performance. The new RAZR HD and MAXX HD take that basic formula and attempt to address our concerns about the display and battery life, the latter of which was already handled in dramatic fashion by the RAZR MAXX. So, how do the latest caps-happy, vowel-averse handsets from Motorola stack up against last year’s incarnations and the current crop of competitors? Keep on reading after the break to find out.

Engadget's smartphone buyer's guide fall 2012 edition

First and foremost, you’ll now find alternate selections to supplement our top picks. This should already be familiar to many of you, which is the same format we use for our seasonal gift guides. The next one is a biggie: we’ve dropped the QWERTY selection. By and large, manufacturers and carriers alike have shifted their focus away from keyboard-equipped smartphones, and you’ll rarely find more than one option on any given carrier. That said, if you still insist on the tactile experience, you’ll always find everything you need to know in our reviews. Finally, whenever possible, you’ll now find prices from Amazon Wireless, which allows us to provide you with more compelling budget selections and highlight the substantial savings that you can score by circumventing the carriers. We have three new smartphones from Motorola here — the Droid RAZR HD, the Droid RAZR Maxx HD and the Droid RAZR M — and we wouldn’t be very good hosts if we didn’t properly introduce them. So, here they are. Meet the RAZRs.

Motorola launching first devices with Chrome for Android pre-installed

Motorola launching first devices with Chrome preinstalled

While company executives on both side of the divide have spoken of “firewalls” between Google and Motorola, there’s clearly some perks to being a wholly owned subsidiary. The handset maker has announced that it’ll be the first to ship smartphones with Mountain View’s Chrome for Android pre-installed. We’re expecting to see it front and center on the Droid RAZR M next week and the RAZR HD and RAZR Maxx HD later this year.

Motorola announces Droid RAZR Maxx HD

Motorola announces Droid RAZR Maxx HD

Well, we weren’t expecting it at today’s Motorola event, but Motorola just outed a Maxx version of the Droid RAZR HD. Like its svelter sibling, the HD Maxx has a 4.7-inch Super AMOLED HD screen, 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, LTE, and an 8-megapixel shooter, but it upgrades the onboard storage to 32GB. And the main event with any RAZR Maxx is, of course, an upgraded 3,300mAh battery that promises up to 21 hours of talk time, 13 hours of video playback or eight hours of web browsing on LTE. Naturally, a price has to be paid for such longevous life, but at 67.9mm wide, 131.9 mm long and a mere 9.3mm thin — less than 1mm thicker than the standard HD — it’s a relatively small one. Naturally, we don’t know how much this beast will cost, but Motorola’s telling us it’ll be available for this holiday season. Folks looking to dig into the details even further can find them in the PR after the break and at the source below.
