An Earth-shaking piece of news hit the drone community on Thursday night. A National Transportation Safety Board judge dismissed a fine that the Federal Aviation Administration had levied against the pilot of a commercial drone. The FAA has no legal authority over small aircraft, the judge said.
As of right now it’s perfectly legal to operate a drone for commercial reasons. That’s according to a federal judge, in a ruling that notes the Federal Aviation Administration has not made any legally binding rules against the practice. This flies in the face of the FAA, which previously stated that drones used for commercial reasons were illegal. The ruling follows a lawsuit in which… Read More
If you have been following the news, or if you have friends who have recently visited China, or if you live in China yourself, you’re probably more than aware of the pollution plaguing China’s cities at the moment.
Pollution on any level is bad, but looking at some of the photos that have been posted, it looks as though China has been blanketed by a cloud, a very dangerous cloud of pollution. Well the good news is that the government has found a way to deal with it and it is through the use of drones. (more…)
China To Deploy Drones To Deal With Pollution original content from Ubergizmo.
With smog in Beijing so bad it’s forced pilots to land blind and officials to shut down the airport, China has unveiled a new plan to test drones that spray smog-clearing chemicals around airports. How will it work?
Back in 2013, Google revealed one of their projects which was dubbed Project Loon. It wasn’t short for “loony”, but short for balloon which is what Google deployed in far-flung areas where internet access might not be so readily available.
Basically what these balloons do is provide internet access to hard to reach places through a small antenna which then communicates with a smaller antenna on the ground. It is a good idea and it seems that Facebook might be looking to give Google a run for their money with a similar project of their own. (more…)

If you think every possible use for drones has been thoroughly exhausted, you’re wrong. This clever photographer figured out that the hovering crafts would be perfect for lighting his mysterious scenes from the sky.
It’s no secret that military drones predate the 21st century. But it’s still amazing to see illustrations of unmanned aerial vehicles that are nearly a century old. Like this drone command center from 1924, with pilots sitting 500 miles away from the battlefield. It’s an image that’s strikingly similar to the drone pilots of today.
The thing about mad scientists is that they’re both mad and good at science. It seems obvious, but the outcomes are always unexpected. Case and point: this team of Hungarian physicists who created a bunch of autonomous drones that flock like birds. The invasion begins now.
