R2-D2 Hip Flask: Don’t Drink and Droid

R2-D2 is one versatile maintenance droid. He can hack security systems, distract stormtroopers, project holographic messages from princesses in need, and even navigate swamps. But did you know he also serves booze?

r2 d2 flask

This R2-D2 hip flask is perfect for concealing your Coruscant coolers, Bantha-blood fizz or Kashyyyk ale inside your coat pocket. And yes, those are all actual (imaginary) drinks from the Star Wars universe. But if you don’t have ready access to any of those exotic artisinal ingredients, it’s also great for stashing your Jack Daniels or Mad Dog too.

The flask sells for $16.99(USD) over at Your Flask’s Etsy shop. I don’t know why, but I always figured C-3PO for more of a boozehound than R2.

PSA: HTC Droid DNA now available from Verizon

What are we thankful for on the day before Thanksgiving? How about the glut of great smartphones? Phones like HTC’s Droid DNA, on sale today over at Verizon. $200 (with the obligatory two-year contract) will get you a gorgeous five-inch 1080p display, a quad-core processor, NFC and some Android Jelly Bean action. The battery life leaves a bit to be desired, however, though it’ll get you through the amount of time required to cook a 20 pound turkey, at least.

R2-D2 Made out of Cans: Anyone Got an Opener?

Everyone loves R2-D2, right? There’s really no reason not to – even if he is made out of cans. That’s right, R2-D2 has been built out a bunch of cans of what look to be sweet corn, Star-Kist tuna and tins of sardines on his chest. Mmm… just what droids like to eat.

This giant R2-D2 can sculpture was part of this year’s San Francisco Canstruction exhibit, which took place at One Market in San Francisco. C-3PO was nowhere to be found, but it’s possible that R2 ran off without him as he’s been known to do.

In addition to everyone’s favorite little droid, the exhibit included a giant shark made out of cans, tributes to Inception and UP and and what appears to be a red Death Star.

HTC Droid DNA review

Guanine, adenine, thymine, cytosine… Android? The Droid DNA — the latest addition to Verizon’s Droid series — may not contain any actual nucleotides (that we know of), but that doesn’t make this HTC-made superphone any less of a powerhouse. On the contrary, we’ve been eyeballing this handset with eager anticipation ever since it first launched in Japan as the J Butterfly; much like its counterpart from the Land of the Rising Sun, the DNA boasts a jaw-dropping 5-inch, 1080p display. But while that may be the headliner-worthy feature, you certainly can’t go wrong with a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor and 2GB of RAM taking charge behind the scenes, along with an ImageSense camera and other top-notch specs.

In certain respects, the Droid DNA is a sneak preview of what’s to come in 2013: a wave of high-performance “superphones” that take advantage of this improved resolution, and offer a long list of other top-notch features. Indeed, that’s a future we could all definitely live with, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves; we’ve got a phone to review, after all. Is the display as tantalizing as it sounds? Will its size be a selling point or a major distraction? Should you waltz into a Verizon store on Black Friday and demand they take your hard-earned $200? Follow us after the break as we focus on the here and now.

Droid DNA Hands-On!

So Verizon’s new top-end phone is out, and one thing’s for sure–this guy is a brick. It’s large enough to give the Galaxy Note II a run for its money as king of the phablet hill. What’s nice is that HTC has continued to use the soft-touch back we first saw on the 8X, which certainly gives the phone a premium feel. Also nice is the red speaker grilles on both portrait sides of the phone: HTC’s design director said they were inspired by Lamborghini, and they do look like intake grills. But it’s also nice to see on a phone. The phone is big–5 inches–but it doesn’t feel as huge as say, the Galaxy Note II. As mentioned in the announcement post, there’s some pretty impressive guts inside, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro. HTC is also using the physical buttons we first saw on the HTC One X. The screen’s what you came here for, and we’ll have photos of the 1080p monster as soon as we get the handset up and running. In the meantime, take a look at these photos:

We’ll be publishing our review of the Droid DNA soon, so keep your eyes peeled.

HTC Droid DNA Hands On: This Thing Is Sick

The HTC One X, the EVO 4G LTE, and the One X+ are among our favorite phones. But the company hasn’t had a flagship device for Verizon in a long time. Now, with the Droid DNA, HTC decided to go all out and make the most impressively spec-filled smartphone the world has yet known. More »

HTC Droid DNA Officially Announced!

HTC has officially announced the long-rumored Droid DNA, the newest superphone to hit Verizon for the holiday season. The phablet-size Galaxy Note competitor was known as the HTC DLX (pronounced “deluxe”) and it will boast a 5″ 1080p display that we spotted at CEATEC a a little while back. The display is not only the only 1080p display on a smartphone, but at 441ppi, it has a higher pixel density than any other TV, tablet or smartphone on the market.  In addition to the jaw-dropping screen, the phone is also packing a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, a 2500mAh battery, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with a healthy slice of HTC Sense on top. And it’ll have LTE connectivity, which used to be a high-end handset given before the Nexus 4. The camera is also supposed to be strong, with a 8 megapixel sensor, which is slightly disappointing compared to the rumors of a 13-megapixel sensor. Plus, the Droid DNA is also the first major Android phone to come with wireless charging standard.

HTC is billing the Droid DNA as a phone, not a “phablet,” but at a 5″ screen, we’ll have to see how it feels in the hand before passing judgement.

You can pre-order a Droid DNA now. The phone itself launches on Verizon for $199 with contract on November 20.

We’re about to get some hands-on time, so stay tuned.

We’ve got the Droid DNA in our grubby little hands. Take a look at our hands-on here.

HTC And Verizon Reveal The Jelly Bean-Powered Droid DNA: 5-Inch 1080p Display, 1.5GHz Snapdragon Chipset, Wireless Charging

It’s anything but a secret at this point (really, the number of leaks is astounding even for HTC), but Verizon and HTC have just officially unveiled the Droid DNA here at their joint press conference in New York City.

“It’s about bringing Droid back to its original roots,” he said. “Ultimate power.” Bold words, sure, but I wonder how Motorola Mobility (Verizon Wireless’s other major Droid hardware partner) feels about that little jab.

The DNA certainly has a lot going for it, but its biggest claim to fame is that it sports the same crazy Gorilla Glass-clad 5-inch 1080p Super LCD3 display as seen in its Japan-only cousin the Butterfly J . In case you were wondering, that breaks down to a pixel density of just over 440PPI, easily surpassing the iPhone’s Retina Display in terms of pure pixel count. Despite the Droid DNA’s considerable screen size, HTC was quick to note that the device is definitely not intended to be a phablet — it’s all smartphone.

But a tremendous screen by itself does not a great device make. Under the hood, the Droid DNA sports a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset and 2GB of RAM (again, like its Japanese cousin). The last device I played with that had that particular configuration offered up some very strong Quadrant scores (think in the 7,000s), so the DNA seems poised to be a real powerhouse. To top it all off, the device will ship with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, albeit a version loaded up with HTC’s pared-down Sense 4+ custom interface.

Also on deck is the DNA’s ability to wirelessly charge, though details on related accessories were scarce.

If the DNA has managed to pique your interest, you won’t have to wait very long to get one in your hands — it’s slated to launch on November 21 (though pre-orders begin today), and will set curious consumers back $199 with a two-year contract.
